Steph | she/her | Canada Professional Insomniac Ask and tag game friendly

Writeblr Reintro

Now that I am free from tumblr purgatory, and actually have some free time, I figured I may as well reintroduce myself!

I'm Steph, legal adult and she/they queer living in the mildest climate in Canada. I write pretty much exclusively sci-fi and fantasy, and I fill my casts of characters out with mostly ladies because I am really tired of hearing about dudes! I have five main WIPs I'm rotating around in my mind at any given moment:

The Silent Island of Crow intro post A forum RP currently being reworked into book formatting, it's about a bunch of weirdos getting up to shenanigans and dealing with threats from their pasts and elsewhere. Started really juvenile and grew to be more serious in tone, jarringly so, but there's still some interesting kernels in there...

The Island of Crows intro post ...So my best friend and I are taking those kernels and making something that's a little more consistent and in line with where our writing skills are now! Currently in the planning stages, but the core of it will remain the same: A bunch of weirdos getting up to shenanigans on an island they've all been pulled to for one reason or another.

The Starcrossed Cycle intro post The solo adventures of some of the characters I am going to be bringing to the Island of Crows, before they actually get there. Iradurel is a criminal frozen in time, and Ryla is the monster hunter that finds and frees her. The two of them will come to realize that this is not the first time they've been pulled into each other's orbits.

Abyssal Scrutiny intro post Look, I saw Power Rangers at a formative age, so super sentai shit is always at the back of my mind! So this is my take on the genre, where a group of people are granted powers from a mysterious source, in order to fight against eldritch abominations in some sort of parallel realm. Only, as Morgan uncovers, there is more going on than just fighting monsters of the day.

The Moons of Boryarlta intro post This started life with the intent of being a lesbian rewrite of a mecha anime, but has spiralled into an unholy hodgepodge of sci-fi genre nonsense. Stuck in a dead end job just trying to make rent, Cass didn't think she'd ever have the chance to leave her hometown, let alone her planet. But then she's captured and thrown into a gladiator arena on another world, and her life just gets weirder from there.

Beyond those, I have a couple random ideas that are percolating, so I may have more to add in the future. But for on here, I am always down for tag games (lol just late to respond to them!), love to hear about all the weird shit that people are writing about outside of the traditional publishing scene, and reblog a lot of images and words that remind me of my WIPs (I try to keep my tagging system organized). Gimme a follow if any of that sounds like your cup of tea!

when character a is barely conscious and being princess carried by character b and when b goes to put them down a whimpers and fists their hand into the fabric of their shirt and b goes shhh shh shh and takes their hand in theirs while gently cradling their head oughhhhhh oughhhhh………….

⚙️, 🤐, 🎃, 📢, and 🥪 for the Fantasy Worldbuilding Ask Game?

Avatar

Thank for the ask!! Took me approximately a million years to actually sit down and work on it... I'll be answering for The Last Lorinean

⚙️How has magic influenced the level and complexity of technology in your WIP?

Honestly, non-magical technology has not progressed very far, even as the strength of magic has faded in the current age. Most technological developments have magic involved in some way. The most advanced non-magical technology can be found in the port cities of Astaire, where magic users are a rarity and those born with magic are persecuted and suppressed. They are on the brink of an industrial revolution, but their population size and relation to the rest of the magical world will likely keep them from tipping in that direction.

🧐Do people research magic in your WIP? What’s the most popular or prestigious topic of study? The least popular?

Researching magic is a bit passé in the current age—the powerhouses of magical research are found at the Faerien in Kyrania (an academy for training magically proficient faeries to serve the Kyranian priesthood and royal family) and in the city of Pirten in Doel'Dan (one of the two cities in a largely undeveloped country that has become the sanctuary for a lot of exiles).

The Faerien focuses on developing new magic through linguistical exploration (magic is understood to be initially drawn upon by an audible invocation, and careful learning allows one to replicate the feeling of the invocation without speaking), as well as training their students to cast wordlessly as quickly as possible.

