30s, she/her. I am bi and I will defend pansexuals with my battleaxe. 😤 Watch out for hyperfixations both new and old to crop up!

self discipline is so hard like. i know the sucker who's in charge...a pushover who hates authority and loves hedonism

I think that people whose idea of action is through total annihilation of a civilian enemy population/complete societal purge and expulsion should not be listened to, ever.

More things that get left out of Dracula adaptations

  • Van Helsing pulls 29 year old Dr Seward's ear like he's still a schoolboy
  • There's a relationship-establishment flashback between Van Helsing and Seward
  • In it, Van Helsing accidentally gets cut with something unclean. His then-student Seward immediately drops everything to start sucking on the wound raw
  • At one point, Seward asks to become his "pet student again."
  • Dracula has a big, permanent scar on his forehead from Jonathan Harker's shovel
  • Arthur Holmwood saying "Tally ho!"
  • Transylvanians conclude that the delirious, amnesiac Jonathan Harker is English due to "his violent demeanour."
  • Despite attempts to keep low profile, Dracula gets into the news twice in two months (in one of them as a missing dog)
  • Dracula getting misreported as a dog because English people have never seen a wolf
  • London newspapers treat Lucy's vampire attacks on children as a meme among kids because they don't believe in vampires
  • Dracula gets sworn at by a British sailor solely because he thinks Dracula is French
  • Van Helsing baffled why British sailors keep talking about blood and bloom (it's swearing)
  • Van Helsing is friends with real-life turkologist traveler Arminius Vámbéry, who is his source on the Dracula family
  • Van Helsing is friends with Hans Christian Andersen and references The Ugly Duckling
  • Van Helsing getting one-upped by MinaHarker every single time he says something sexist about her intelligence
  • Dracula failing to destroy the evidence against him because Mina backs up her files
  • Jonathan getting so mad he hunts Dracula down the walls like a spiderman with a machete
  • Mina and Jonathan kissing on the mouth in front of everybody
  • Quincey Morris spontaneously gifting Mina the Victorian equivalent of a MacBook Air
  • Quincey Harker

I LIED !!!! GET PRANKED

so long as we're back to social justice 101 on this stupid website, u need to be aware of the feedback loop that emerges from disproportionate scrutiny: any social group that is placed under extra scrutiny, regardless of the actual prevalence of any particular behaviour, will appear to engage in that behaviour more often.

you see this most blatantly with racialised groups (more cops in black neighbourhoods = more arrests in black neighbourhoods = "omg look at all the crime in these neighbourhoods!" = more cops in black neighbourhoods etc). even if the rate of crime is the same (putting to one side the criminalisation of poverty which is also an important related factor), one group gets away with it way more often and a new generation of racists is indoctrinated with the crime statistics which "prove" that some groups are simply more criminal in nature. we see a similar phenomenon online with particular groups (trans women being a huge example) being subjected to mass stalking, their every move documented by weirdos and broadcast as representative of the group as a whole.

tl;dr - overscrutinising groups based on existing bigotries creates a recurring feedback loop, reproducing those bigotries across generations and nominally justifying them. this is bad, and you need to remember that you are not immune to it.

Yeah, the Nazi Party quite famously did this with Jewish people. They would publish every crime committed by any Jewish person in the country while other German citizens received the usual coverage, which made it seem to the casual news consumer that Jewish people were unusually prone to crime. News outlets here in the U.S. also did this with immigrants so that despite the lower crime rate among that group compared to domestically born citizens, it manufactured the urgency we now see of getting the criminal immigrants out by any means necessary. Don’t get fooled by literal Nazi propaganda tactics.

April Fools day here is always funny because my dash is full of “here’s a Rick roll but it’s actually a different song” “here’s ‘do you love the color of the sky’ just kidding! It’s not the full long post!” “Here’s a drawing I made of a kitty! Just kidding! It’s two kitties and they’re best friends” and we do this unironically and completely ignoring the blood lust we all experience every year just two weeks prior

there's a really funny 3d printing controversy going on btw.

if you don't know, there's a very popular 3d printing model out there called "benchy". this is used for benchmarking your 3d printer because it's a difficult print and will help test it out.

this is so widely used that people make their own little versions of it, remixing the 3d model to make benchy look cooler and stuff. however, a new company owns the benchy license. they are sending copyright takedowns to all those who wrongfully uploaded the benchy model.

of course, this is pissing off the 3d printing community greatly. everyone loved benchy and have used it for years. so someone on reddit decided to make a new model that is designed as a 3d printing stress test. one that works a lot like benchy, and people are freely able to edit it as they please. you know what they called it?

boaty.

so as you might have guessed because I said I was camping in the woods to avoid getting sick (lol):

someone in my household has covid unfortunately but we did manage to get them a Paxlovid subscription. they’re uninsured, and even GoodRx coupons only brought the cost down to $1,300 USD.

I thought to check the drug manufacturer website and quickly signed up online through its portal and received a pharmacy card by email that lowered the cost to $0

There are also options for insured patients to dramatically lower their copays. I’m in the U.S., and I’m unsure whether this is applicable elsewhere, but I wanted to share this info on access to potentially lifesaving medication, for anyone it may help!
