how it feels to be an indie game dev

Game development tips!

  • If your ambition becomes a hindrance/roadblock, for the love of god downscope your project
  • Have fun and be yourself
  • Put bullshit dialogue to test for bugs and game mechanics. it will improve your experience tenfold. I made the Mastermind say "can I put my balls in yo jaws" and I do not regret it one bit
  • Add tiny easter eggs, they can reward the player for exploration or simply be a nice callback to another piece of media and as long as it doesn't break the mood of a scene it makes the experience better
  • Try to go at least a little bit out of your comfort zone, even if it's minimal. You can go fully out of your comfort zone if you want but getting a little experimental with what you do bit by bit will help your craft improve a lot in the long run
  • Add gay people wether its explicitly or implicitly you gotta do it
  • Sometimes "fuck it we ball" is the best possible mentality to have
  • Do whatever you want forever. yes you can also ignore these tips. i'm not your mom how could I even stop you

@crvggio I’ve been laughing at this for 47 years

Reblogging again because that last addition is IMPORTANT

But when the world needed him most, he pulled the wrong lever...

Why do they even have that lever?

Well done everyone, 10/10 post

modern day setting of laios showing kabru his 3ds and he's playing tomodachi life and he's like,

"i made a mii version of you and me but i made my mii female. anyway, our miis are married and had three kids. see? this is our third baby. she has your eyes! they all had your eyes. i'm taking care of the baby by feeding her. isn't this game funny?"

and kabru is thinking "WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??? DOES HE LIKE ME??? HE WANTS...MY BABIES???" but he's smiling and nodding at laios and saying "yeah, that is pretty funny!"

googling shit like "why do i feel bad after hanging out with my friends" and all of the answers are either "you need better friends" (i don't; my friends are wonderful) or "your social battery is drained, you need to rest and regain your energy levels" (i don't; i've got tons of energy, it's just manifesting as over-the-top neurotic mania). why is this even happening. it's like some stupid toll i have to pay as a punishment for enjoying myself too much

I actually, genuinely think social event aftercare would fix me. I need someone to put me to bed and say "you were fun today and no one hated you"

(on a post about the switch 2 being $450)

im going to be honest i think people vastly underestimate how much it takes to emulate things for good quality and how intensive piracy & emulation are. by all means im for it but you realize building a pc that can run emulators well and safely skirt viruses with torrenting is like a pretty hefty investment both timewise and moneywise. i Get that most of this website is inclined toward doing that investment because this is a website and audience bias means more technology based people will be making opinions on this. that being said: $450 is like nowhere near enough for a good quality self built pc. what the fuck are you talking about. unless youre just incredible at refurb and finding parts for a deal.

this website has many many people who just do not understand the circumstances in which piracy is the answer as well as the fact piracy is an open secret that you should be careful about discussing OR understanding the circumstances in which it would be more beneficial to not pirate something. i had a post blow up when minecraft was having a sale last year for $15 and people kept chanting to pirate instead and open their home ports for a server to the point that i was honestly appalled at like... you realize the reason people want a legal minecraft account is to play multiplayer with friends. you realize not everyone has the safety measures in place to safely operate a multiplayer server on a home port. nor the machine able to do that. many people on this website vastly overestimate the average person's abilities to be technologically competent to the point it is legitimately dangerous for privacy concerns to be suggesting the things you may be suggesting!! and it drives me up the wall!! have some CONCERN or understanding of other people's machines and technology that not everyone is as tech literate as you!!!!!!! you CANNOT just tell people to jump straight into the fire with Just pirate! or Just open your modem's ports for a server! or Just crack the game! This shit can be dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. Teach safety with doing all of this is what I'm saying. Be careful.

"developing country" is not a great term but if people insist on using it i demand we also use "undeveloping country." for example I'm from the u.s. and my country is currently in a state of undevelopment

I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip

Using a random fic of mine as example..

The left example: ✅✅✅

The right example: ❌❌❌

Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!

If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…

This is a good thing to keep in mind! It is often and unfortunate that a really good fic doesn’t get love because its formatting makes it too difficult to read!

I think I figured out why this happens!

AO3's posting form has two modes: Rich Text and HTML. the vast majority of people write in Rich Text editors, aka any normal word processing software (MS Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages, what have you). but when you first open it, the posting form opens in HTML view. if you paste formatted text into HTML view, it erases every piece of formatting, including paragraph spacing.

this is an easy fix. when you go to post your fic, make sure the posting form looks like this:

not like this:

and please spread the word! this is an important piece of computer literacy that nobody is teaching to the new generations and they deserve to know

Oh, if you're posting by copying from tumblr and pasting to AO3, use Rich Text. It'll keep the paragraph spacing. If you don't, you get the jammed up version.

Just want to add, if you post in HTML you can still go in there and add line breaks/paragraph breaks.

Sometimes I have to adjust the breaks in rich text, too. Point is you don't have to leave a wall of text as-is. You can fix that before posting. Please do!

This one came out crunchy looking but I refuse to put in the effort of cleaning it up