In the previous age, magical research was done by the Covens in Astaire. They established a citadel of knowledge, split into five individual covens that studied their preferred schools of magic. The members of the covens were known as witches. The Lorineans specialized in the preservation of magical knowledge, the Simplinds specialized in the creation of and search for magical relics, the Elethides specialized in spell creation, the Canysthems specialized in alchemy and other miscellaneous minor studies, and the Reglares focused on magical theory.

A war began between the covens when the Reglares challenged the ethics of an Elethide witch specializing in the study of necromancy and immortality. This war spanned generations and ended with the continent of Astaire being stripped of its magic via a relic.

🎃Can otherworldly entities grant people special powers? When do they choose to do so?

Otherworldly entities cannot grant special powers; the only exception is that of the elves and their gods, the Eternals. Long ago, the Eternals taught an order of elves the secret of immortality. It did not make the elven people immortal, but it did give them the knowledge of how to grant immortality to individual beings. Those trained in the magic of immortality guard the secret with their lives, and only bestow immortality onto heroes they deem deserving.

📢Are there any particularly influential religious institutions in your WIP?

Aertha largely subscribes to folk religions with very little organized practice aside from holidays. The most influential religious organization would be that of the Kyranian priesthood. Their gods, the Inklaen, speak through the priesthood in order to determine the divine right to rule, among other things. Historically, this meant that the reigning royal family would change every few generations, if not every generation, as the gods deemed someone else more worthy of rule. However, the current royal family has not left the throne in centuries.

🥪What kind of unique and/or popular foods exist in your WIP? Magical foods?

Honestly, I have not done much thinking about foods in Aertha, let alone magical foods. I know that tea is a huge cultural focus on Aronia, and I have done some thinking about street food in Aronia's capitol of Puradasis.

15, 10, 13, 6, and 4 for the Edgy/misc OC ask meme?

Avatar

Thank you for the ask :) Going to answer these for Sciosa!

Does your OC have a faceclaim? If so, who?

alien.hanna on ig has been the closest to how I envision Sciosa. Though with a more rounder face

What's an AU that would be interesting to explore with your OC?

I think one where she either wasn't her father's only heir and was a lesser royal who was more free to go and do as she wished would be fun, or one where she was still the crown princess but her future reign wasn't so challenged and actually welcomed. Had the lords of Ivaenia not plotted and schemed her downfall since it became clear Ilyos was not going to marry and fully intended her to reign after him, I believe she would've been a brilliant queen, even given the on coming wars.

If you met your OC, would the two of you get along?

hmmm I would think so? I don't think we'd be quick friends but I don't think we would be at odds either.

How easily could your OC be convinced to do something that goes against their moral compass?

Book 1 Sciosa? extremely hard late book 2 and on? becomes a lot easier in the fact her moral compass starts to shift as shit starts to go south for her.

When scared, does your OC fight, flee, freeze or fawn?

Fight, oh dear lord fight. but tbh? as a freezer myself - good for her

it sucks so bad that 'lightning magic' in every media is just some pathetic little strands of electricity. i wanna see some LIGHTNING. show me a magic setting where lightning magic lights up a room like the sun, and the bolt is only visible as an afterimage burned into your vision. I wanna see someone cast lightning and have the thunder rattling the room and shaking everyone to their core. i want lightning magic to be a split second blast of so much power it leaves everyone's senses reeling. c'mon guys don't you know what real lightning looks like? we can be doing so much better than this.

I agree with this but I'm always far more upset when plant magic is incredibly weak or used exclusively for healing. Like... Have you ever seen what a tree can do to a rock? What plants over the course of a millennium can do to an area? Or what some plants can do when they grow on a living thing? Now imagine you could do all those things in an instant, anywhere you wanted. Imaging growing an oak tree in someone's chest. Imagine growing new trees that are very resistant to fire suddenly to block an enemy spell. Imagine filling the air with pollen so thick it causes the enemy forces to suffocate. Plant magic should be the scariest magic in any setting and instead it appears gets limited to "oh, I can't hurt anyone. I must defend and heal those I care about." No. Rip off that guy's limbs with strangle vines before he even gets a chance to attack your friends.

