i really think the purpose of Pope Innocent III writing a book on the misery of the human condition was to set a proper foundation for viewing the world that allows one to not only notice Jesus Christ and the Divine Love in other people but rejoice in it more than one would otherwise
if one starts out with a view that humanity is sweet and innocent it leads to consistent disappointment by the grave depravity of the world around them; if one starts out with a view that humanity is fallen and wicked then even the smallest gestures of kindness experienced by others stands out as truly an act accompanied by Divine grace
i know i have not internalized this yet because people continually stun me into a quasi-depressive state by casually committing grave evils with zero scruples
