not to be a killjoy but it's still crazy to me that it's considered mean to be like "maybe you should read / play / watch the source material before creating fanworks and diving into the fandom" bc every time i see somebody going "i havent played disco elysium or know anything about it tbh but uwu here's harry and kim kissing" idk maybe you should engage with it. maybe you should play the anti-capitalist surrealist game where you investigate the murder of a mercenary who led the gang rape of a foreign girl and process that for a bit? and then you can do cutesy mlm or whatever idc. but like at the absolute bare minimum you should understand what the source material involves otherwise we get the phenomenon of people joining a dragon age server and wanting content warnings for like, mage racism. like it's fine to ship and transform the genre into whatever but if you arent comfortable with discussions of the actual source content itself then maybe the fandom isnt for you and a different one is. peace and love.

actual peace and love would involve letting anyone who wants to do things do them, without judgment.

I don't think there is anything unreasonable about the idea that if someone isn't comfortable with actual discussions of the source material they should probably not insert themselves into the fandom. And I struggle to see how this has anything to do with ableism as per your tags.

Well, when you demand a certain amount of effort to be input before you consider someone's creative work valid, that's ableist.

The issue at hand isn't one of the validity of transformative works (and I agree with you there that art doesn't derive meaning or validity from the amount of "effort" poured into it) but of fandom social dynamics and the very simple fact that people involved in a fandom will find people who have not engaged with the source material yet insist on inserting themselves into the fandom annoying. This user articulated it well imo and I'm tired right now:

Unfortunately it's still gatekeeping and still ableist.

I genuinely think it's neither of those things.

i show up to the Planes Enjoyer Convention to talk about how pretty planes are. to my shock i learn planes fly which is awful because i'm scared of heights.

despite me being very passionate, nobody wants to hear about my novel where i imagine planes as types of burrowing creatures. instead people tell me i don't seem very interested in planes or the Planes Enjoyer Convention. this is very mean and judgemental.

eventually i strike up a conversation with someone and they reveal that planes are sometimes used for wars, and they actually like historical "war planes". my heart sinks.

they seem surprised and suggest that i read up about planes. that's just unacceptable. i call them an ableist gatekeeper and protest as i mime being forcibly escorted out of the convention by the security guards i made up in my head.

see the THING IS I don't feel like I ever worked hard enough to have "earned" the burnout, which is. probably how we got here.

Y'know when you're doing a quick painting study and get all swept up in the moment 😅 I didn't know this would turn out so hyper-realistic, I'm suddenly nervous about AI accusations for the first time in my art journey (fuck AI, to be clear)

I spent a good chunk of my weekend scrambling to finish this comic. I hope you like it. I was really trying to push myself with the colours.

You know what’s wild? This comic still gets reblogged every single day. I made it so long ago it doesn’t even feel like my own work haha. Anyways, I guess I’m glad people still like it but it’s very weird to have One Piece of Art that Doesn’t Fade.

i learned about the hatchling's companion childhood doll in the concept art a few months ago but it just reentered my mind recently. first: it's super sweet and i like that it shows their young age and how hatchy copes with being alone in space. it seems to be a sentimental item.

now, i'm just wondering how the doll came to be. personally, i imagine a lot of clothes get reused or handed down to others until it becomes rags (i think there's a word for this but i can't recall it :P). maybe the doll was created from these scraps.

i really like the idea that the doll was a hand-me-down of sorts. but from who? i haven't figured that out yet...

of course, this is only thoughts regarding concept art (o゜▽゜)o☆

have a baby hatchy to go with my thoughts.

i love how whenever something gets popular the underground tormented avant garde bloggers start becoming self conscious of liking it/finding it funny, and it eventually evolves into aggression towards it. doesnt matter what it is. unrelated but i saw someone call isopods cringe today

This is the most important post on this site

hi hi! may i say i love the special connection you gave to feldspar and gneiss 🥺 this interpretation means everything to me

Thank you!! It's so funny cuz that relationship really came from nothing. In the original game, nothing indicates that these two were close. I just noticed that little dialogue Gneiss gives in the game when talking about Feldspar's harmonica, and how they haven't heard it in a while, and felt like there was a hint of sadness in that dialogue... and I just ran with it lol Also Gneiss always felt very "motherly" to me. Like a very sweet grandparent with a lot of history. Making them raise and watch Feldspar grow felt special to me.

I have a looot of Feldspar and Gneiss content that I need to post! I will post it sometime soon! In the meantime: A sketch!

Hey!! I absolutely love your work, it’s inspired me to make my own things for Outer Wilds recently. I wanted to ask if could we see more of your interpretation of Gossan and Porphy, though! Even just your thoughts on them!

Sorry, I constantly forget to answer messages!! Anyway, time to rant about Gossan and Porphy!!

So, funny enough: While I often draw them kissing and hugging and being madly in love, I actually believe they're not as passionate as I make them appear to be. I believe they're very flirty, often showing affection towards each other, but they've probably kissed a few times only? I don't believe Hearthians are extremely romantic people, and I don't believe the couples tend to stay forever committed to each other. THAT BEING SAID: They are very in love your honor!

To give some history with them two: I believe Porphy was the first to be interested in Gossan. I believe they were admiring Gossan in their teenage years because they were part of the cool space program, and Gossan was very brave without being as crazy as Feldspar and Slate. Gossan's feelings only developped when they both got a little older: Porphy being the new winemaker would constantly ask for Gossan's opinion on their recipes or whenever they needed help (Not at all to get their attention). and while I believe Gossan have an extremely strong bond with Feldspar, I believe they enjoyed a lot the peace and softness coming from Porphy. (I made a comic about that that I don't think I posted here yet?)

I think one thing that really made them close was Gossan's injury. It was the time when they felt very close and talked a lot, it was the time where Gossan could really open up about their stuggles and the grief of losing Feldspar. I truely think they became quite serious at this time I believe they both are quite secretive about their flirting because they know everyone would tease them if ther revealed their relationship (meanwhile EVERYONE knows there's something there lmao) One last thing: I believe Porphy is very supportive of Gossan's friendship with Feldspar. Not very important but it matters to me lol.

I just love them your honor <3

SUNRISE, PARABELLUM!

Insane how some choices of colours can bring certain things to mind (it's giving very 70s) (positive)
