Odd Little Stories

@oddlittlestories

This is accidentally a House MD blog now oops. (Bee, she/her)

Welcome to Bee's House

It's the worst pun ever! I am finally making a pinned note.

This is MOSTLY a House MD blog. But now it has HEMA and fibercrafts too. Some other shows, audio dramas, and books sneak in there. Beware of untagged House MD spoilers.

I write fic, headcanons, meta, silly stuff. I love basically all the MCs, and I occasionally focus in on the ones I feel need more love.

who doesn't love a ball toy pit?

ever wondered how many crabs might fit in a confined space? what number of horses might go into a padded pool? what quantity of paws might populate a pit typically filled with colorful plastic balls? well, you’re in luck.

for no reason at all, we have decided to make you do some math: we have filled a ball pit measuring exactly 32” x 8" with some true tumblr icons. more pics below (including, of course, a banana for scale). you have 24 hours to guess how many of each toy appears. good luck!

but that's not all—we have more polls for your guessing pleasure:

poll 1: how many crabs have infested the pool? poll 2: what number of mini horse friends? poll 3: how many tiny toe beans are contained within?

happy voting!

well folks, after 24 hours in the ball toy pit and a total of 219,643 total votes across the polls, it's time to find out who was right!

there were a total of 773 toys in the pit, making 30.1% of the 79,326 people who voted correct! as far as individual toys go, here's the breakdown:

crabs: 239 (19.6% of the 44,845 votes) horses: 299 (27.5% of the 45,270 votes) paws: 235 (27.7% of the 50,202 votes)

we had a blast looking through the notes at all your very complicated math—truly impressive!

I cannot emphasize enough how rude it is to correct someone's pronunciation without them asking for your help to correct their pronunciation. This especially goes for when you're a native speaker and the person you're talking to is a second language speaker. Unless you are their teacher, you don't have any right to correct them unless they ask for your help in improving their pronunciation.

This is especially a huge issue in Iceland. I think because immigrants living in Iceland and speaking Icelandic as a second language is a fairly new phenomenon, Icelandic people really have no idea how to treat second language speakers respectfully and courteously. I find in countries where second language speakers are more common, it's part of the culture's manners and decorum on how to treat second language speakers with respect, well, at least among the population that's more open minded and accepting of foreigners.

But at least in Iceland, even among people who consider themselves progressive and open minded, they often still don't know how to speak to immigrants with Icelandic as a second language without being patronizing and degrading. A lot of immigrants in Iceland will tell me they usually can't go more than a few minutes speaking to an Icelander without being corrected in a patronizing and degrading manner (like said Icelander using a tone like they're an idiotic little child), even if said Icelander is a hip and cool progressive university student who goes out and protests for LGBT+ rights / women's rights / animal rights / etc.

I understand there are some circumstances where you might *really* find it necessary to correct someone's pronunciation, such as if they mangle it so badly that you genuinely do not understand what they're trying to say. But even then, you should never use a tone towards a grown adult like they're a child. You should always treat second language speakers with respect and still treat them as your equal. If you wouldn't patronizingly correct a fellow native speaker using a tone like they're an idiotic little child for saying something wrong, you certainly shouldn't do that to a second language speaker, because contrary to popular belief they're equally as human and adult as a native speaker.

I'd just like to clarify some things about Senator Cory Booker's marathon Senate speech in protest of the present administration and everything they are doing to the American people.

Senator Booker was NOT allowed to sit down, eat, or use the bathroom during his speech. Sitting or leaving the room to use the bathroom would be considered yielding the floor. Eating would have interfered with his speaking and the person who has the senate floor must continue to speak, except when listening to questions that they will then answer.

He only took occasional sips of water.

The person who previously held the record for longest speech on the Senate floor did have bathroom breaks and also did things like read from the encyclopedia.

Senator Booker did not do that. His speech was to point out the damage that this administration is doing and he stayed on that subject.

Senator Booker's speech did reach many people. It wasn't a silly stunt that was done so that he could take the record for longest speech. He wanted to show the country that democrats will do something to bring attention to the problems we are facing. That democrats are listening to them.

Senator Cory Booker spoke for 25 hours and 4 minutes to "make good trouble."

If your goals basically amount to "after The Revolution everything will be great because people will all have the Good Ethics and work together in my Perfect System and the Evil People with Bad Morals and Bad Behaviour who are making this world bad will be gone (killed/imprisoned/exiled/all converted to agree with us when they see our Perfect System)" then that's just fascism. I hate to say it but you've put a gay socialist hat on fascism.

The MAGA people are still gonna be around in your Perfect System and a very large proportion of them are still gonna be Like That. We can discourage antisocial behaviour through laws and education and changing cultural norms, but if plans for future society involve [group I'm opposed to] magically not being part of it so the Good People can Do Things Right, well.

✨No Bad Guys Here✨ - how do you want to enforce that.

Honestly, I think this concept of The Revolution is to some leftists what Armageddon is to some Christians: an easy excuse to not try and grapple with difficult problems like hunger or poverty or injustice or climate, because any day now the Great Reckoning will come and wipe the slate clean.

imma say it. “kung fu panda” did more for body positivity and saying that  you can be fat and still be healthy and liked than ANYTHING any beauty companies trying to get your money.

kfp also respects women more than any beauty company too.

also it had a positive relationship between an adopted child and his stepfather even after he found out he was adopted

Hey yknow how Viper was born without fangs, but instead of being rendered helpless as her family thought she’d be, she instead used her other skills to become the best warrior in her clan?

And how Tigress had severe, destructive anger issues when she was younger, but instead of being painted as a “problem child” she was instead taught her how to channel her emotions into something constructive?

And how Crane trained extra hard to impress a girl, and was by all rights the hero of his own story, but he still didn’t get her in the end? And how the girl isn’t shamed for it?

It’s almost as if you get more mileage out of treating your characters (and the people they resemble) with compassion than you do just shamelessly stamping them with your own misconceptions and hang ups.

The whole central ethos of the franchise is that there’s no such thing as being The Best™ - there’s just being the best version of yourself you can be, and honoring/channeling your own strengths is the wise and badass thing to do.
