I feel like nobody on Tumblr knows that the international space station is being discontinued.

Did you know that? In less than a decade it will be gone

Excerpts from the article:

"...NASA has selected SpaceX, creator of a revolution in next-generation reusable Starship rockets that will speed humans to the Moon and to Mars, to produce a specially designed spacecraft that would act as a Styx-like tugboat to guide the ISS to its demise."

...

"'To move the ISS from its present 400-kilometer altitude to an 800-kilometer altitude circular orbit requires a boost of about 220 meters per second, about the same as required for precise de-orbit control,' explains [Jean-Jacques Dordain, Director General of the European Space Agency when the ISS was being built and expanded, and former NASA Administrator Michael Griffin] in an open letter, published via SpaceNews, to colleagues, friends and allies scattered across the space partners that co-constructed the orbital outpost.

'Our question to the current generation is: since the boost stage must be built anyway, would it not be better to use that stage to place the ISS in a higher orbit for the possible use of a future generation than to destroy it upon reentry?'"

"empowering women by sending katy perry to space for 2 minutes" shut the fuck up. samantha cristoforetti was the first female commander of the international space station and she became an astronaut because of star trek. and there is a real chance she is a kirk/spock shipper

oooh rare leap year post, adds to the resale value

"Oil company Chevron must pay $744.6 million to restore damage it caused to southeast Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, a jury ruled on Friday [April 4, 2025] following a landmark trial more than a decade in the making.

The case was the first of dozens of pending lawsuits to reach trial in Louisiana against the world’s leading oil companies for their role in accelerating land loss along the state’s rapidly disappearing coast. The verdict – which Chevron says it will appeal – could set a precedent leaving other oil and gas firms on the hook for billions of dollars in damages tied to land loss and environmental degradation...

The jury awarded $575 million to compensate for land loss, $161 million to compensate for contamination and $8.6 million for abandoned equipment. The amount earmarked for restoration exceeds $1.1 billion when including interest, according to attorneys for Talbot, Carmouche & Marcello, the firm behind the lawsuit.

Plaquemines Parish, the southeast Louisiana district which brought the lawsuit, had asked for $2.6 billion in damages...

How are oil companies contributing to Louisiana’s land loss?

The lawsuit against Chevron was filed in 2013 by Plaquemines Parish, a rural district in Louisiana straddling the final leg of the Mississippi River heading into the Gulf of Mexico, also referred to as the Gulf of America as declared by President Donald Trump.

Louisiana’s coastal parishes have lost more than 2,000 square miles (5,180 square kilometers) of land over the past century, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which has also identified oil and gas infrastructure as a significant cause. The state could lose another 3,000 square miles (7,770 square kilometers) in the coming decades, its coastal protection agency has warned...

Thousands of miles of canals cut through the wetlands by oil companies weakens them and exacerbates the impacts of sea level rise. Industrial wastewater from oil production degrades the surrounding soil and vegetation. The torn up wetlands leave South Louisiana – home to some of the nation’s biggest ports and key energy sector infrastructure -- more vulnerable to flooding and destruction from extreme weather events like hurricanes...

Attorney Jimmy Faircloth, Jr., who represented the state of Louisiana, which has backed Plaquemines and other local governments in their lawsuits against oil companies, told jurors from the parish that Chevron was telling them their community was not worth preserving.

“Our communities are built on coast, our families raised on coast, our children go to school on coast,” Faircloth said. “The state of Louisiana will not surrender the coast, it’s for the good of the state that the coast be maintained.”

What does this mean for future litigation against oil companies?

Louisiana’s economy has long been heavily dependent on the oil and gas industry and the industry holds significant political power. Even so, Louisiana’s staunchly pro-industry Gov. Jeff Landry has supported the lawsuits, including bringing the state on board during his tenure as Attorney General.

Oil companies have fought tooth and nail to quash the litigation, including unsuccessfully lobbying Louisiana’s Legislature to pass a law to invalidate the claims. Chevron and other firms also repeatedly tried to move the lawsuits into federal court where they believed they would find a more sympathetic audience.

But the heavy price Chevron is set to pay could hasten other firms to seek settlements in the dozens of other lawsuits across Louisiana. Plaquemines alone has 20 other cases pending against oil companies.

The state is running out of money to support its ambitious coastal restoration plans, which have been fueled by soon-expiring settlement funds from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and supporters of the litigation say payouts could provide a much-needed injection of funds...

Attorneys for the parish said they hope that big payout will prompt more oil companies to come to the table to negotiate and channel more funding towards coastal restoration.

“Our energy is focused on securing appropriate verdicts and awards for every parish involved in these actions,” Carmouche said in a statement. “If we continue to be successful in our efforts, these parishes, and Louisiana, will have sent a clear message that Louisiana’s future must be built around a new balance between our energy industry and environmental necessities.”"

21 days away from 2020, folks.

does anyone know what’s wrong with the time stamps?!???!

time travelers

This post has me dying on the inside I’m a math nerd AND THIS HURTS OMLLL GUYS PLEASE LEARN HOW TO COUNT

Avatar
atheist-of-ominous-threats

let’s solve it once and for all:

EVEN NUMBERS: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ect.

ODD NUMBERS: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, ect.

if it splits into two EVEN groups, then it’s an even number. if it don’t, then it’s an odd number.

