The story of She-ra and the Princesses of Power as told by a bunch of idiots playing D&D Support this mess on ko-fi.com/loriela

Pinned

Hey all I've set up a new ko-fi after I deleted my old one

Why did I delete my old one? don't worry about it okay

For this last year I've had difficulties with my health both physical and mental. Thankfully I've mostly fixed my physical issues, but things in the psychological front aren't as easy

I've been going to this mental health center several times a week as I work on like being able to function in society and have hope for my future and just generally taking care of myself

This unfortunately leaves very little time... and energy... and general drive to work, even on things I enjoy or hobbies or

OKAY THIS IS GETTING DEPRESSING

ANYWAYS so if you wanna help me like pay my bills and eat half decent food every once in a while, consider donating

And remember that the dollar is worth roughly 6 times more than the real, so even pocket change can make a big difference

Spectrum of overwhelm, now in triangle form due to popular demand

[Image description: A triangle chart titled, ‘Spectrum of Overwhelm.’ The three points are ‘404 Error,’ showing a person with an empty thought bubble; ‘wet beast,’ showing a person sweating and sobbing; and ‘rage beast’ showing a person clenching their fists in an outline of orange fire. The peak is the ‘404 error’ vertex, and the inside of the triangle here is coloured beige and labelled, ‘shutdown.’ The lower half is labelled ‘meltdown’ and is red on the rage beast side and blue on the wet beast side. \End description]

twitter is on its "bdsm is misogyny" discourse today, bc a terf was freaking out over nipple clamps and insisting they're "humiliating" to women.

yeah that's the fucking point, man.

gets some bitches wet, what's the problem

But its so hard when the world i— shut up! Don't borrow grief from the future. Don't borrow grief from the future. Don't borrow grief from the future. Don't borrow grief from the future. I can never leave Tumblr because after years of sporadic therapy utterly failed to even approach the core of my problem some random tumblr user was like “I processed my trauma by writing a 10,000 word work of filthy fanfic erotica” and I was like “fuck it I’ve tried everything else” and now I’m 17 chapters and 20,000 words deep into an unpublishable work of obscenity and after careful literary analysis with one of the Beloved Mutuals I have come to some Terrible Revelations about my childhood and may now continue the process of Healing. Where else am I supposed to get this kind of experience. Who does this. Why are we like this. I’m never leaving. I love y’all.

Reminds me of the time my therapist prescribed me a redemption arc and told me to enemies to lovers myself

I just generally think that if more "mental health advocates" actually experienced institutionalization at a psychiatric facility they would stop advocating for people to be put in them. Far too many of them are actively as bad as asylums "back in the day" and the ones that are better aren't THAT much better. As it turns out, robbing someone who is already going through severe mental distress of their autonomy and shoving them in a place filled with strangers who treat them as a potential threat and are constantly monitoring them is not actually conducive to mental healing.

psychiatric facilities aren't good AT ALL!

it was meant to be a cozy and embracing place to make people feel wanted and part of society no matter how bad or fucked up they are

its for people whose brain formation is already compromised at the point that it is the best they can get in life

it is NOT for a person you think is a bit crazy or anything like this, it's for high-end problems

if its just "people get here some times like a friend group uniting themselves" it can still work once or two per week, being there for an hour or two just for them to have fun and create boundaries with other people

but putting someone to live there is either cruelty or mercy, but depends a lot of the situation to be a mercy at all

I spent 12 weeks at a psychiatric hospital as an in-patient from late December 2021 til early mid March 2022 and would go back in a heartbeat

we worked through so much stuff in that time, like parts of my sexual trauma, my abandonment trauma from growing up in a severly dysfunction family, my severely repressed identity as a trans woman (i came out in a group therapy session and hyperventilated, but it was the first time i ever did it and it genuinely helped me so much)

i know tumblr has this giant kink about insisting that therapy is literally the devil, but no, it is not bad through and through

I am genuinely glad that you had a great stay at a psychiatric hospital and that it helped you. I wish your experience was true for everyone. Unfortunately it isn't.

Nowhere was I saying that therapy is the devil. It can be very helpful for many people, just as certain medications can be helpful for many people. I highly encourage you to read the stories other people have shared of their experiences in the notes. The sort of psychiatric abuse that you will find there is baked into the way that psychiatric hospitals are set up to systemically deny autonomy to the patients within them.

I am speaking directly in response to the post above mine

not every institution is automatically bad i am speaking AGAINST generalisation on a website where its users love to generalize everything

also is it important zo understand that not every institution is an american for-profit, other countries exist

have a good day

I have an interesting case of having access to both a hellish abusive prison masquerading as psychiatric help

And an honest to god mental health center where you're free to stay as long as you need and are encouraged to foster a sense of community with your fellow patients

Both within driving distance and both paid for with government money (hooray brazilian health care system)

The difference is that the first one was created because it was the assumed default of what mental health care should look like

The second one was only built after our community fought and basically harassed politicians into giving us a genuine fucking safe space

It was built for us, because we made our voices heard

Recognizing that horrible mental health institutions aren't a thing of the past is important

But it's also important to recognize that genuine care is really possible, and that we should fight for it

people really hate to see a guy love his tits and curves lmao I love being fat and curvy and having massive boobs and horny over it lolll

I would love to see a fantasy novel where the lore that the reader / protagonist learns at first is not true

e.g. they're told that this kind of creature has some kind of psychic or pheromone-based "mate bond" that cannot be broken; but it turns out that's a popular myth that has never been scientifically substantiated, and is basically used to keep people in bad relationships (basically the equivalent of "human women are biologically submissive")

"lore" is imo too often treated like information that the author is giving the reader, and it just happens to be using the medium of diagetic (that is, 'in-story') exposition.

it's so much more interesting and dynamic to treat "lore" as information that is generated and disseminated in-story. who is telling the protagonist this information? under what historical and social circumstances was this idea formed? what political motives are there for trying to get people to believe this information? which characters would disagree with it? would the protagonist believe it, or be sceptical? does the plot bear it out, or cast doubt on it?

My favourite answer to "Why did Han Solo measure the Kessel run in a unit of distance rather than time" is and will always be "Han Solo is full of shit" (regardless of what later installments might have to say).

It also works great for inquisitive minds asking questions in the style of "when you say 'no weapon forged by men can hurt you', does that include rocket launchers? Has anyone checked?"

If lore is an in universe statement, you have the full spectrum from 'politically and culturally enforced lie' to 'the loremaster is full of shit' to 'no one ever asked before' to 'holy shit, the world is so much stranger than any of us could ever guess!'

Claymore

  • We're told the monsters are shapeshifting maneaters who are just part of the world. This is a lie
  • We're told older monsters become more powerful. This is also a lie.
  • We're told that this is a low fantasy setting. This is a lie.

Actually pretty much everything we're told about the setting in the first half of Claymore is a lie.

One example I love is FFXIV

Like we start the game with the usual Light Good/Darkness Bad dichotomy

You're the Warrior of Light and that means you're the goodest good boy/girl/thing, chosen by the goddess of good and light to fight back the evil Ascians and their power of darkness

But then Shadowbringer comes along and just shatters those assumptions, showing that light and darkness are far more akin to forces of nature or laws of physics, and that assigning morality to them is kinda pointless

Honestly the way Shadowbringer recontextualizes the entire game and changes how we view the world going forward is just incredible

Also bonus points: there were already hints of these things in pre-ShB content. From ancient cities brought to ruin by the power of light, to the Dark Knight class using darkness to channel the power of love
