my friend at work today saw an empty juice box in the trash and said unprompted with no elaboration "everything reminds me of him"

The Secret History

“But how,” said Charles, who was close to tears, “how can you possibly justify cold-blooded murder?’ Henry lit a cigarette. “I prefer to think of it,” he had said, “as redistribution of matter.

The way I'm obsessed with this group, ugh!!!

andrew scott and jessica brown findlay as hamlet and ophelia rewired my brain they were just so fucking lesbian about it I think about the tragedy always. then harriet gordon-anderson and sophie wilde as actual lesbian hamlet and ophelia rewiring my brain by turning to be or not to be from a soliloquy to a monologue that ophelia can hear her say

this is admittedly a shakespeare 101 adjacent take and i think you could make this argument for a variety of shakespeare plays but hamlet to me really is one of the strongest examples of a text that is so imbued with the love that characters have for one another—a love that is ultimately entirely ineffective in doing anything to save anybody from the inevitable tragedy that unfolds. all of the types of love we see are different and complicated and often messy and hold an immense amount of weight but without sounding incredibly corny i do not think the play works without deep and explicit exploration of those dynamics. king hamlet and gertrude's love. polonius's love for his children. laertes and ophelia's love. king hamlet and hamlet's love. gertrude and hamlet's love. hamlet and ophelia's love. hamlet and horatio's love. what i find so striking about the play is how desperate everyone—yes, everyone—is to hold fast to the things they think will save them (from madness, from death, from invasion, what have you) and how even the one aspect they all share isn't enough to save anybody

i would go so far as to say that Dale and Helen not being together at the end of The Newsreader is just another reason for me to be unpatriotic personally, like, this is why don't i trust white Australians tbh they can't do anything right. top 3 reasons Australia is fucked as a nation: settler colonialism, the national liberal party, and dale and helen ambiguous newsreader ending
