something deeply stupid about the tiktok popular dark romance books that i have come across is that apart from the heteronormativity is that they don't even commit to the bit. the dark stuff is always coming from the men and there is always some fucking catch with them. like imagine if in hannibal halfway through they were like ""sure he kills people and eats them... but he also saves puppies!! so actually you have to like him now!!!" completely delusional. and the darkness in these things is so god damn banal too. like the reason why people (me included) think many of these romanticise abuse is that the end goal for these characters is always becoming a "happy" couple. characters in these books will lie and assault and abuse themselves into married with kids. hello??? again, hannibal did it right. codependent abuse gaslighting obsession spiral ending in a cinematic mutual murdersuicide >>>>>> starting with abuse and ending up getting married with kids. know your genre.
