📑📚 ACE YOUR EXAMS 📚📑

This is a guide for people who have exams coming up. It consists of what to do if you want 100% on your upcoming exams, study tips, and more!

Study tips:

  • Check this masterlist by @merakinotes and also this post+ masterlist by @areistotle it has everything you’ll ever need.
  • Bank of questions / past papers study method: you can create your own questions on Quizlet or any online quiz maker or use past papers/ revision resources.
  • Study everyday. If your exam is even a month away, that’s good because it means you don’t have to study hours everyday, but you can at least keep a goal to study 30 mins a day or to learn/ understand/ memorise a new thing part of that topic every day.
  • Feynman technique. Basically pretend as if you’re the teacher and teach the topic to someone/ something (ex a stuffed animal)
  • Record yourself talking. When you’re revising, record yourself talking about some of the stuff so you can listen to it later when you’re unable to study.
  • Visual learning!! Personally, I love this one. If you’re studying something like science, history, etc, then draw pictures! Draw pictures to better help you understand a word/ concept. (Example: in science I couldn’t remember the whole definition of combustion so I just drew a stickman image of the atom and the oxygen and then those 2 chemically combined)

During the exam:

  • Never turn the exam in early!! Are you finished? Then re read the exam and re take the exam. Double check, triple check etc your answers. Keep looking through your answers again and again, step by step. Only give the test in at the very end.
  • Watch the clock! Don’t spend lots of time on one question trying to figure it out. Look at the time and make sure you still have enough to complete all the questions and maybe also recheck them.
  • If you don’t completely understand a question/ it’s more complicated: skip it and go to the next question. Come back to that harder question later.

Manifesting:

Remember: the 100/100 grade is already yours. You just need to claim it!
Affirmations: you can create your own set of customised affirmations or you can use THIS affirmation list that I made for high grades
Subliminal: I’ve made a playlist on YouTube with all my favourite academic subliminals. You can also search up 100/100 grades or full marks in tests subliminals.

More resources:

(These are just to further help you if these tips do not help. Remember that watching videos or reading about studying/ study tips is not studying. It’s procrastinating. Consume these in moderation.)

study methods

the second brain method

this method focuses on organizing the information you learn to maximize effectiveness. a common way of doing this is through the CODE method:

capture - be quick and efficient in how you receive the information

organize - organize the information in a way that works for you

distill - break the information down to its key elements

express - apply the information you’ve learned

* there is a ton of information out there about this method. if you struggle with burnout and knowing where to start, i recommend researching this method further to figure out what works for you.

the pomodoro method

the pomodoro method is a time management method. the most common expression of this method is to pick a task, work for 25 minutes on that task, then take a break for 5 minutes. then, repeat. if you’re planning to work all day, you may up the time spent studying. for example, after a while of this, you may work for 30 minutes at a time, then 40, then 45, and so forth. this method is particularly good for when you’re feeling unmotivated or having a hard time focusing. if you’re still not feeling it after a while, you may start to take longer breaks. for example, you may study for 30 minutes, break for 15, and keep going like that.

the 5 minute rule method

this method is good for when you have to do a shorter task, but you’re procrastinating doing it. this method requires you to dedicate only 5 minutes to do your task. after that, you may stop, but chances are, once you’ve started, finishing won’t be as difficult.

the blurting method

this method is particularly good for revision. the blurting method requires you to read over the content you are learning, then put it away and write down everything you know or can remember. then, check the content and revise everything you didn’t write down.

spaced repetition

spaced repetition requires you to spread out your study reviews over the period of a few days. this has been shown to improve memory. rather than studying one thing at a time, then studying something else the next day and so on, review the information right after you’ve learned it, then recall it after a few hours, then a few days, then a few weeks, and so on. if you’re studying something you will need to remember for an extended period of time, this method would be perfect for you!

