Hello!
I’m a bit new to tumblr, so I’m probably gonna use this blog to ramble/rant/criticize about literally nothing (stuff like Miraculous, School Bus Graveyard, fandom spaces, that comes to mind!)
expect a lot of word vomit on here 😅
Je la chasse, c'est bien clair?
How it started: Joan Rivers
How it's going: Anna Wintour
This is such a dumb gripe to have honestly but every time I see a writing choice that is so clearly just a lore inconsistency being taken at face value by the fandom, using it for nonsense analysis which most of the time results in character salt.
I don't mind salt at all, but my god if I see one more post about the whole thing from Werepapas… "Oh Marinette is so evil and doesn't care about Adrien-" No. Shut up. This isn't about Marinette as a character, this is just the writers pulling new amok "lore" out of their asses that was never established before.
Like... do none of these people realize this??? Is this a case of people having zero... no, fucking negative media literacy or are they deluding themselves to oblivion into thinking the writers knew what they were doing there?
(I'm sorry for the rant. You can ignore this ask if you want, I'm just sick and tired of reading the same stupid takes over and over again and I wanted to vent)
I don't think it's a dumb gripe at all! That kind of thing gets on my nerves, too. As I said in another post on the topic, I get why someone would find Werepapas upsetting. There's a visceral negative reaction that comes from seeing Marinette break Adrien's amok, but the problem isn't Marinette's actions. Not really. There are actual multiple writing issues at work here:
That last one is the big one for me. I touched on it here, but for me, this episode was just a mini version of the season five final. In terms of the episode's plot, your question should not be, "why did the writers have Marinette break the rings?" It should be, "why did the writers have Marinette be the focus of another episode about Adrien family dynamics?"
Marinette should have never been put into the position where she had to make a call about the rings because it's not her fight. Time and time again this show has let minor characters be the ones to win when a fight involves their loved ones, but when it's Adrien's loved ones? He gets left out even though the fight is literally centered around a character feeling like they have no control:
Chrysalis: Hello. Forgive my intrusion. (Puts her hand on Milly's shoulder.) You've had enough of people fighting and making decisions for others, haven't you? I know what would be fitting for you – to finally be in charge. I can give you this power. Only if you agree, of course. (Milly looks up and smiles.)
That's terrible writing. I'm not looking for another Adrien akuma, but it's really weird that his newly introduced Grandma is the one getting akumatized over this issue and not him given the fact that he's the one who we've actually seen suffer long term. If anyone has a right to snap over this particular issue, it's Adrien. Similarly, if anyone has a right to save the day here, it's Adrien.
The last two seasons were packed with examples of people other than Ladybug getting to save their family, romantic partners, and friends. Why does Adrien never get those moments? Why was an episode about his custody focused on Ladybug fighting his grandparents? That should be what upsets you, not the dumb ring thing which was obviously not going to kill him. It was there for cheap drama, nothing more, nothing less. That's why the episode didn't give it the attention it deserves.
That and the fact that it would be too strong of a serialized element for this show as you'd have to know all about the rings to get what's going on, but that's just why the akuma should have been something other than the rings. I'm not sure why the writers tried to make the rings matter at all in this episode because it really doesn't work. There's not enough time to give them proper weight for viewers "in the know" so it's just an endless parade of Marinette being way too casual about this super important thing because the episode can't let her react properly without openly acknowledging Adrien's status and other serialized elements.
I read through the script and it seems like Ladybug's brief hesitation over breaking the rings is the only moment where the episode even tries to acknowledge what the rings are. Outside of that, they're treated like normal rings because Marinette doesn't react to any of the ring-based shenanigans that go on like Adrien giving the rings to his insanely controlling grandfather:
Emil: Hand me the Grahams' twin ring. (Adrien, without protesting, takes the rings off and sets them down on the table. As Emil reaches for them, his wife interrupts him.)
Or the rings being lost. Two moments that should have been accompanied by horror and Marinette considering that maybe Adrien should know what exactly those rings are. But there's not time for that so we get a total mess instead, making me very glad I'm not watching this season. Based on the way Lila was handled in previous seasons, I knew the writers were not going to be able to handle another lie-based subplot without people looking terrible and, oh look, I was right! It's just that Marinette is the main victim this time instead of Alya.
Minor side note now that I've read the script: Emilie, why did you make your family's deeply treasured heirlooms your son's remote control? That seems incredibly short sighted. You had to know your family might want them back, right? At the very least, you might want to pass on the rings to Adrien or his kids and then where are you? If you're going to give your kid a remote control, go with a custom one!
