Hello! I was wondering what the difference between robes ร  la franรงaise and robes ร  l'anglaise is? (And maybe a basic summary of each if it isn't too much trouble?) Merci!

Avatar

Sure! I think itโ€™s a good time to go back to the basics for anyone who is new in the 18th century fashion.

The robe ร  la franรงaise and the robe ร  lโ€™anglaise are the two iconic dresses of the century, and are practically the base for all other dresses. Both dresses change silhouettes, skirt shapes, volume and details, through the century, but remained clearly differentiated from one another.

First of all, we have the names you can find both gowns known as:

Robe ร  la franรงaise. Meaning โ€œFrench gownโ€ or โ€œFrench style gownโ€, can be also known as: sack back gown, sacque, or Watteau gown (if you find 19th century info about this dress, you might find this term, that is not contemporary of the 18th century). When people think of 18th century womenswear, they usually think of this dress.

robe ร  la franรงaise, 1765-70 // robe ร  la franรงaise, 1740s // robe ร  la franรงaise, 1710-1770, all The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Robe ร  lโ€™anglaise. Literally โ€œEnglish style gownโ€. Also known as close-bodied gown, or English gown.

robe ร  lโ€™anglaise, 1785-87 // robe ร  lโ€™anglaise, 1750-75 // robe ร  lโ€™anglaise, 1750-75, all The Metropolitan Museum of Art

These two dresses might share several details in design, but the key difference is simply the back:

Loose pleats for the robe ร  la franรงaise, and fitted pleats for the anglaise (yes! Those are not cuts, but pleats in the back, stitched to fit close to the body!)

Robe ร  la franรงaise, 1750-1770, Met Museum // Robe ร  lโ€™anglaise, ca. 1770, both The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Traditionally, a French gown has an open front with a stomacher, and an English gown has a closed front, but they can have any kind of front, since what gives them the name, are the backs.

robe ร  la franรงaise, 1775-80 // robe ร  la franรงaise, ca. 1760 // robe ร  la franรงaise, 1770-75, all The Metropolitan Museum of Art
robe ร  lโ€™anglaise, ca. 1770 // robe ร  lโ€™anglaise, ca. 1770 // robe ร  lโ€™anglaise, ca. 1745, altered 1770s, all The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Both dresses can also be worn retousรจe or ร  la polonaise, which is when you lift the back of the upper skirt with ties or though the pockets, BUT a robe ร  la polonaise is a different kind of dress!

Robe retroussee dans les poches, 1780, Kyoto Costume Insitute // robe ร  la polonaise, ca. 1780, Met Museum
Note: The first is a robe ร  la franรงaise (worn retousรฉe dans les poches, like the Kyoto title indicates), and the second a robe ร  lโ€™anglaise worn ร  la polonaise, but I left the title by the Met (if someone wants to look for the item, the title would be needed).

1930s news about a trans woman: Well I'll be curfuffled young Corlotta Jhonson has transformed herself from a dandy into a dame and what a Bombshell she's become. And How!

1930s news about trans men: Wanted dead or alive this young lady who started wearing trousers, the tomboy terror known only as The Crust is wanted for snorting the President's personal stash of opium and has slain nearly every senate member in a pistol duel.

I'm a huge fan of the early 1900s/late 1800s Mexican (?) transmasc who would threaten to shoot anybody who called him a girl. Looked like a total badass too. Please somebody know who I'm talking about.

I do know who you're talking about but can't remember his name.

His name is Amelio Robles. Just so people have the information โœจ

This is the colorized picture of Colonel Amelio Robles รvila from 1915

I love how everyone in the notes is claiming that this post is about a different trans man. They were all like that back then.

Omg what?!?! Itโ€™s the LAST day for Big Bang surveys?!?! And all you need to do is join our discord to be a part of this super amazing event?!?!?!

๐ŸŒŸ A Plea from Gaza: Rolaโ€™s Story ๐ŸŒŸ

Hello, my name is Rola, and I am a mother of two children living in the Gaza Strip. Our lives were once filled with love, laughter, and dreams for the future. But everything changed on October 7th, when the war shattered not only our home but our entire world.

That morning, my family and I were enjoying coffee together on the balcony. Out of nowhere, an explosion erupted, shaking our home violently. My husband and son ran for cover, falling over each other in panic, while I stood frozen, still holding my cup, unable to process the chaos around me. When I looked out the window, I saw that our neighborโ€™s house, once filled with life, had been reduced to rubble. Ambulances rushed to the scene as people scrambled to rescue the injured and pull bodies from the debris.

The bombings didnโ€™t stop. At night, the rain poured heavily, and the cold seeped into our bones. I stayed awake, covering my children to keep them warm and praying for their safety. But safety is an illusion here. Another explosion shattered the night, and our neighborsโ€™ home was destroyed. Their children, who had been sleeping peacefully under a blanket, were found lifeless, their cover soaked in blood.

I looked at my children with tears in my eyes and thought, How can I protect you? We had to flee our home with nothing but the clothes on our backs. We left behind my childrenโ€™s toys, their clothes, and their beautiful bedroom. Everything we had worked so hard to build is gone.

Our Current Reality Now, we are displaced and living in a nightmare. Food is scarce, and prices are unimaginably highโ€”$10 for a kilo of sugar! The fear of death hangs over us constantly. My children deserve a life of joy and hope, not one defined by fear and loss. Why canโ€™t we live like everyone elseโ€”go to work, visit family, and watch our children play in safety? Why do our children have to grow up surrounded by death and destruction?

How You Can Help I am pleading for your kindness to help us rebuild our lives. We need your support to: ๐Ÿ’” Rebuild our home, so my children can feel safe again. ๐ŸŒ Evacuate from Gaza, seeking a future where my family can live with dignity. ๐Ÿฉบ Provide urgent medical care for my children, who need protection from this nightmare.

Even the smallest donation can make a difference. If you canโ€™t donate, please share my story. Every share brings us closer to hope.

What Your Support Means Your kindness is not just about helping us survive; itโ€™s about giving us a chance to dream again. To rebuild what weโ€™ve lost and to ensure my children have a future filled with possibilities, not fear.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Your support means the world to us. Letโ€™s work together to rebuild hope, one step at a time.

๐ŸŒธ Please share our story and consider donating today. ๐ŸŒธ

Together, we can create a better tomorrow. ๐ŸŒโค๏ธ

I was asked by a friend yesterday if I could offer basic tips about comic paneling. As it turns out, I have a lot to say on the matter! I tried breaking down the art of paneling using the principles of art and design, and I hope it helps you out!

EDIT: uh uh there are a lot of people reblogging this, so i figure i may as well append this now while i can lol

This whole thing was very much cranked out in a few hours so I had a visual to talk about with a friend! If this gives you a base understanding of paneling, that's awesome! Continue to pull in studies from the comics you see and what other artists do well and don't do well! You can tell paneling is doing well when the action is flowing around in its intended reading format.

Here's the link to the globalcomix article from which I pulled the images about panel staggering! Someone sent in a reblog that it wasn't totally clear that the 7th slide mostly covers what NOT to do in regards to staggering, and that is my mistake!

I saw in a tag that someone was surprised I used MamaYuyu too, and I don't blame them lol. If I had given myself more than a couple hours maybe I would have added something else on, I just really admire MamaYuyu's paneling personally.

uh uh, final append: I am by no means a renowned master of paneling, so if you find anything off base here, by all means, counter it with your own knowledge and ways you can build upon from here! Art is always a sum knowledge of everything we find. ๐Ÿ’ช
