Mythal dress sketch I’m feeling too lazy to finish rn 🙃
the UPS guy who witnessed my chicken-catching story all those years ago (which I posted about on the old blog) is still driving for UPS and now that I'm back in my hometown, every time I pass him we wave wildly at each other. I think of him so fondly. He apparently still tells people about me.
A few months ago he delivered a package to my sister that she had to sign for and our family resemblance is so strong he looked at her and said, "are you the Chicken Wrangler's sister?"
She called me and said, "your Bard just stopped by."
for context, long story short is that about a decade ago, on my way into work at the hardware store, me and some random farmers engaged in a chicken-chase through a residential neighborhood that culminated in me kicking off my shoes and climbing a brick wall onto the roof of a CVS Pharmacy. the chicken slipped my grasp and flew to a tree. I climbed off the roof and into the tree, shook the chicken off the branch, and it fell right into one of the farmers' arms. the local UPS driver witnessed the entire thing and when I got to work, he was inside the hardware store already telling everyone about what I'd done. he called me the Chicken Wrangler like an official title. this is what he still calls me, according to other people. I don't think he knows my name.

although I have more intimate scenes planned, I was in the mood for some small everyday-life moments, and I’m absolutely sure they would do this kind of touching of hands while passing each other in the Lighthouse✨🤍✨
(+yesterday’s daily sketch because I forgot to post it here TT.TT)

Eugenics
I just felt these tags were too important not to add @blacksasuke
The particular segment of medical racism that says ‘Black people are built tougher’ is a great example of why ‘positive’ stereotypes don’t exist.
Adding your tags, prev, cause.. yeah.
so Musk broke our government so hard that Trump's stupid tariffs can't even be collected, lol only the best people.

Hii! First, congrats on finally freeing your blog from flagged jail 😘
Second, can you give me advice on drawing expressions? Devlin and your characters are so expressive, and while I've got the hand of the anatomy, their faces just look dead on the inside in my drawings.
Love Devlin and her shenanigans, take care 💕
Hello and thank you!! It’s a relief to be free from the tumblr doghouse LOL And I appreciate you keeping up with Devlin's antics!! 🖤
How I draw an expression depends a lot on the story. My rendering style often shifts to suit the narrative moment! For example, with humor, I simplify characters' expressions and exaggerate features to help the punchline land! But if I’m drawing a sexy scene, I want to amp up the visual appeal. I'll focus on more natural proportions and I'll fully render details like the iris of the eye, eyelashes, shines on lips, etc.
Generally though here are a few things I do:
- I first sketch the expression at a small scale during the "thumbnailing" stage of a comic. Working small while sketching forces me to figure out the essential lines of the expression. Here's an example of my early sketches next to the final panel:
- I'll often make the eyes bigger on the face. I also tend to show more sclera/whites of the eyes. Eyes occupy a relatively small portion of the face and if they were always true to scale they'd appear as little smudges. But I want them to be legible since they hold a lot of emotional weight for storytelling purposes. Making them more visible can help an expression "read" better.
- I try to include a range of expressions. I love drawing hot characters as much as the next artist but it's often the messy, less than flattering expressions that connect us to their humanity.
- I avoid photo references in the early sketch phases because it brings out bad habits in me! I get too married to the source image. And while photorealism is cool, I find that a simplified, cartoony expression can actually help folks better step into the emotional world of the character.
Finally, I'm inspired by so many artists! I used to read a lot of manga in my youth which I think was pretty formative. I also learned a lot about expressions by studying the work of comic artists Fiona Staples and Mirka Andolfo.
Hopefully there's some useful bits in this! My ask inbox is always open to more specific questions. And keep in mind that my approach is just one of many so I hope you can find the right fit for your goals as an artist, anon! Cheers!!