And if this was about breaking free of your family's control by claiming something of theirs for yourself (which I bet would be what the writers claim) then talk about being oblivious! You turned a symbol of control into a literal control! There's potential for something interesting there, but only if Emilie gets to be something less than perfect and canon doesn't seem to be going there. Fanfic writers go nuts with that one if it sparks an idea.
Sometimes I feel like for characterization the right way to go is to keep things from the audience. Like for Papyrus. There's a lot of stuff we don't see about Paps, and I feel like that's integral to his character (and Sans's) and if you remove that absence it ends up not feeling right. Does that make sense? Even if you extrapolate and you're correct about him, to make it feel like it does in undertale you have to keep the audience wondering.
Is Papyrus naive and ignorant or is he very aware? Whether you think one is right or wrong, in undertale the charm is that you can never tell. To make it feel like Papyrus you can't show evidence of either.
I feel like in trying to figure out Papyrus's inner psychology and apply it we forget that it's actually something that's meant to be hidden from the viewers.
i will never forgive popular UT fanon for using chara as a scapegoat in the genocide run and making "sans recognizes them and attacks them on sight regardless of what run they're in" headcanons so pervasive.
mostly because "restless spirit of a long dead child who's obsessed with the concept of cosmic retribution and facing consequences for your actions" + "guy whose job is just that but he treats it on par with his hot dog sidegig" is potentially one of the most hysterical dynamics you could come up with
I felt inspired by the tags.
An arrogant rich princess who plays to the crowd but is unhappy inside: *appears*
Fandom: eww this bitch is so mean and useless
Me: hii queen let me simp on you cause I like it when you go from charming, false, but so well thought-out game to your vulnerabilities, your weak and pathetic sides, your wounded bitch pride and the truly kind soul inside 😋
Here’s a poll featuring some of the ML characters I think have the potential for the most interesting trans readings. No Adrien button because he’d sweep, and no other button because I want y’all to live with me in rare(er) trans hc world for a minute.
Things I want to hear about in comments and tags:
Love you guys! T4T will save us all.
Honestly, overall, I think most of the criticism towards Marinette for her lies and secrets surrounding Gabriel's identity and Sentidrien have at least been relatively on-target. I think some of them have been overly pessimistic towards her, but it hasn't been insane, and it's at least been about things she actually did.
Like, try comparing it to the reaction with Chameleon salt, especially towards Alya. (Yes I'm still bitter about that. I might have stopped being bitter IF IT WASN'T STILL A SUPER POPULAR FREAKING GENRE UNTO ITSELF).
Most of the saltfic scenarios and criticism towards Alya for her actions in Chameleon have been based on "what-ifs" such as "what if she fell for Lila's lies so thoroughly that she believed any nasty thing Lila claimed about Marinette, and then responded by being verbally abusive towards Marinette and even outright violent towards her, outright bullying her even." Making this gigantic leap from "She can't clock Lila's lies" to "she will be more horrible towards Marinette as a consequence of those nasty things she says than we've seen her be towards her worst enemies." And then also writing or fantasizing about her being punished by like, losing her ability to get a job in the future, being disowned by all her friends, having grown celebrities say nasty things about her, etc.
Most of the Marinette salt I've seen has been more limited in scope, with most of it being about actual things she did in the show, though sometimes ascribing nastier, more malicious intentions than the narrative does, like having her treat Chat Noir like a tool or being interested in her own comfort at other's expense. But it's still using actual examples of things that happened in the show for it.
Like... the closest equivalent of the Alya bashing fic tsunami that resulted from Chameleon would be, when applied to the stuff Marinette's being salted for currently (well, some of it. The Alya bashing fic stuff is SO out of proportion I don't know that it's possible to do this in a totally proportional way) would be for Marinette to take the fact that she was given Adrien's Amoks and that he doesn't know about them, for her to mind-control him into being her boyfriend, using them to force him to have sex with her and drain all of his bank accounts for her, and then having his friends realizing what she's doing to him, beat her up, ruin her for life, and for Adrien to leave and find a better girlfriend.
Like with Alya bashing fics, it's following off of a "what if?", in this case, "what if Marinette kept the rings and was a way more awful person than she's ever been shown to be in the show." Similarly, Alya bashing fics tend to use the "what if" of "what if Lila told far worse lies about Marinette than we've seen, and Alya was a way worse person than she's ever demonstrated to be?" And yeah, in the Marinette scenario here, we actually see her giving Adrien back his Amoks. But given that he doesn't know what they are, she could feasibly ask for them back without him knowing how important it is that he keeps them. Also Alya has demonstrated that she won't believe particularly nasty lies that Lila tells about Marinette, even with evidence (we see that in Ladybug), but that hasn't stopped the saltfic industry from flourishing in the half a DECADE since that episode aired.
