Aveline implying that Carver doesn't think about anyone other than himself is so frustrating bc nearly any time hawke interacts with the templars (esp if they're openly antagonistic to them) Carver is clearly worried for his sibling and their safety.

What Aveline said, specifically, was "I also think of others before myself. You seem tired of that" which is like. I understand the logic behind writing that (both characters share the same writer). Carver at that moment ~is~ in his bitchy resentment era about the sacrifices he's made his entire life to protect his family.

On the other hand it's ~wild~ to act as if she scored a win there against a person who 1) ~has~ made those sacrifices his entire life to protect his family whether he's fucking tired of doing so or not and who 2) had to be dragged, swinging and crying, off the battlefield because he was ready to die to protect his home. And as Carver points out 3) this is about a JOB he's volunteering to perform and not about his home life so why is it even relevant, Aveline. Like the subtext is that she's trying to accuse him of gloryhounding but like ?

Like I understand it's technically correct in how it's phrased but it's a low blow and not a fair point. imo

#I'm going to try to be very brief with my thoughts on this b/c I'll go insane trying to chop them into tag sized bites otherwise #but Carver's treatment by the game's writing is very reflective of the way teenagers are actually treated #by which I mean he is expected to show equivalent maturity to an adult while simultaneously all his grievances are written off as trivial #and invalid for no other reason than that he's a teenager. and then when this upsets him it's used as proof of his immaturity #that therefore circularly justifies this treatment! also adults are simultaneously always justified in talking down to him #because he is a ~whiny teenager~ and therefore automatically deserves this because his feelings can never be legitimate #while the adults in the conversation are never expected to. like. be the bigger man in an interaction with a fucking 19-year-old #if I can overshare for a second: there is a very large age gap between myself and my younger siblings so on a basic level I #really relate to the parentification experience Hawke implicitly has. which also means I've had the experience of replaying the game #while my youngest brother was in his late teens. which made Carver's treatment by his older sibling's friend group jump out to me a LOT #like man I would not be friends with people who talk to my much younger brother the way some of them do ngl!! #you're like in your fucking 30s Varric!! grow up!! (via @lizrich)

no you're completely right though!! carver's young, he's grieving the loss of his family and his home, he's struggling for any recognition at all that he has worth in a hostile environment that would prefer he disappear entirely, and I'm supposed to think he's immature for being angry and bitter that nobody respects him? nobody does respect him! least of all his writer!! it's very clear that he cooked up all of carver's grievances and then decided he's in the wrong for feeling some sort of way about them instead of having the bearing of a fucking saint while everyone shits on him with the lofty presumption that they understand the world more clearly than he could

One thing I've always enjoyed about Vergil is that the games make you like him and root for him as a character... but not because he's right. It's not because he's noble. It's not even because he's traumatized. It's because he's Dante's brother.

Vergil is kind of terrible. He's done a lot of terrible things. The game doesn't even try to dispute that. You are not supposed to see Vergil as a heroic figure. Yet we still root for him because Dante, our PoV character, roots for him. Dante loves his brother. He wants his brother to succeed. We see how Vergil's absence crushes Dante. He never truly gets over it.

To Dante, Vergil is the person you love even though sometimes you just can't stand them, and maybe despite the fact that they've hurt you, because they're so important to you that you can't imagine life without them. He is the person you watch destroy themselves over and over, knowing there's nothing you can do to stop it, and you feel a piece of yourself break every single time the cycle repeats. Even if we, as players, may not see that or feel that for Vergil (at least, not right away), it's clear that Dante does.

And I can't emphasize enough how relatable and human that experience is. I think we've all been there in one way or another with someone in our lives. If we haven't, then I'm sure we've all watched a friend or family member go through that with someone they've loved.

He really doesn't need to be anything grander than that. He's not secretly right or noble. In fact, he's dead wrong about a lot. Yet we're still on Vergil's side because when he overcomes, when he finds his peace, when he becomes the person Dante hoped he could be, then Dante finds peace as well.

And we all want a world where the people we love can find their peace, and we can find our peace with them.

How do I back up my blog? I lost the post that had links and such....
