They don't let you write linguistic papers like this no more :(
[Screenshot that reads: "This paper brings the reader the following news: Lexicalism is dead, deceased, demised, no more, passed on…. The underlying suspicion was wrong and the leading idea didn’t work out. This failure is not generally known because no one listens to morphologists."]
Guy really has a way with words huh
["I will scream in agony if I read or hear anyone summarizing this paper as, “Marantz argues grammatical theory would be simpler without a lexicon,” or, “the paper shows that-"]
["word-sized domains are morphologists, and when morphologists talk, linguists nap."]
And also very very sad people don't care about morphology :( </3
[3. “Remarks on Nominalization” kills lexicalism to death]

We owe it to our commitment to the truth, to not interfere in the story. That is the choice. The moment we act, we are involved with creating the story, and as we become a part of it, it becomes partially about us, and the truth then may never be known. Actors cannot be unbiased. Actors become targets. RIP spaghetti belongings.

a few doors down from me my neighbors have a squirrel bar nailed to the tree in front of the sidewalk, not exactly this but something like this:
it's been there for years and they never "stock" it so it's just sitting there. anyway, i thought it would be cute to make a little squirrel out of sculpey and leave it on one of the stools in the middle of the night. i also made a little sculpey beer bottle with its own label.
it lasted exactly one day and now it is gone. it didn't fall off, i stuck it on with tape. what do you think happened to it? your most fantastical and wrong answers only, please
HUGE NEWS HUGE UPDATE
squirrel REAPPEARED today... NOW PAINTED
Do you know what I think about a lot?
Merry and Pippin's parents. And their uncertainty.
It's well implied that Gandalf informed Sam's father of his whereabouts, and obviously Frodo was living well on his own by the time of his journey. But neither Merry nor Pippin were ever supposed to go with Frodo. And probably never told anyone they were leaving either. Not expecting to be gone so long...
How long did it take their mothers and fathers to realize that their boys had gone missing? What did they feel when they realized they didn't know where they had gone? Fear? Worry? Anger? Regret? ... Grief? As more time passed who thought the worst, and who still kept up hope that one day their sons might come home?
Paladin and Eglantine's only son. What was it like, for Pippin's sisters, to lose their brother they had known since a baby? Pippin was so young. Just a curious boy. What trouble did he get himself into?
Saradoc and Esmeralda's only child. What was it like for Merry's parents, having a suddenly empty nest where their child once was? Merry was so independent. A courageous young man. Had danger finally got the better of him?
Even during the Scouring of the Shire, did they think of their Merry and Pippin, lost somewhere unknown, hoping wherever they were, they were safe? Because perhaps there was fear soon there might not be a Shire for them to return to.
What was it they saw the day they returned? A ghost? A miracle? A glimmer of hope? A miscreant who never bothered to tell their parents where they went? A knight, so unlike the boy they knew? Or simply their son. Changed, but home at last.
I'm literally tearing up.
“WHAT IS THAT THING?!” “Oh, that’s the Beast; that’s not its name, exactly, that’s just what folks call it around here. It’s been protecting our town and guarding our borders for generations.”
I had never seen anything like it before.
Its scales shone like a freshly polished blade, its massive legs were thicker than tree trunks, its hands were small and atrophied to a near-comical extent, and its teeth almost looked like they were carved into its jaws.
I couldn't help but follow it.
It didn't take long for it to spot me.
"What little human want?"
IT CAN TALK!?
"YOU CAN TALK!?"
It tilted its head in confusion, an oddly endearing expression.
"Of course me talk. Me king."
"O-oh. I, uh, I didn't think..."
"You not think... what?"
"I didn't think the Beast could talk."
It reared up, looking utterly offended.
"BEAST!?" it roared, looking towards the village, "RUDE HUMANS! DESTROY!"
"WAIT! Don't-!"
I tripped on a branch trying to chase after the creature. Fortunately it didn't seem to have an easy time with the woods, and had to go around to reach the village. I didn't have that problem and was able to slip between the trees to cut it off.
"I don't think they meant anything by it!"
"What puny human mean?"
"I... don't think they know your name?"
We stared at each other for a full minute, my brown eyes meeting his glowing blue. Just when I thought he was just gonna step on me and torch the village, he snorted.
"Me been here long time," he told me, "how they not know?"
"I mean... maybe you've been here too long?" I figured, "it's like the blue-eyed witch. She's been here forever too, but no one knows her name either."
"Who?"
"EXACTLY!" I rolled up my sleeve, showing off her gift, "Everyone knows her, but no one knows who she is, even though she helps everyone who finds her."
My left arm was my prized possession. An amalgam of steel and flesh that joined cleanly into my shoulder. Despite it being metal, I could feel the digits as if they were my own fingers.
"I came to her when I was fifteen. I'd lost my arm in a goblin attack and couldn't work. She made this in her forge and just gave it to me! I honestly thought I was looking at a decade of serfdom, but she wouldn't hear it."
The Beast, I really needed to learn his name, suddenly leaned forward. I felt air rush past me as he took a deep sniff.
"Sister."
I was floored, "What?"
"Sister made arm."
"...Ok, no. HOW is the Blue Eyed Witch your sister?"
"We same."
"She's a five-foot-eight girl!"
"She old."
"...Older than you?"
"Eh. Little. Eight years."
The idea that anything could be older than this thing was completely unbelievable to me.
"How... how old are you?"
The Beast looked to the North, towards the Old Ruins. Ancient skeletal remains of steel and glass towers that had somehow avoided crumbling under their own weight.
"Ten thousand winters," he replied, "little more, or little less. That was city once. Smelly city. Hated it... miss it."
He suddenly turned back to me.
"Name?"
I jumped.
"Huh?"
"Name. Yours?"
"Oh! I'm Miko. My party and I are here for work," I turned slightly to show him my lute, "I'm the bard. It's why I needed this arm. Need two hands to play, y'know?"
"Hm. Blue Eye Witch is Sari. Good friend. Good sister."
"That's nice..." guess I know the Witch's name now, "and yours?"
"Hm?"
"Your name!"
"Ah! Me Grimlock!"
Welp, guess I gotta come up with a plot now.
I'll keep y'all posted.

my favourite trope is “antagonist and protagonist narrowly avoiding each other in the same space” and The Emperor’s New Groove nails it perfectly I wish more media did stuff like this
Emperor’s New Groove was ahead of its time for a multitude of reasons lmao

imagine you and your cultivation sect are fighting your worst enemies in a village and oopsies you kind of accidentally destroy the village and kill everyone in it and you don’t even defeat your enemies in a way that really matters, these things happen oh well. but then as you’re picking through the aftermath some random village kid shows up and sees that their whole family is dead and they beg you to take them in so that they can become powerful and get revenge. and you check the kid out and they’ve got insane aptitude. like this kid could be a once in a generation talent, and they could be your asset against your enemies. however there is a risk that they could find out you were the ones who killed your village and then they’d turn against you, however 2.0 technically your enemies killed their village also so like even if the truth comes out there’s a way to spin this to your advantage. so now you have a decision to make.