active recall

this is my absolute favorite method! it’s been shown to improve your studying immensely and so many people have benefited from practicing active recall. active recall involves retrieving information from your brain, usually done through questions. a good way to do this is to explain the concept to yourself, to someone else, or act like you’re doing a presentation on the subject. after you’ve recalled all of the information you know about the subject, go over your material again and be sure you covered everything and explained everything the best way you could. if you didn’t, review everything you did not remember or got wrong, and go again. do this until you get everything. doing this can also be referred to as the feynman technique.

the SQ3r method

survey - skim your text and identify bolded text, headers, images, etc.

question - generate questions about the text based on what you surveyed. what are the key concepts in this text? what is each paragraph about? what information do i need to take away from this text?

read - read through the entire text and answer the questions you created

recite - summarize what you learned in your own words

review - recall the key concepts and answers to your questions

Mastering Complexity: A Guide To The Feynman Technique

The Feynman Technique is a unique approach to learning and understanding complex subjects. The main idea behind the Feynman Technique is to break down complex concepts into simpler terms, making it easier to understand and retain the information. The process of breaking down complex ideas into simple explanations also helps to identify areas where one’s understanding is limited, which can then be addressed through further study and research.

The technique is based on the concept of “active learning,” where students are engaged in the process of understanding rather than just passively absorbing information. By explaining complex concepts to someone else, students are forced to think critically about the information and consider how to articulate it in a way that is easy to understand.

The Feynman Technique consists of four straightforward steps:

  1. Choose a Concept:

Choose a concept or idea that you want to understand.

  1. Teach a Toddler:

Imagine that you are teaching the concept to someone else, such as a toddler, friend, family member, or even an imaginary person.

  1. Identify knowledge gaps:

Identify the areas where you struggle to explain the concept.

  1. Simplifying the explanation:

Review the teaching material again and simplify the explanation of the concept, using everyday language and examples that anyone can understand.

By breaking down complex ideas into simple explanations, you can gain a deeper understanding of the concept and identify areas where you need to improve. The Feynman Technique is especially helpful for students studying science, mathematics, engineering, or any other subject where complex concepts are involved.

One of the key advantages of the Feynman Technique is that it helps you identify gaps in your understanding. When you find it difficult to explain a concept simply, it means you need to spend more time studying and researching that area.

Additionally, by explaining the concept to someone else, you are engaging in active learning, which has been shown to be more effective than passive learning methods, such as reading or watching videos.

Another benefit of the Feynman Technique is that it helps students develop clear and effective communication skills. By being able to explain complex ideas in simple terms, you can improve your ability to articulate your thoughts and ideas. This can be incredibly valuable in both academic and professional settings.

In conclusion, the Feynman Technique is a highly effective tool for students to enhance their understanding of complex subjects and ideas. By breaking down concepts into simple explanations and identifying areas where they need to improve, students can become more effective learners and communicators. So, next time you encounter a challenging concept, give the Feynman Technique a try and see how it can help you improve your understanding!

how to study effectively. ᥫ᭡

sometimes we get caught up in trying to memorize all the material rather than study and learn the material. we also may come to realize that the way we currently “study” isn’t actually studying at all. i’ve fallen into this way of studying, but i’ve learned some really helpful tips and tricks to make sure that i actually learn and understand the material and get it to stick rather than memorize it just to forget everything later.

let’s begin …

୨ৎ — incorporate study methods

there’s a variety of different study methods that have been proven to truly help students learn the material and have productive study sessions.

The Feynman Technique!

This approach not only helps you understand complex topics but ensures you can explain them with crystal-clear clarity!

Here's your guide to mastering the Feynman Technique:

1. Choose a Topic: Select the subject you want to learn. Whether it's a tricky concept from class or a new skill, pinpoint your focus.

2. Teach it Simply: Pretend you're teaching the chosen topic to someone unfamiliar with it. Break down complex ideas into simpler terms, using everyday language. This step forces you to truly grasp the material.