🚫, 🏙️, 🪙, 🙅, and 🦁 for the Fantasy Worldbuilding Ask Game?

Avatar

Hejj! Thank you for the ask! I'll answer it with the world from my wip Phei of the Wind~!

🚫What CAN’T magic do in your WIP? Where does the mystical power fall short?

That's a really fun question actually! I don't think there is something that magic can't do, though there are lots of magicks that are not accessible to everyone. But with such a wide cast of spirits and gods, anything is possible in the end. The one thing they do look into is bringing people back from the dead, but whether that is possible you'll have to see for yourself :3

🏙️Are there any especially famous cities or nations in your WIP? What are they known for?

I think there's a post about this on my blog somewhere, but one cool place is Omsenia! It is the capital of the empire that conquered the entire central / western parts of the continent. It's a city built on a number of sharp, narrow cliffs. A fortress has been on top of a mountain, although spire would be a better name for it. No one has ever climbed those stairs before and come down, for it is the empress that lives atop them. At least, they say she is still alive. It's been 600 years after all...

🪙When people go on adventures in your WIP, what are they looking for? Fame, fortune, power?

Answers. It's always answers. What happened to my mother? What happened to an entire civilisation? What will happen to the world? The clock's ticking...

🙅Are there any kinds of forbidden magic? What kinds, and why?

There isn't a formal school of magic (that Phei knows of at least), so forbidden isn't something she knows. However, her skills do allow her to mess with the dead when she becomes proficient, and that isn't something she _should_ be doing.

🦁Have any non-magical creatures been domesticated in your WIP that aren’t domesticated in the real world? Which ones?

Surprisingly... not really? Should do some funky things with that actually...

WIP Tag Game

A big thanks to @byjillianmaria for the tag on this (check out her responses over here). Going to be leaving this as an open tag, so if you like the sounds of these questions, feel free to answer!

Answering these for the Starcrossed Cycle, because why not?

01 - What’s the first part of your WIP that you created?

The characters of Iradurel and Ryla came first, since I'm porting them over from an older work in order to flesh them out into MCs that are more than just cardboard cutouts of tropes, as they were in their first incarnation.

02 - If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?

Doom or Destiny by Blondie, that's always been the first track on my playlist for the Starcrossed Cycle, so it can't be anything else!

03 - What are your favourite characters that you made? Why?

I gotta go with Ryla and Iradurel, my forever girls. The amount of my life that I have spent imagining scenarios for these blorbos is not insignificant! They're both the culmination of a bunch of different character tropes and archetypes and plots that make me start frothing at the mouth, completely self indulgent, so they can't not be my favourites!

04 - What other pieces of media do you think your fanbase would share?

Probably Arcane, Xena: Warrior Princess, RWBY, Lycoris Recoil, and Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden Wastes.

05 - What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP?

Finding the time and will to write! The last handful of years have not been kind to my mental state, which I'm sure a lot of people can relate to!

06 - Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!

The two that come to mind aren't fully animals, though they sorta look it. There's the Opiri, which are giant beetle monsters that never stop growing and go into a killing frenzy when they sense people doing magic (kind of a drawback in a magical world), then there are the Eidolons, a now-extinct race of draconic entities that were living vessels the gods could use to communicate with mortals. But as for actual animals, the setting for this thing takes place on an alien world, so I've been doing this thing where I'll mention horses, but describe them as having six legs and a beak just to make it weird!

07 - How do your characters travel/get around?

Walking, magically teleporting, and cross country trains are the most common means of travel I use throughout this thing.

08 - What part of your WIP are you working on right now?

Rehashing the middle part of my outline, because I realize I left myself a whole tangle of plotholes that I need to get myself out of for the back half of this thing to make sense!!!!!

09 - What aspects (tropes, maybe?) You think will draw your audience in?

