Once the children were asleep, Sajjad headed out on an urgent shopping mission. “We are Muslims and we’d never had a Christmas tree in our home. But these children were Christian and we wanted them to feel connected to their culture.”

The couple worked until the early hours putting the tree up and wrapping presents. The first thing the children saw the next morning was the tree.

“I had never seen that kind of extra happiness and excitement on a child’s face.“ The children were meant to stay for two weeks – seven years later two of the three siblings are still living with them.

this is a beautiful article and i just want to include a few other highlights from the above family as well as another profiled:

…she focuses on the positives – in particular how fostering has given her and Sajjad an insight into a world that had been so unfamiliar. “We have learned so much about English culture and religion,” Sajjad says. Riffat would read Bible stories to the children at night and took the girls to church on Sundays. “When I read about Christianity, I don’t think there is much difference,” she says. “It all comes from God.”
The girls, 15 and 12, have also introduced Riffat and Sajjad to the world of after-school ballet, theatre classes and going to pop concerts. “I wouldn’t see many Asian parents at those places,” she says. “But I now tell my extended family you should involve your children in these activities because it is good for their confidence.” Having the girls in her life has also made Riffat reflect on her own childhood. “I had never spent even an hour outside my home without my siblings or parents until my wedding day,” she says.
Just as Riffat and Sajjad have learned about Christianity, the girls have come to look forward to Eid and the traditions of henna. “I’ve taught them how to make potato curry, pakoras and samosas,” Riffat says. “But their spice levels are not quite the same as ours yet.” The girls can also sing Bollywood songs and speak Urdu.
“I now look forward to going home. I have two girls and my wife waiting,” says Sajjad. “It’s been such a blessing for me,” adds Riffat. “It fulfilled the maternal gap.”
[…]
Shareen’s longest foster placement arrived three years ago: a boy from Syria. “He was 14 and had hidden inside a lorry all the way from Syria,” she says. The boy was deeply traumatised. They had to communicate via Google Translate; Shareen later learned Arabic and he picked up English within six months. She read up on Syria and the political situation there to get an insight into the conditions he had left.
“It took ages to gain his trust,” she says. “I got a picture dictionary that showed English and Arabic words and I remember one time when I pronounced an Arabic word wrong and he burst out laughing and told me I was saying it wrong – that was the breakthrough.”
The boy would run home from school and whenever they went shopping in town, he kept asking Shareen when they were going back home. She found out why: “He told me that one day he left his house in Syria and when he had come back, there was no house.” Now he’s 18, speaks English fluently and is applying for apprenticeships. He could move out of Shareen’s home, but has decided to stay. “He is a very different person to the boy who first came here,” she says, “and my relationship with him is that of a mother to her son.”

What a beautifully loving family.

“why are pillowfort/ao3 asking for money?? Tumblr and LJ are free!!!”

y'all really don’t get how this works, huh?

Look y'all. Bottom line is large websites/web apps are fucking expensive

It’s not like a personal or small business site where you pay $25/mo for a shared hosting package and knock yourself out

You need multiple, dedicated, high-performance servers to handle a service like Tumblr or AO3, or Facebook, or what have you, to keep up with the insane amount of bandwidth and unfathomable amount of data.

Shit cost thousands of dollars a month. And those costs only go up the more users you have. Into the tens of thousands of dollars a month. Someone has to foot the bill for it. And that doesn’t include the salaries of the developers who pour hours of their time into making things function the way they need to.

“but Tumblr used to not have ads!!” you say! “They just got greedy!”

No, they didn’t “just get greedy”. This is how free services work. They aren’t magically able to sustain themselves. At any point. Ever.

Investors see proof of concept during the infancy of a project, and they pour their money– hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars– to 1) help fund the project into maturity. (Maturity = stable performance and a large, growing userbase) and 2) have a seat at the table when big decisions are made

Until that point, you won’t see ads, or be nagged to donate, or forced to pay a fee to access your content. That’s no accident.

Investors eat the cost of running and developing the service, because they know that once that userbase has been established, they can– you guessed it– SELL YOUR DATA TO ADVERTISERS.

They can’t do that until after they have users for advertisers to sell their shit to!

That’s how the investors make their money back, that’s how the service becomes profitable instead of being a giant cash pit.

So for the love of God, can we PLEASE stop slandering sites like AO3, Wikipedia, and now Pillowfort for having the audacity to ask for donations, or for having tiered/paid membership options for additional, non-essential features??

I knew there had to be a reason more ads show up the bigger a site gets, but never got to know all of this until now. Thanks op

The bigger a site gets, the more it costs to run, too. That’s just…a basic fact of reality.

The goatpocalypse is upon us. (via KTVBJoe)

Updates have since come on this subject; we now know where the goats came from and I gotta tell you, it is better than you could possibly imagine.  See.

These goats got loose from a goat rental service.

You may be thinking, who rents a goat?  Who rents a hundred goats?  What are they for?

They’re for eating.