50 and 30 are both even numbers.

but 5 splits into 2.5 and 2.5. that must be even

so must the others

if a number can split into TWO EVEN INTEGERS it is even, if it cannot it is odd

example:

5 splits into 2.5 and 2.5, but 2.5 is not an integer so 5 is odd

10 splits into 5 and 5, 5 is an integer so it is even

THIS IS NOT HARD TO GRASP

but 5.0 is the same as 5, and therefore 5 isn’t an integer. this means 10 is odd

what the FUCK is going on here

this is how I feel discussing math with my lab partners.

I hate math, and am by no means particularly good at it, but this post is gold and genuinely made me laugh out loud

I didn’t realize how relevant this post would be when I made this blog.

I can’t imagine it’ll come up again in the next 1,375 days, right?

… Right???

did you know that seven is the only single diget intiger that has two syllables?

Also, and number beyond that that has a seven in it will have one more syllable than a number that doesn’t (i.e. 15 has two syllables but 17 has three)

You want to call your House rep now and tell them Trump needs to be impeached immediately for defying a Supreme Court order (re: Kilmar Abrego Garcia), which functionally voids our constitution and means no one in America has rights anymore.

I am not exaggerating.

As of now, anybody can be disappeared, no due process, no recourse. Trump is openly disregarding a Supreme Court order and says he’ll send US citizens to El Salvador.

This is not a drill.

Call your House rep and tell them they must impeach. Tell them if they cannot bring themselves to impeach, they must resign. A more open and shut case to impeach is not possible. Trump and his administration are saying openly, in public, that anybody can be kidnapped by ICE, even in error, and disappeared permanently.

Call your senators, too, and tell them to support impeachment (it goes to them once it passes a majority House vote).

"Hello, my name is _______ and I am a constituent from _______. My address is ________.

I am reaching out today to urge Representative ______ to call for the impeachment of President Trump due to his refusal to comply with the Supreme Court's April 10th decision regarding Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was unlawfully deported and has been charged with no crime. As Justice Sotomayor stated, this inaction implies the government's ability to 'deport and incarcerate any person, including U.S. citizens, without legal consequence, so long as it does so before a court can intervene.' This precedent is unconstitutional, highly illegal, and grounds for impeachment. Every individual, regardless of immigration status, must be guaranteed a right to due process.

Representative _____, I urge you to stand on the right side of history today by calling for President Trump's impeachment. This administration can not be allowed to continue unilaterally defying the checks and balances that are intrinsic to our government."

You can also find your representative and senators and their phone numbers on https://5calls.org/

Please don't be afraid of calling. Your job would just be to be a data point, not to sound perfect. Here's some info on why calling is effective.

Found the source for Trump saying he wants to deport U.S. citizens to El Salvador and it’s somehow even more ghoulish than I expected:

But critics and legal experts have argued that the case sets a dangerous precedent of allowing the executive branch the expansive and chilling power to imprison individuals in different countries without due process — especially as Trump continues to float sending U.S. citizens to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center.
“Home-growns are next. The home-growns,” Trump told Bukele. “You gotta build about five more places. It’s not big enough.”

“And when the courts stop you, stand before the country and say, the chief justice has made his ruling. Now let him enforce it.”

It’s been the plan all along to cause a constitutional crisis. It only works if we take it lying down, however.

USEFUL WEBSITE I FOUND PUBLISHED FROM THE CREATOR ON REDDIT A FEW DAYS AGO. it had like only 3 upvotes at the time.

share it with your friends

it’ll generate a script for you for the intro and outro and provide tips

gonna take a hot shower and put on a big t shirt and my undies and i’m gonna sit on the floor and color at my coffee table like im 6 years old again and then i’ll feel better

You know that post that was going around like a year ago. That said something like 'hey you don't need to wear any makeup' and people kept commenting shit like 'yeah just a little eyeliner is enough'. This is how this post feels to me

Samsung updated their UI on my phone overnight and I am NOT a fan. Unfortunately reverting takes way too much work

what they dont tell you about adulthood is that it’s startlingly easy to go long periods of time without having any fun at all not even a little bit. btw this causes ur brain to try to kill you with knives and hammers.

Yeah the thing is, when you're a kid, there are often a lot of people going out of their way to make things fun for you: parents, other family members, your friends' parents/families, adults at school and at community places like libraries...and that's on top of your friends your own age, and the general fact that as a kid having fun is one of your top priorities.

And then if you go to college, there aren't quite so many people making things fun for you--although there are RAs, and the student life office, and various clubs and organizations doing activities, etc.--but you're in an environment where your friends are nearby and you all have similar schedules and responsibilities, so a lot fun just kind of arises spontaneously.

But once you're out on your own, in the workforce and whatnot, all that just drops of a cliff. Planned activities for adults exist, but you generally have to seek them out, rather than having them relentlessly advertised to you and/or taking place in locations where you will bump into them on the way to breakfast. And your friends are all spread out, and everyone's busy at different times, so you aren't just bumping into people and getting sucked into whatever adventure they have going on, you have to make arrangements.

It's a big shift! If you have kids, you generally figure out pretty quick that your role is now the Planner Of Fun, but without that big obvious signpost, it can feel like the world just gradually stopped having fun things in it.

But it hasn't; you just have to plan and seek out opportunities for fun yourself, because it's no longer anyone else's job to put them in front of you--it's yours!

TL:DR, when you're an adult you've got to take yourself to the aquarium and pick out a plushie in the gift shop and pay for it with your own credit card; you don't just wake up one day and find out that's happening. (Or that it's a have-dinner-on-a-picnic-blanket-in-the-living-room day, or that you're going to your cousins' house where you can splash around in the creek and look for frogs, or that's it's the day when we put the speakers in the window and let the music echo in the alley down below while we wash the car, or anything!)
