Sky Cowboys

@skycowboys / skycowboys.tumblr.com

An alternate Earth where all horses are winged. What are their species? How are they used in society? How was the world changed as a result? Let the worldbuilding begin!

I'm new to your work (Love it SO much as an owner of both horses and birds), but have to ask, have you ever done Australian birds? Like the Rainbow Lorikeet, Eastern Rosella, or Kingfisher? Or any others.

I'd be interested to see how the weird and bright colours of Australian birds would fit into your world.

Hello!

So glad you found this blog :)

I do have some kingfishers (though the art is pretty old) -

But I don't have many parrot/lorikeet/parikeet pegasi. I tried them at the start of this project, but didn't really figure out how I like to mix horse hair and plumage colors until recently. I think a set of super colorful bird inspired pegasi are overdue!

Are the "prehistoric pegasi" concepts in your art book, by any chance? I definitely intend to buy a copy, but I just can't wait to hunt through the pages myself!

Hello!

There isn't any prehistoric lore in this volume, but I plan to add some to volume 2 after the comic is wrapped up :) The comic will launch this summer.

I've gotta ask... have you ever made a potoo-inspired pegasus?

Avatar

I HAVE INDEEEEEED. He's non-canon and he is a little outdated, so I think our meme boy needs some new art soon!

Hey I know you've done a penguin pegasi before, as well several water fowl and sea birds. My question is are the ones based off of aquatic birds able to dive and swim like birds or horses? Or alternatively do they swim similarly to a moose would, just with added wings? This is just a fun brain teaser question, I love your art and can't wait to see more. <3

Hello!

Yeah so longwing pegasi do dive for fish and seaweed :) I picture them more like gannets jetting into the water, then they sort of "fly" through the water + paddle with their legs around under the surface. Granted, I haven't built in an under-water features into longwings like closing nostrils or transparent eyelids...so diving into the water can be risky for longwings. Longwing dives tend to be slower than gannet dives for that reason.

Thank you :) My new job has thrown my schedule for a loop but I hope to get back to posting regularly again soon!

Question: what do prehistoric pegasi look like? I imagine they'd have traits of both prehistoric horses and prehistoric birds/dinosaurs, which would look sick as hell.

Avatar

Hi there!

So prehistoric horses and pegasi wouldn't really overlap in the SC world since pegasi "evolved" after horses were fully evolved, but I do have a couple of "prehistoric style" pegasi for funsies (though they aren't SC canon) :)

Archaeopteryx themed pegasus-

The quagga-dodo -

And of course the theropod pegasus lol

~ Larn

Sticker options! Since I can't get them ALL made, which are the ones you'd want to see made? They'll be approximately 2.5x2.5 inches (6cmx6cm)

Lemme know in replies/dms/tags/reblogs!

Do you think pegasus can taste capsaicin?

Avatar

Horses can taste capsaicin...but bird cannot. What an amazing ask XD

I think that yes, pegasi can taste capsaicin, since their mouths are structured like horse mouths aside from the beak. Inside, they have gums and a horse tongue and molars. Capsaicin would also function on the skin like it does for horses, creating a feeling of heat or irritation.

you're telling me cowboys on flying horses are too good to have hats with stampede strings

Avatar

LOL most flying cowboys don't let their pride get in the way of a good stampede string.

Scrubs, tho. Scrubs is too proud XD He can't even wear a hat string on the ground.

So it's shedding season and my horse's red markings are starting to shed out in weird ways. That shape that looks like it was clipped or rubbed off is approximately the shape of his tiger-striping above the hock XD

And I think it's an odd color shed because each time I see him lose hair (which is a lot, he's Mr.FightClub), the area underneath is lighter or black. Not red. I wonder if the rest of his red will shed out like this.

Very odd lol

Heya!! Just got to sift through the artbook as it arrived a few days ago and i am absolutely IN LOVE with the art, blown away by the concepts and character art– all of it is fantastic and delicious food for the noggin, esp as an artist myself, and a horse + wild west enjoyer. ^v^)o In essence: 10/10, yall outdid yourselves!

I also had some questions, if it's okay, (no pressure or anything)– but I was interested in maybe making a character for the world (if we can do that sort of thing); and I am absolutely enraptured and fascinated by the concept of “Boltslayers”, and I love, love, love the Lightning fish. (Big monster/creature design enthusiast so i adore them snbgdhjndgh)

  • 1: are there any kind of specific pegasi that Boltslayer pilots would use/ride for that sort of thing? Or is it up to the pilots discretion/preference? (i.e: if longwings would be preferred for speed and maneuverability for example!)
  • 2: I'm also super curious if Boltslayers hunt Lightning fish to keep their populations in check, and/or if it's like an actual career (as actual big-game hunting), or if it's more or less a ‘’hobby’’ for some, as a way to get some extra coin or whathaveyou. 🤔

Anyway yeah that sums my thoughts up haha XD apologies for the yapping. Might check out the discord server at some point! Can't wait to devour more of your amazing art in the future. Best wishes!! ~ NEO 💜

Hello!

I'm so glad you received your book <3 And I'm so glad you like it! I put a lot of time into it and it's fun to see it resonate with people :)

Heck yeahhh! Boltslayers are fun! One of the characters in the upcoming comic is a boltslayer. Here's a sneak peek of her -

  1. Yes! Broadwings, certainly. Within that class, there are a few breeds that do exceptionally well like firefoot and deepwood broadwings (Sniper above and Semrah below are both deepwood broadwings).

These broadwings have extreme tenacity and focus. Just as important is the bond between pilot and pegasus. Both have to 100000% trust each other with zero doubts because when you're hunting lightning fish, doubt means death. Any pegasus that has those qualities can be used in a hunt.

2. Boltslayers most often hunt lightning fish as a job. The payday for felling a LF can be massive and can be residual as long as the LF is being harvested. Boltslayers work with trusted merchants who manage the harvesting after the LF is down, and collect the boltslayer's cut of the materials sold over time. So boltslayers don't have to hunt very often.

There are some who hunt for sport, but the majority of boltslayers see the sport hunters as posers and will avoid them. To a *real* boltslayer, pitting yourself against a LF will result in a death: you or the LF. Risking your life for sport is seen as stupid and disrespectful to the LF, who will throw everything it has at you. Why waste a whole LF for your own glory? Even if the LF is harvested, a sport kill is seen as cheap and distasteful. If you're a sport hunter, good luck trying to find a team that'll hunt with you.

That said, all boltslayers are crazy daredevils in some respect. Hunting LF is incredibly dangerous and difficult. It takes a certain kind of person to master it. Boltslayers like to spend time at Fen's Ascension and practice their skills in "mock hunts", where you're really just playing chicken with young LF and don't actually engage in a hunt to kill. This can be done alone, where as real hunts are done in teams.

I hope that answers your questions! We'll all be happy to see you in the Discord if you choose to join :)

For anyone new seeing this aaaaask:

Hi, not sure if I sent this already (sorry if I did) but since your setting has fantasy creatures, would you consider adding the humble jackalope?

Avatar

Hi there!

I hadn't considered jackalopes to be a canon creature, but it seems kinda fun! Like...they're just usual mundane creatures for the SC world. Just lil hares with antlers. The young ones would have little nubbins!

Yeah I like that idea.
