At work I’m a Fixer type person. If someone has a problem I’ll work through the solutions with them. This has often caused me difficulty when the person instead wants to be Very Upset. Trying to fix problems for Very Upset people just makes them More Upset. Sometimes they started at More Upset.

I’ve received a lot of coaching on stopping my Fix-It impulse to project empathy instead. It is definitely a learned skill.

So I’m working with a lady yesterday who had her center diamond fall out of her ring. We will replace it; So it should be no problem. But she was Very Upset because it was important to her, so I stood in front of her and made my eyes into very sad eyes, and I nodded, and I kept waiting until I could fix the problem.

She cried. I was very uncomfortable. But I nodded; I made sympathetic sounds and confirmed that it was a Very Sad situation. I gave her the ship of Theseus metaphor that even if a part of the ring is replaced it is still her ring and the symbol of their love carries on.

When I finally got to go into the back room to get her a diamond several of my coworkers were like “WOW! OH MY GOD! You’re doing it!” They were laughing and praising me while I dramatically collapsed in exhaustion. They told me how sincerely sad I looked and how great I was doing.

It felt good. My coworkers know me. They know the effort I put into something that does not come naturally and even though it was funny they still made sure to appreciate my growth.

There are whole several hour lectures one could take in color science and theory, but to keep it short: the set of colors we can see, the set of colors monitors can display, and the set of colors computers can model are three circles that only somewhat overlap.

Which is.. acceptable, but not as "bright" and "vibrant" as the green I had. Looking at the graphs in the OKLCH color picker, we can figure out why:

It tells us that a red with the same luminosity and chroma as this green is out of gamut—that is, it cannot be displayed by this monitor.

In this case, you can use the edges of the graph to find the color that is closest to what you want. You can, for example, keep the chroma but sacrifice lightness,

keep the lightness but drop the chroma,

or a bit of both, which is what the common HSV triangles already do.

You have one life in your body, do what makes you happy. Ditch the stuff you don't like.

My sinister queer agenda is I think that everyone should be the gender they like in the way they like it.