The fact that I'm not continuously seeing 15% or so of Miraculous fics making Marinette out to be mind-controlling abusive rapist in order to have Adrien and his friends take revenge on her shows how much more sane and reasonable the current wave of Marinette salt is from the STILL ONGOING Chameleon saltdom tsunami.
...I'm still just very bitter about this. I still see people asking for these kinds of fics like they're just normal things, and even with filtering them out and muting people, I still run into fics regularly that do this sort of crap to Alya (and a lot of the other ML characters to be fair, but Alya gets it the worst.) And it just makes me laugh whenever I see people complaining about how unfairly hostile the ML fandom is being towards Marinette because it's STILL, even now, six years after Chameleon aired, less than the shit towards Alya, and I feel like I'm yelling into the void to an extent here because it's been normalized to the extent that it's just priced into the Miraculous fandom it sometimes feels like. When it's so far outside the bound of any realm of normality or sanity relative to the shit thrown at most of the other characters, that it becomes comical when you actually try to put them into proportion with each other.
I still just can't stop feeling this festering bitterness about the unfairness of it all.
Literally saw a comment that says “I don’t need to know the context to know Alya is in the wrong.” (This is in regards to Alya finding out about Marinette’s secret with Gabriel.)
LITERALLY WHAT?? I have never seen this sentiment with Marinette or anyone else (except for maybe Lila)
100% agreed here. I'm very willing to critique the show, I am apparently a 'known salter' I swim in those circles. Heck I joined a tumblr community called 'Marinette Critique studio' out of curiosity.
After the initial shock/betrayal(betrayed by the narrative not Marinette betraying anyone) of the S5 finalé the responses have been very ... Mild.
I won't say someone never goes too far or too hard, but broadly people are upset:
A)At what Marinette is(ongoing) doing
And they want her to
B)Stop.
That's it. That's the huuuuuggge 'salt' response.
They want her to stop lying to Adrien, her partner, her *boyfriend*, an abuse victim, about his abuser.
This doesn't feel like it should be a hard sell.
I'll say I've had discussions to orient people away from Marinette specifically to the broader idea of the narrative arc just being a toxic drama trope that we should want over with as soon as possible. Usually it works.
What I run into more often than not is when I say: 'Marinette needs to stop lying to Adrien, it creates a toxic relationship imbalance and gaslights him as to his lived experience with his father.'
Marinette sugars hear: 'Marinette is a vile creature who should be burned at the stake.'
And they respond with "she's just a girl trying her best, you are just a salter, etc etc etc. Adrien can't know, Cat Blanc, etc.'
Like- okay, all of that can be true, *and* 'Marinette still needs to stop lying to Adrien, it creates a toxic relationship dynamic and gaslights him as to his lived experience with his father.'
The Alya hate is mind blowing too. I am lucky I don't travel in circles where she is despised. I can't imagine how they would handle Revelator. I wish these people would try swapping Marinette with any other character and see if their feelings remain the same.
What if Adrien lied to Marinette about her own family? What if Chloé erased Marinette's memory to keep a secret?
The 'my baby right or wrong' mindset needs to die. It hurts other characters (Alya is the big victim) and the fandom as a whole.
Smth I’ve thought about ever since I first saw wreck it ralph is that in universe king candy is basically an irl creepypasta. Like he’s a racer that only exists in this one specific sugar rush cabinet, every other version off the game has princess vanellope. Literally no one knows he exists except for ppl who went to this one small arcade in the United States. And if the code for sugar rush has been dumped there is no trace of king candy bc he only exists in this one cabinet. I bet there’s ppl who traveled cross country just to see if king candy actually exists.
And then after the movie king candy disappears from the roster forever and is replaced by vanellope but she’s different than every other vanellope, different outfit different personality different kart different voice lines etc
It’s literally that one arcade cabinet creepypasta discussions and YouTube videos about it in universe must be crazy.
I bet the internet found out about him bc someone went on the sugar rush subreddit and said “loved sugar rush when I was a kid, king candy was always my favorite racer!” and everyone in the comments was like “WHO??????”
YRS!!!!! I AM NOT LETTING THIS GENIOUS HIDE IN THE TAGS!!!!!!!!!!