Specifically, they’re for eating unwanted, flammable vegetation that can contribute to the spread of wildfires.  Some people whose property tends to grow such vegetation, keep their own goats.  But for some people it works out better to just rent some goats.

So.

These are Professional Eating Goats.  They are trained to thoroughly and methodically scour an area of plantlife.  And they came to the suburbs.

And they did their jobs.

I’m so proud of them.

all i have to say on breastfeeding is that the fact that it is even slightly controversial is just one of the many symptoms of a lecherous, sex-obsessed society. it’s an insult to the dignity of women.

Avatar

How dare society be concerned about public decency?!

(that was sarcasm)

Nobody is stopping you from breastfeeding in private.

But in public, where it could be seen by children, trauma-stricken war veterans, or the elderly?

There is a case to be made that they should be able to go about their lawful business without being exposed to the areolas of strange women with nefarious agendas.

I apologise, I meant of course

The Wars of the Breast (1967-1969)

Ah yes, those trauma stricken veterans who might have to look down the walkway of a shopping mall and see something crass and indecent like this

I definitely need therapy now. Look at all those areolas. Look at the naked women flaunting their breasts for all to see. Clearly not mothers feeding their children in the way nature gave us, in a way that’s healthiest for the baby in question.

How dare children be allowed to see a baby held close, gaining nourishment in the way they may have been fed themselves? How dare elderly folks who probably also breastfed or may have breasts themselves be exposed to a woman sitting quietly in the corner feeding her child, not trying to draw attention to herself? How dare sideboob be allowed to be seen in public when it has a biological purpose beyond arousing viewers of an underwear ad?

But, you say, what about before the baby has latched, or after it is done? What if someone sees the momentary flash of areola or nipple as the baby is transitioning?

Ah, I see you’ve got me. Areolas and nipples are inherently dirty, and are not fit for public presentation.

Oh wait. They’re not. Only female areolas and nipples are, even when they’re not being displayed purposefully.

And why is that? Because they have function? Or rather, as OP stated, because we have a lecherous, sex-obsessed society that devalues women except as sex objects? Why are female nipples banned but male nipples are fine? Is it because we view women’s breasts as sex objects, rather than the biological tools they are? Is it because men (read: heterosexual men) view them as pleasurable, and therefore they have to be hidden lest men be overcome with their sexual desires for the breast? I see no other alternative answer that wouldn’t also make male shirtlessness a crime. Either we outlaw all nipples in public places, or we have to admit that we have a societal problem with women. And based on the number of shirtless men running around in parks, on sidewalks, and sometimes in gyms, I guarantee you it’s a societal problem with women. Why else would so many people believe that feeding a child naturally is indecent?

It’s not like breastfeeding involves ripping your shirt and bra off, shouting “Look at my naked breasts!” and sitting there with a free boob hanging out while the child patiently gives everyone who wants one a good, thorough look at their mommy’s nipple. And most decent people–veterans, elderly, and children included–will not be staring the woman down waiting for the moment the child unlatches and she quickly and discreetly puts her breastfeeding pad back over the leaky milk dispenser, and slips her bra/shirt back over the whole assembly. If there are people staring her down waiting for that moment, then we have a totally different problem.

Breasts are for feeding children. We disrespect women, children, and nature itself when we say that breastfeeding is indecent and should be confined to the home. There is nothing inherently sexual about breasts, we just live in a society that has grossly manipulated our viewpoint on the female body since birth, and women and babies are paying the price.

Also, public breastfeeding is 100% legal in all 50 states, just fyi. In case anyone was still worried about public decency. You can now take it up with your lawmakers who have specifically deemed breastfeeding decent and proper in public.

man the crazy thing about babies is that like, some people would think that reading a baby a book about farm animals is teaching them about farm animals, but really it’s teaching them about the concept of a book and how there’s new information on each page of a single object, but really, beyond that, it’s teaching them how language works, and beyond that it’s really actually teaching them about human interaction, and really really it’s them learning about existing in a three-dimensional space and how they can navigate that space, but actually, above all it is teaching them that mama loves them.

oh my god. Imagine being Whoopi and hearing that though.

Well, when I was nine years old Star Trek came on,“ Goldberg says. “I looked at it and I went screaming through the house, ‘Come here, mum, everybody, come quick, come quick, there’s a black lady on television and she ain’t no maid!’ I knew right then and there I could be anything I wanted to be.” - See more at: http://www.startrek.com/database_article/goldberg-whoopi#sthash.gKeuf3XI.dpuf

That’s three generations. Nichelle Nichols to Whoopi Goldberg to Leslie Jones.

Representation fucking matters.

It’s crazy to me that even after stuff like this people can say representation is just for the sake of looking diverse and it doesn’t actually matter.

it didn’t occur to me people might not know this but notch isn’t involved with minecraft any more and in fact removing himself from the project was one of the requirements for microsoft to acquire it and it’s become increasingly obvious as to why they wanted to distance themselves and minecraft from him.
