This allusion to Icarus isn't even trying to be subtle. This was the first time Hawks' wings were depicted in their full glory, and it came with the overbearing light of the spotlights shining down on the base of his wings.

It's a neon flashing light to include imagery like this for Hawks' introduction. The message is clear: this character is an Icarus who will fall after his wings melt from flying too high, straight into the sun.

There's an interesting juxtaposition between Hawks' words and how he appears in this arc. He speaks as if he wants to take it easy while being drawn like a man with ambitions that will eventually burn him to the ground.

I skimmed through the BnHA manga during the first reading and now I'm paying more attention to the details on a second read-through. Somehow I completely overlooked Aoyama's profile page in volume 2.

Go on king, give us nothing!!

The early profiles are all a little lacking, probably because Horikoshi was still fleshing out their personalities, but this is suspiciously lacking.

My guy breaks the 4th wall by looking directly at the reader/viewer almost any time he's not active, from his first appearance in volume 1 until the reveal in volume 34.

Honorable mention goes to volume 10 of the manga which has the beginning of the All For One vs All Might fight and features the only character on the spine art who 1) looks troubled and 2) is not looking out at the reader.

Now that everything has been revealed, it's wild to see how far back Horikoshi has been dropping hints. I thought the Aoyama Eye Contact™️ thing was a gag relating to his ego and totally missed the obvious clue on his profile page.
