The Hands of God: Set in a vaguely Byzantine Italian town named Mizzene, this story is narrated by Gian, the son of the ruling family of the area. As various characters, passing by, stop in Mizzene, he and his older sister deal with private desire and despair. Then a devastating disease sweeps the town and Gian is forced to watch tragedy after tragedy unfold, unable to stop any of it. Florus is obsessed with the ideal of the Roman military and, by extension, is infatuated with one soldier named Quintus Rufius Albinus, who is the other main narrator of the story.
