Practice for the (He)art

@practicefortheheart / practicefortheheart.tumblr.com

(Fan) art blog with some extra randomness! Nina, she/her, thirtysomething, librarian. ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™

Send me an art prompt!

I'd like to practice more, and to try out new styles and subjects. You can help me by sending me a prompt. Send me an emoji + a number, and I will consult my vast reference collection to make you a thing! Couldbe a doodle, a study, a sketch dump,...anything goes, really.

๐ŸŒณ + a number for a landscape / nature inspired

๐Ÿ™‚ + a number for a portrait

๐Ÿ’ + a number for something cute (fanart possible, but no guarantee!)

๐Ÿ”ฎ + a number for a mystery prompt (could be anything!)

erm, I'm not sure what is going on, but I've seen some worrying posts about tumblr being in trouble

I can't tell you how much I would hate to see this site tank, because I haven't found any other place to enjoy fandom in this way and I would miss all of you like a limb

anyway, I do have a pillowfort I haven't been on in YEARS but IF this site is going down that's where I'll go probably?

anyone have better ideas or alternatives?

I love you all, I hope this ship can stay above water

You guys, I am totally consumed by the Nightrunner series and so should you, it is GREAT

Okay, I'll say a bit more about WHY you should check it out (with the caveat that I have read 1 book and a bit of the second one):

  • It's a great classic fantasy series, with world building, political intrigue, made-up languages, magic, archers, swords, evil forces and all that delicious stuff
  • there are 7 books in this series
  • this series is OLD (first book published in 1996) but author Lynn Flewelling was way ahead of her time (and this IS a spoiler, kind of, but it may get some more people to rad it) and this book features bisexual male main characters who get together at some point in the series, a society where sex is not a big deal, and a matrilineal society in which a lot of positions of power are held by women.
  • there is also a prequel series which features a trans main character

I know that nowadays there is no shortage of fantasy lgbtq+ stories, but let's be honest: a lot of those are thin on plot and heavy on smut. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it is refreshing to have it the other way around sometimes. If I want smut I know where to find it, but a good fantasy story that sweeps me up and doesn't let me go is harder to come by.

I gather that this series will feature sex (I mean it does, it is talked about plenty, and sex has been happening "off screen") but not of the explicit variety. That was a bit too much for the nineties I suppose, but we can fill in the gaps and read between the lines, can't we?

Also this is a beautiful slow burn, and I can't wait for it to pay off.

If any of you have read it, and want to talk to me about it, please do! If you haven't read it, and you have more questions, message me! I love talking about books!

(and IF you have read it, that first mention of talรญ had me screaming into a pillow, that was written so well, I want to cry, I LOVE the slow realization)

I needed to draw something simple and lighthearted to lift my own mood tonight and since I am currently rereading Luck in the Shadows I decided to go with a scene in which Seregil instructs his new apprentice in the intricacies of table etiquette. To his own dismay Alec cannot really get himself to appreciate the enjoyment of shellfish...

Knowing a fic author through AO3 is like attending someoneโ€™s thesis presentation and politely clapping at the end, knowing a fic author through this hellsite is like going over to their house at 3AM to watch them eat mayonnaise out of a jar

Sometimes I attend somebodyโ€™s thesis presentation and Iโ€™m so impressed that I follow them home to watch them eat mayonnaise out of a jar at 3am.

Sometimes I watch someone eat mayonnaise out of a jar at 3am with such fervour I am compelled to attend their thesis presentation