Lesbians.

10 - What are your hopes for your WIP?

lol to actually finish it? I'm writing this for funsies, and I honestly don't care if it brings me fame or fortune or languishes in obscurity forever. So long as I'm happy with it, that's all that I care about!

WIP Tag Game

I was tagged by @nrivanwrites!! And seeing as how I'm currently procrastinating on To Consume, I'll be answering for that one :)

1. What’s the first part of your WIP that you created?

I have to write chronologically, so technically the first scene I wrote was the opening chapter, with Alya and her mother driving to their new home... however, I'd say the first scene I had conceptualized in my head was the, erm, confrontation between Alya and Matthias.

2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?

I associate this WIP most heavily with Ptolemaea by Ethel Cain (which is associated with the aforementioned confrontation), so... probably a snippet from that song, specifically the part where Ethel breaks down and starts screaming. Let's not give people any doubt about what kind of show this would be, huh?

3. What are your favorite characters that you made? Why?

The whole cast is quite dear, but I'm really loving how Kass is turning out this draft! She's gotten a bit more... weird, which has been really fun to play with. Also having her just be fascinated with the supernatural and morbid stuff going on gives her an excuse to get wrapped up in the plot that's independent of Alya, which is so important for a love interest.

4. What other pieces of media do you think your fanbase would share?

I just finished reading My Darling Dreadful Thing by Johanna Van Veen, and was shocked by how similar it was to To Consume! So fans of sapphic gothic horror will also love that one. I do also feel like fans of Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass will like the religious horror aspects, since both works take place in a rather isolated Catholic community.

5. What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP?

Just, letting myself get unapologetically gross with this one. Leaning into the gothic horror tropes when my instinct would be to shy away. In the first draft, I was still writing this as a Young Adult novel, but the more I get into it the more I think that it's probably going to end up as an Adult novel instead. Figuring out that shift in tone has been difficult.

6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!

Kass lives on a farm, so there are quite a few animals around! The girls are going to sacrifice a chicken in a few chapters. Hogs may or may not eat someone, and that someone may or may not be already dead. Also there's a hallucination of a wolf wearing the pelt of a lamb that may or may not be a version of God! It's fun times all around!

7. How do your characters travel/get around?

Alya mostly walks, but sometimes her mom drives her places.

8. What part of your WIP are you working on right now?

I'm... about a third of the way through, maybe a little less? I'm on chapter 9, Alya is sitting in her Morality class and is about to have a very bad time.

9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) You think will draw your audience in?

The gothic horror, the cannibalism, the blasphemy, the cannibalism as blasphemy, the religious horror, the violence of it, the queerness, the absolute Catholicism of it all.

10. What are your hopes for your WIP?

I would love to get this one to critique partners this year, and then to beta readers either late this year or early next!

acrostic ; tag game

tagged by @sodaliteskull for the word RETROGRADE. I'm going to be blowing the dust off the current The Last Lorinean draft in the hopes that it will inspire me to dive back in.

R: "Running is as good as guilty."

E: "Every time I move myself, I have to rest in a state where I can hardly think, let alone spare magic."

T: The lacing on my dress came out uneven, but I could not be bothered to fix it, not even smoothing out the fly-aways in my braid before leaving my room to go downstairs for breakfast.

R: "Rather than filling a magical void, we seem to leak magic everywhere."

O: One felt more right than the others, almost warmer as my skin passed across its edge.

G: Gasping for breath, I wrenched myself out of bed and stumbled to the hall, plotting the quickest path through the Home to reach fresh air.

R: Regret and love all in one glance.

A: Again, I felt her thoughts pressing against mine in their grief.

D: Different faces every time, perhaps because of the sympathy in the worker’s eyes when I asked them for more water, my own voice unfamiliar to me.

E: Even in that word of nothingness, cold clawed its way into my chest and forbade me from speaking.

I'm tagging @souverian-are-we @thebrownleathernotebook and @theink-stainedfolk and your word is WEFT
