for every person you forgive, you heal a wound of your own.

لا تُفقد السماء صوتك، كن عبداً إذا دعا تعرفه الملائكة فتقول : يا رب صوتٌ معروف من عبد معروف Do not let the heavens miss your voice, be a servant whom the angels recognise when you supplicate, you utter your demands and they say "Our Lord, it is a well known voice from a well known slave" ‏-

“If you cannot benefit, then do not harm. If you cannot bring joy, then do not bring distress. If you cannot praise, then do not blame.”

- Yahya ibn Mu’adh, may Allah have mercy on him,

im really just thinking of being young and believing that getting older means coming into the Secrets™ of being and then getting older and realising maybe there are no secrets. only being. but anyway.

insisting on the magic in the mundane really is the only, only way to get through this life with some fragment of your sanity intact

when i think about this, i don’t think i mean it in the sense of “this rundown car park is hideous so i’m going to transform it in my mind and make it grand”, i mean it more in the sense “this rundown car park is hideous but the three dandelions growing out of that cracked patch of tarmac look like a sunburst”. i mean it in that…it’s not so much eclipsing or erasing the drab and ordinary for something brighter, but rather holding it in tandem with whatever brief moment of beauty you find there and allowing them both to exist simultaneously. the car park is hideous and the jauntiest dandelions are blooming there, the footpath is falling apart and the setting sun on the cracks turns it all into a 5 minute river delta, that lamppost is rusted beyond belief, and a solitary blackbird sits perched like a warbling prince on top of it, etc., etc.,…..you know?

maybe if you bundled yourself up and went for a walk out in the cold then came back inside with rosy cheeks and cool skin and warmed yourself up with a nice warm cup of herbal tea with honey maybe then you'd calm down
