How to Heal a Herbalist

Entry for Day 1 of Obiyuki Madness 2025 (better than never :D) for @snowwhite-andtheknight: caregiver reversal.

~~~
“Herbalists,” Obi said airily, barely audible over the crunching of snow underfoot, “make the worst patients.”
Miss lifted her head from where it had been resting against the back of his neck, and made an indignant noise that was far cuter than it was intimidating. “You have clearly,” she began in a stern tone, the effect somewhat dampened by the congestion already overpowering her sinuses with a vengeance, “never treated assassins. They are very,” she sneezed, “stubborn.”
I do love that in Rohan culture, it seems that it's the custom for men to go out and fight and die heroically, and for women to honour their sacrifice by crying over their bodies or at their funerals. The men are to be brave, the woman to be loving. The men are to do great things. The women are to remember.
But in the film, whereas Eowyn's most iconic moment is her slaying of the Witch King, a great, heroic deed that cements her place in history, Eomer's most iconic moment is (arguably) his guttural scream when he sees Eowyn dead on the ground, dropping to his knees and cradling her to his chest.
Not only is Eowyn's most iconic moment a scene in which she takes on, by her culture's definition, the man's role, the most important role of a man, to die heroically, Eomer's most iconic moment is when he takes on the "woman's" role, to grieve.
I do love his "Death!" charge in the books so much, but because of this parallel between the siblings, I also love the film version where there is no battle for him to fight, no justice for him to wreak, there's nothing for him to do but cradle Eowyn to his chest and rock her back and forth.
Thinking of the larger context of LOTR and like, the fellowship swapping old war stories and shit and Sam just says “Yeah I killed a huge spider…Shelob, I think?”
And Gandalf just blinks and is like, “You what now?”
“Yeah, killed it. Had to save Frodo”
Gandalf elects not to tell Sam that he killed the spawn of a primordial demon.
Meanwhile, in the background, Merry and Pippin are trying to figure out just how big this spider had to be to get that double-take from Gandalf. Gimli is pondering over the memories of ancient texts and stories told over the fire of the creature, and attempting to discern the sheer magnitude of what Sam has accomplished.
And Legolas is busy planning the absolute feast/party/rave the Mirkwood elves are absolutely going to throw once they find out what happened.
I can't believe Sorata Akizuki said "what if a feral cat were a guy?" And then gave us him
I've never seen more of a cat guy in my life. Cat eyes. Cat stealth. Cat movements. Cat killing instincts. Cat naps. When they find him he's feral and killing for a living. They offer him food and shelter and he's like mm dunno how I feel about that. But then he stays forever. He has trusted people. He's always in a tree
Stabs and Stubbornness
Day 2 of the Obiyuki Do-Si-Do, inspired by this story by @puffdragongirl Thanks to her, and to @snowwhite-andtheknight for setting this challenge up!
"She's going to figure it out."
Obi turned around, bandage still clenched in his teeth, and looked at his second in command who sat on the bench next to him. The remaining knights had long since filed out of the room, eagerly seeking warm food, warm beds, or warm company after their latest patrol in the icy wilderness around Lyrias. He had encouraged Sashizu to join them, but in hindsight, he should have known that his exceedingly loyal second-in-command would not have left him alone, given that he had been injured.
Grabbing the end of the bandage before letting go with his teeth, Obi pulled the white fabric taut and wrapped it briskly around the wound just below the scar on his shoulder. "Figure what out?"
A lesser man would have rolled his eyes, but Sashizu settled for a slight twitch of his eyebrows as his gaze swept over his commander's wounded shoulder that had already begun to sluggishly seep crimson into the layers of bandage. "That you were injured, sir."
A New Journey
Entry for Day 1 of the Obiyuki Do-Si-Do @snowwhite-andtheknight
Summary: Shirayuki gets Obi in the divorce, and they go off on botanical adventures.
~~~

“Delicious!” Kihal exclaimed with pleasure around the tangy-sweet bite of apple, and leaned back against the trunk, her shoulder brushing against Shirayuki’s.

“There’s more where that came from,” Obi called from above, reaching casually to the side and pulling another apple from the branch beside him. “Heads up, miss,” he called, and sent the fruit tumbling down towards her.

She grabbed the apple, shined it vigorously on her coat sleeve, and took a bite. “Thanks, Obi!”

Giving her a salute, he settled against the trunk, arms folded and head pillowed on the fine uniform jacket he had folded in a way that would definitely have given Mitsuhide a conniption. After a few minutes, she noticed that his eyes had slid shut, light snores reaching her ears. Shirayuki smiled.

“He seems comfortable,” Kihal grinned, peeling a slice of apple before offering a piece to Popo, who took it into his beak with a pleased trill. “He isn’t going to fall, is he?”

“No,” Shirayuki assured her. “He’s almost more at home in trees than on the ground.”

Thanks for tagging me, @tathrin!

This is from a story I hope to write about Legolas' homecoming, inspired by this art by @fluentisonus.

Casting his gaze around the unfamiliar landscape of his home, the elf tightened the grip on his bow, although the enemy had long since gone, leaving destruction in their wake. A heavy weight lodged in the back of his throat, choking him as though all the ashes smothering the earth around him had in turn found their way there.
He sank or crumpled or fell to his knees in front of the broad tree trunk that had once borne the branches and leaves that had always welcomed him first whenever he'd returned to the only home he'd ever known. Trembling, he brushed his fingers across the blackened, charred stump, and closed his eyes, trying to recall the memory of the ancient murmur of the tree he'd known since he was an elfling.
Nothing.
A leaf-laden branch of another, mercifully minimally charred, Mirkwood tree brushed against his shoulder, and Legolas ached, he knew not whether the movement was that of condolence or a simple trick of the wind, as the call of his homeland's trees were as muted to him as any of the others in Arda now.

I hope to write more of it soon!

Sometimes, when I'm actually attempting to properly researching for a fic I'm writing, I look over the vast array of open tabs on my laptop or phone or both, and despair.

So much clutter in the search for such specific information...

And I wonder, is there a point? Typically the things I search for figure in maybe a few sentences, or in the background, or in the general feel of the piece. And maybe, just maybe, I don't need to look up this information...

...and then I remember a story I wrote with a friend in junior high. A story where I came up with a fancy-sounding word combination to describe a character's elegant dress. I remember showing our moms to see what they thought.

And then I remember them laughing because, despite my non-researched convictions, silk-screening is, in fact, a method of printing t-shirts and not the epitome of elegance.

And I open another tab.

I'm curious about readers' interaction habits! Please pick the option for what you do typically. That's right, I'm not giving you an "other" or "see results" option; if you don't read fic then this poll isn't about you; if it depends, vote for what you do most often and clarify in the tags. And consider reblogging for a bigger sample size!

Reblogging because I'm also curious, and also to hold myself more accountable. As a writer, reviews and comments are LIFE and I love receiving them. I want to leave meaningful commentary if I can, but sometimes just letting someone that their work made your day a bit better makes their day a bit better!
