Find individual character master posts below or my full OC writing masterpost on google docs. I use the tag #Shionwrites for writing and occasional art.

concussion symptoms for your fic from someone currently concussed

(disclaimer: i am concussed but mildly so llike idk research more before giving your character a brain bleed, i am not a medical professional)

  • the headache - omg the headache. my head has hurt constantly since hitting it (3? days ago?) weirdly not sticking around where i hit it, it moves a fair bit. it's wacky.
  • nausea. comes and goes. throwing up is symptom of a badd concussion, but nausea is bad. whenever i stand up too long. yay.
  • uhh
  • light headedness, again, comes and goes. room spins when i stand up.
  • confusion. i didnt really notice this but my friends say it's like im on power-saving mode. struggling to focus for more than five minutes on anything - especially screens and reading.
  • light sensitivity. especially screens. typing this on the lowest brightness possible. it's not constant, but it kicks in randomly and boy does it hurt.
  • some other small things: no sense of time passing, forgetfulness, struggling to focus, just generally seeming and feeling off

I’m reading The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann - the H.T. Lowe-Porter translation, which is overtly wordy. But it’s still enjoyable in its own way. The main character Hans Castorp seems to assume coughing a bit of blood here and there is just something that happens when you exert yourself too much, and spends the first third of the book just saying he must just be tired/anemic. But then some good lines come from the chapter The Thermometer:

“It looked, in fact, as though Hans Castorp would return home in possession of a first-class cold… He felt the onset of catarrh, with oppression in the frontal sinus, and inflamed uvula; he could not breathe easily through the passage provided by nature: the air struck cold and painfully as it struggled through, and caused constant coughing. His voice took on overnight the tonal quality of a hollow bass the worse for strong drink. According to him, he had no closed an eye, his parched throat making him start up every five minutes from his pillow.”

“You are all mistaken, my fever is the most harmless thing in the world; I simply have a cold, my eyes run, and my chest is stopped up. I have coughed half the night; it is thoroughly unpleasant of course.”

“She began to talk about how fascinating it was to cough. It was a solid satisfaction, when you felt a tickling come in your chest, deep down, and grow and grow, to reach down after it, and get at it, so to say. Sneezing was much the same thing. You kept on wanting to sneeze until you simply couldn’t stand it any longer; you looked as if you were tipsy; you drew a couple of breaths; then out it came, and you forgot everything else in the bliss of the sensation. Sometimes the explosion repeated itself two or three times. That was the sort of pleasure life gave you free of charge.”

I particularly liked reference to a thermometer as a “glass cigar” and detailing all the ways the men go about their business with it clamped between their lips for seven minutes to get the proper reading.

my professor today was being so hot I could not listen to anything he had to say omfg.

he started class with a disclaimer on how bad he sounded and how allergies were kicking his ass.

he sneezed like 11 times in the two hours I was there and omfg. I could not sit still because I could see how red his nose was and he was sniffling like a maniac, and everytime he sneezed he would pause for a decent amount of time before and held up a finger, keeping everyone waiting on his sneezes?

this sounds like its made up but istg. he's always been a bit extra and dramatic, but dear fucking God. ufegyidwbfhehfyg2efgyu I'm going insane because help. he was literally asking the ta to bring him tissues throughout.

I'm not super into allergies but consider: A person who is so embarrassed about having terrible allergies that they'd rather lie and say they have a cold. Like having it backfire and have to rest and pretend to be sick, and then the partner is all worried when they're making no improvement. Or let's say they're allergic to their partner's pet, but the partner insists they stay at their place so they can take care of them. So they have to stay in that environment all night...

"I'm used to it"

"don't look at me like that," they said. with any luck, the shadows of the alcove would hide their face, the carved pillars of the palace corridor swallowing the lamplight. "I'm used to it."

"you don't look used to it."

"I'll be better later. just need to make it to lights-out and then I'll be able to wear my brace again."

the joint at the base of their thumb ached sharply, a visible catch and pop of inflamed tendons beneath the skin as they tested it once more. the muscles had started to waste at the wrist from disuse, the pain echoing up and down the side of their arm. each salute, each carefully-gauged lift of their sword to hold a position before the nobles passing by, they had gritted their teeth and prayed wordlessly that their grip wouldn't give way altogether.

"you should tell someone." their friend's voice was hushed, worried.

"who?" their throat was thick suddenly. "who'd want a guard who can't hold a sword anymore?"

"I - I don't think - maybe if you rest, if you keep wearing your brace, then - "

"what do you think I've been doing." slowly, carefully, they began to fit their dress glove back over their hand, clenching their teeth to avoid the angles that hurt the most. "how long till closing ceremonies?"

"it's half-past ten now."

"good. can you - find me at the hour, again?"

their friend sighed, eyes distant.

"sure."

The cold rain wouldn't stop him, he knew what he had to do. He had to try and get back to the safe house even if it would be the last thing he'd do. Which probably would be if any of the infected managed to get a glimpse of him. Luckily he knew the route by heart.

Just a little further, then he'd be able to rest.
