Fresh blood: While technically vampires do not feed on blood, the easiest source of meaningful darkness is human blood. Unfortunately, this means blood that has been exposed to light is not nutritious in the slightest.
Sunshine: Nothing eats up your supply of darkness faster than the sun. Eventually you run out of shadows and cease to be. Not good.
Bite: While it is a smidge dramatic (much easier to cut than bite, since vampire teeth don’t actually change much) so a vampire bite probably involves a blade anyway… but sometimes times are dire and gnawing your way into that meaningful darkness is the only way. But either way no puncture wounds.
Enthralled: A vampire can manipulate other’s opinions of and beliefs about them. With enough practice, this can turn into what is essentially mind control. I did not check “Master” because that’s not the vibe, usually, nor does it have anything to do with lineages or whatever.
Hunter becomes the hunted: A wraith nest is near impossible to exterminate without falling prey to it.
Came back wrong: A wraith is made primarily of what others think of them. If people have it wrong, they will change until those people have it right. It is near impossible to have long-term plans or ideas of your own as a wraith, because you will instantly forget them if you tell no one.
Silver linings: Both conditions give you superpowers. Specifically, the thing the other lacks you gain control over.
Drained: This is how you’re turned. If you lose all your own faith in yourself, without dying because no one is thinking of you, you become a wraith. This does not create amnesia, you’ll still remember what you’ve experienced, you’ll just not really remember why you did anything. To be turned into a vampire you must be drained of darkness without dying, which is hard since so much of it is in your important inside bits.
Shadows: Being a vampire leaves you deficient in shadows, and needing to feed on them to live, while being a wraith gives you power over them, the ability to create and manipulate them.
Way too hungry: This is what a wraith nest is. It can also happen to vampires, which creates a “pale” (actually they’re becoming translucent) vampire with no priorities other than feeding. This is mostly due to a lack of understanding of the conditions, like the way diabetics would waste away before insulin was discovered.
“Ethically sourced”: It is possible to keep both wraiths and vampires fed without harming anyone.
Turned: As discussed above, if drained of darkness you become a vampire. If drained of faith you become a wraith. If this occurs while you already have the other condition or both occur simultaneously you become a nihil.
Dirty Secret: As more people become aware of these conditions, they are seen as demonic, inherently violent, and evil. It takes a long time before anything approaching open peace is possible.
High stakes: These dual pandemics are killing huge numbers of people. If unchecked, with no understanding of how to manage or at least kill these things, everyone is going to die.
“That’s a misconception”: A lot of things about vampires and a few things about wraiths are broadly misunderstood. It is believed that vampires feed on blood, that only the things in wraith nests are wraiths, that vampires will visibly burn in sunlight… it goes on.