3. Identify Gaps: As you explain, pay attention to any areas where your understanding falters. These gaps highlight the parts of the subject that need more attention and study.

4. Go Back to the Source: Revisit your study materials and fill in the gaps in your understanding. Whether it's a textbook, lecture notes, or online resources, reinforce your knowledge.

5. Repeat and Refine: Practice the teaching process multiple times. Each iteration refines your explanation, making it clearer and more concise. This repetition solidifies your understanding.

The Feynman Technique's brilliance lies in its simplicity. By distilling complex information into easy-to-understand terms, you not only grasp the material but also gain the ability to communicate it effortlessly.

Ever tried the Feynman Technique? How did it work for you? Share your thoughts and tips in the comments! 💗

dealing with study burnout

it’s that moment when the textbooks, notes, and exams start to feel overwhelming. what can you do to avoid study burnout?

take regular breaks -> follow the pomodoro technique or take short breaks every 45-60 minutes.

set realistic goals -> break your study sessions into smaller, manageable tasks.

instead of cramming an entire chapter in one sitting, focus on mastering one section at a time.

mix up your study routine -> alternate between reading, writing, watching videos, or using flashcards.

practice self-care -> get enough sleep, stay hydrated (~72 oz), and eat nourishing foods. incorporate exercise, whether it's a quick walk, or a gym session.

know when to step back -> taking a break occasionally will help you return to your studies feeling refreshed and ready to focus.

practice mindfulness -> try practicing meditation to calm your mind. even a 5-minute session can help you reset mentally and emotionally.

headspace - a great guided meditation app, the only con is the pricing

here are some good free alternatives tho:

  • insight timer
  • runner
  • medito

connect with others -> even a quick chat about how you’re feeling can make a huge difference in your mood and motivation.

celebrate small wins -> don’t wait until you’ve finished a whole subject to feel accomplished.

celebrate the small victories—whether it’s finishing a section, acing a practice quiz, or just sticking to your study plan for the day.

adjust your expectations -> if things don’t go exactly to plan, don’t beat yourself up. adjust your expectations and keep moving forward.

take time to unplug -> unplugging for a few hours can give you a much-needed mental break.

I can guarantee that less social media makes my mood better, not just for studying but for social interactions. try making a dedicated time of the day where you step away from screens!!

how to effectively review your notes after class

reviewing your notes shortly after class can greatly improve retention and understanding. here are something that i do!

why review your notes?

forgetting curve -> a phenomenon where our brains tend to forget information rapidly if we don’t revisit it.

by reviewing your notes within 24 hours, you strengthen neural connections and solidify the material in your long-term memory.

˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · ˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧

effective strategies for reviewing your notes

1. active review

  • summarize the material -> after class, write a brief summary of the key points in your own words.
  • ask yourself questions -> turn headings or bullet points into questions and see if you can answer them without looking at your notes.
  • teach someone else -> explaining the material to someone else can reinforce your understanding and identify gaps in your knowledge.

2. organizing your notes

  • highlight key concepts -> use different colors or underlining to emphasize important points, formulas, or definitions.
  • add examples -> include real-world examples next to complex ideas to make them more relatable and easier to remember.
  • create summaries or concept maps -> condense lengthy notes into diagrams, charts, or mind maps to visualize relationships between topics.

3. spaced repetition

  • review within 24 hours -> go over your notes right after class to reinforce initial learning.
  • space subsequent review -> revisit the material after a few days, then again after a week.
  • use flashcards or apps -> tools like anki or quizlet can help with spaced repetition by showing you content at optimal intervals.

˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · ˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧

how to keep your notes engaging

  • make it visual -> use diagrams, doodles, or flowcharts to break up text-heavy notes and make reviewing more interactive.
  • incorporate mnemonics -> create acronyms, rhymes, or mental images to help remember lists or difficult concepts.
if you want to go beyond... what i do is take my notes digitally during class (or before if the lecture is posted online) and after the lesson rewrite everything in my notebook. by rewriting everything, i review the lesson :)

📚🖊️🇨🇳

this morning i asked my mom to grab me some character practice sheets at the chinese supermarket. a sweet lady who was there to buy notebooks for her kid instructed my mom on what to buy :) so as a result i got writing practice notebooks for elementary school children (for all subjects including math and english too), a couple fine gel pens she liked, and a cute pink student's calligraphy brush too!

it was a very sweet interaction, but i'm also pretty sure my mom didn't clarify that i am her adult child and not an elementary school age "learning to write for the first time" kid, and that's how i ended up with children's math and english notebooks as well haha

productivity apps for self improvement

pinterest

you know i had to include the ultimate form of social media. pinterest is one of the only truly peaceful social media apps out there and focuses on sharing photos to your themed boards. this app is everything if you’re into making vision boards, moodboards, beauty, productivity, and really anything else. there’s something there for everyone!

finch

this is a wonderful self-care app, in which you take care of a bird while taking care of yourself! this is my new favorite app. i use the free version and it is adorable. the app asks you some questions about your goals and how you feel about self care, and gives you some daily goals based on your answers, but you can delete and add goals of your own. the more you log in and track your goals, the more adventures your bird can go on and the more they grow. i recommend this app to absolutely everyone and i will never shut up about it.

gymshark training

this is a free training app including many different types and styles of workouts. you can search for workouts based on duration, equipment used, the targeted muscle, and so on. you can also add workouts and plans of your own and track your progress.

i am sober

this is my favorite app for if you have something you want to quit. this isn’t just for substances or alcohol, but can also be used for quitting sugar, skin picking, caffeine, fast food, and so many other things. you can track your progress, review your days, make pledges, and connect with others who are struggling with the same thing you are. you are also given motivational quotes and reminders when you log into the app. there is an option for a subscription, but i use the free version and have had no problems with it at all.

study bunny: focus timer

an adorable focus timer where you gain coins with every goal/time you accomplish something with your focus timer and you can spend your coins on cute little accessories for your bunny! the only real issue with this app is that the ads are kind of crazy, and it’s $15 a month to go ad-free.

flora - green focus

this app includes a pomodoro timer and plants a tree in a rural community based on how often you stay focused using the timer on the app. the app does not plant a tree unless you opt for their subscription, which is $2 per year and allows you to plant one tree for 120 hours of focused time. you can also plant a tree every 24 hours with the $10 plan.

focus to-do: focus timer&tasks

this app combines a pomodoro timer with a daily to-do list. the app is free to use, but includes additional features for those with a subscription, which is $3 for every three months or $9 for a lifetime membership.

balance: meditation & sleep

a great app that includes nightly reviews, meditations, and sleep sounds. this app has great reviews, but it’s worth noting that it’s not completely free. it includes a trial, after which is $12 per month, or $70 per year.

insight timer - meditate & sleep

just as it sounds, this is another great app for meditations, ambient sounds for sleep, and progress tracking. there are tons of free things included in the app, but if you want to unlock everything, the premium plan is $10 per month or $60 per year.

structured - daily planner

an app with great reviews intended to help organize your daily tasks into achievable goals and track your progress. the app has basic features for free, but also includes a premium subscription if you want to unlock all the features.

routineflow: guided routines

this app caters to those who have difficulties staying focused and maintaining a set routine by guiding your routine for you and managing your progress. the app gives you one routine for free, but if you want another, you would need to pay for the $30 annual subscription.

how we feel

a wonderful free journaling app developed by therapists and scientists for logging your emotions, talking to other users, and tracking your mood patterns.

gentler streak fitness tracker

if you’re tired of the constant work and grind mentality, this may be the app for you. this app takes a gentler approach to fitness by tracking exercise, giving encouragement, and notifying you if you are overworking yourself. the app itself is free, but certain features require a subscription, which is $8 per month or $50 per year.

