at the end of the day, raven was right when she called apple selfish, but that doesnโ€™t make apple wrong in calling raven selfish, too. of course ravenโ€™s glad other people can follow their own destiny. but the reason she didnโ€™t sign because she, personally, didnโ€™t want to. it wasnโ€™t a grand rebellion, it was the terrified actions of a selfish girl. thatโ€™s okayโ€”and interesting. we donโ€™t have to treat โ€œselfishโ€ like a dirty word; it isnโ€™t a moral failing. these girls attack each other with it because the idea of putting your own wants and desires over the feelings of other people is, in their world, unforgivable. we donโ€™t need to do the same.

I think people in the replies are ignoring the fact that selfishness has layers, and that the post ISN'T saying Raven was more selfish than Apple, just that her actions come from a point of self-preservation, just like Apple's were.

Raven was put in a fight or flight situation, she was a scared teen that didn't want to DIE.

Raven indirectly started a huge rebellion against the system because SHE didn't like HER destiny, and when faced with the choice of signing or not, she chose not to sign for HERSELF. This choice inevitably lead to a whole rebellion being made, as we see in the show and books, but it wasn't Raven's intention, not at the beginning at least. She has shown regret on multiple occasions, wishing she had just ran away in private leaving the system as it was, but at the end of the day it has her empathy and seeing that other people were in a similar situation that made her step up and become a "leader" and "spokesperson" for others in a similar situation as hers.

By the definition of the word, making a choice with yourself in mind would be selfish, and that's what the post is trying to get across. Raven putting herself and her needs above others isn't bad, but it isn't completely selfless either.

Raven has shown to be selfless in COUNTLESS occasions, but reducing her to a 100% morally right, selfless martir would be a disservice to the impact her choice had and the layers she has as a character, the same way it impacts Apple by reducing her as someone 100% selfish. Taking the actions of any character in EAH and analysing them through a purely black or white lens just results in lessening the characters, their impact and their development as people inside the media.
