20 days until Namor Week!

I really liked the latest Namor run. I don't think it clicked for me before that the appeal of characters like him is the opportunity for amazing illustrations of awesome sea creatures and underwater cities. It DOES NOT miss in this category.

The central premise of him trying to end a war, something Namor isn't exactly known for naturally creates a lot of fun opportunities for character exploration, which in my opinion, rules.

I love everything about issue 7. Seriously, it's great.

The whole run has this delightful quirk of using "Imperious Rex" to let you know that something badass and/or outlawed in the Geneva Convention is about to happen.

If I have to name some flaws, there's a few times toward the beginning where it feels like it's being edgy/violent/gross for no good reason. And a couple of the flashbacks don't really feel relevant to what's happening present day.

"The central premise of him trying to end a war, something Namor isn't exactly known for"

Namor has tried to make peace just as much or more than he's tried to invade the surface world. It really irks me that people think Namor is making war on the surface world for no reason when those reasons have been stated in the comics since the start "humans hurt my people/the oceans, I am the Avenging Son here to defend/avenge them" like, he isn't the warmongering character people make him out to be, he doesn't kill or seek to invade/attack the surface world without reason, and like 98% of the time he is usually justified. Aaron's writing of "Namor is now a peacemaker" isn't new, nothing Aaron did was new, except mess up long established characterization of several characters, and introduce new characters, and spend the entire series with a depressed and frankly ooc Namor, he even messed up Namor's childhood to introduce some edgy dark b.s. he constantly says "Namor doesn't cry, Namor doesn't love" when like that is the polar opposite of his character, he is very passionate and shows his emotions all the time.

The Defenders (1972) #53

The Sub-Mariner (1968) #21 - Namor is literally caught between a war between the sea and surface and is trying to get both sides to stop

As for issue 7, the issue where the "great ancient secret is revealed" is that Neptune caused the great Cataclysm because he wanted his people to be in a never ending state of warfare for his own worship?? Even though Neptune in Namor's comics has always been a benevolent figure with maybe one instance of him having to bow to the whims of the other gods, but like to Neptune, Namor isn't some tool to use for war, he's NEVER done shit like that. Namor is his special little demigod who he gives his trident/armor/blessings to. Neptune isn't a god of war, and Namor was very close to his religion/gods why would he forsake them.

If you enjoyed the series that's great but I really dislike the misinformation that Aaron did anything new with Namor's run that hasn't been done before, except make things worse in terms of characterization and plots. It's not a run I'd recommend to any fans.

To be very upfront, I'm not going to pretend to be expert, you clearly know a lot more about the guy than me. My only experience with the comic version of the character before yesterday was his appearance in the early 2018 Avengers and some X-Men pages where he's mostly standing in the background (I don't read very much X-Men either)

I've pretty much given up on consistent characterization in comics. I appreciate it when it happens, but I've lowered my expectations. Not my standards though, I absolutely understand how disappointing it is when a character is practically the opposite of how they were when you fell in love. Given my little experience with Namor, it's not something I ever considered when I was reading. That's why I didn't really write a review, and just stuck to my own impressions.

I don't disagree with anything you said, I'd still like to be clear on what I think the strengths of the series are

Great art. As far as I'm concerned, the art team are really the MVPs of this run

Rule of cool. Regardless of the actual substance of the material, I was frequently genuinely excited by what I read

And the way it handled war. I can't honestly say that Aaron's writing was groundbreaking or even particularly nuanced, (and has some immediately apparent flaws) I found the depiction of violence and the main character's relationship to it legitimately fascinating

As for the overall quality of the writing and the portrayal of established characters/settings, I really cant make any claims about that, other than I appear to be talking to an expert, and expert says it's not great, so I'm inclined to trust you on that.

There's just been better takes on the character than Aaron who I feel really regressed the character and it was him who put Namor in the background and threw Namor in comic jail for over a year because he wanted to keep Namor on the backburner for this series that doesn't deliver anything he's promised. It's not just me but several Namor fans who were not happy to have the literal worst writer of Namor of the century get his hands on the character, but like every person has their likes/dislikes. idk how to explain it, I'm not mad at fans for liking the series, I'm just distraught because you all deserve so much better writing than what we got, no issues with the art or anything, but its just I'm just frustrated because King in Black: Namor does better in terms of world building and showcasing flashbacks of namors childhood, what did Aaron's flashbacks achieve?? nothing except completely change Namor's characterization as a child.

Like all other flashbacks of Namor's childhood show him as a joyful child, one who gets bullied a lot but still has the love of his mother and its not till much later in life that Namor becomes a more world weary and closed off figure, it's fascinating to see how tired he comes over time and all the losses he endures. I cant even speak about how horrible Fen's been treated by Aaron, but the worst of all is how Aaron took away all the nuance Tha-Korr had to turn him into a one dimensional character. ugh. sorry I am ranting again, but I just wish it was better done. I'm not even a fan of Tha-Korr! He was horrid to Namor at times as a child, but he's so not a thief/petty tyrant king! aaaaa. anyways I will bow out now, I just wish we had something better, still I am looking forward to see Namor on Thunderbolts in the summer.