glo | yoga and meditation app

glo is a highly rated app for yoga, pilates, and meditation. unlike most of the other apps listed, you can’t really access much on glo for free. to access the full courses, they offer two plans: $30 per month or $245 per year.

waterllama

another adorable app that lets you track your water intake with a cute llama! super motivating and is free for basic features. if you want to unlock all features, the subscription is $7 per year.

mindllama

made by the same people as waterllama, this app allows you to practice and track your meditation and breathwork practice with a cute llama! like waterllama, the app is free, but some features require a subscription, which varies depending on whether you want the premium plan, the anxiety relief plan, or the sleep focused plan.

daily bean - simplest journal

another super cute app that helps you track your days and moods. the app itself is free, but a premium plan is also offered, which is $20 per year.

schmoody: mood & habit tracker

this app aims to help you through depression, anxiety, and/or adhd by helping you track your habits, talk to other users, and give you the resources to get you back on track. the free version includes the “essentials” to support mental health and well-being, but they also offer a premium version, which unlocks more resources and personalized options. the subscription is $15 per month, $60 per year, or $100 for a lifetime membership.

meditation timer - zenitizer

this is a meditation timer that focuses on simplicity and organization while tracking your meditation practice. a free version is available with a limited amount of content, but a premium version is also offered, which is $3 per month, $20 per year, or a $50 one-time payment.

mineral - gratitude journal

this is a free journaling app that is secure in the fact that you have to use face id in order to access your journal. this app is definitely more simple, but effective nonetheless.

focus keeper: productive timer

this app is a popular pomodoro-style timer app. i’ve heard that this app works wonders for many people with adhd. the app is free, but includes additional content and features for those with a subscription.

recently, i went to visit a friend in nevada and had a great time exploring cafés, bookstores, and vintage shops !! i fell in love with this portable royal typewriter with dark green keys but wasn't able to take it home with me :'((

🍵 week 2 and 3 recap

  • i visited the university that i'll be transferring to next year! i'm so excited to attend 🥹
  • i completed a writing assignment for my macroeconomics class and so much of it was just word vomit because i have no idea what i'm doing 😵‍💫 it's a little embarrassing coming to class and being absolutely lost during the discussions. it seems like everyone else has picked up on the content really quickly except for me! economics has always been one of my weaker subjects, so i really need to get it in my head that i won't be able to just breeze through this class huhuhu. i'm not excited to see my grade for that writing assignment but i'm determined to do better next time.
  • my other classes have been okay! i'm taking both business stats and accounting completely online, but they've been surprisingly pretty easy. i used to struggle with online classes a lot, but the content for these classes in particular are structured for active recall rather than just reading which is great for me! i find most of the content pretty interesting too, so i don't get bored studying.
  • i've been enjoying earl grey tea recently 🍵
  • super excited for itzy's comeback!

🎯 goals for week 4

  1. arrive to class prepared — read and study the chapter prior to class
  2. manage my time well — start writing assignments on MONDAY, and work on it throughout the week.
  3. maintain a clean learning environment — take at least 30 minutes each day to clean my room and desk
  4. seek help — go to tutoring on thursday and/or friday

goodnight everyone ! 🌚

math study techniques

i’m going to break down some of the most effective ways to study math. this subject definitely can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategies, you can build confidence and success.

this is how i got consistent As on my tests!

mistakes are valuable

  • go over your mistakes and learn from them – don't move on without fully understanding why something went wrong.
  • keep an error log – reviewing common errors helps you avoid them in the future.

ngl, sometimes i get disappointed when i don't make mistakes cuz then i don't have a reference point for studying 😭

use visual aids

  • in geometry or algebra, draw diagrams to visualize the problems.

i am a heavy visual learner so if I can, I will draw out every graph and shape.

here is a simple example of visual notes in math that i took a while ago

  • use graphing tools to understand functions or inequalities in a tangible way.
