I’m reading that new memoir about working at Facebook,”Careless People,” and it’s just fucking insane.

At one point Facebook wanted to be an international hub for organ donation. The “Lean In” lady asked why she couldn’t go down to Mexico and buy a kidney if her four year old needs one. This is literally on p.57. What the fuck else is going to be in this book if that is on page 57

Facebook also had to have protocols for armed raids of its foreign offices because they violated so many laws or failed to pay taxes or comply with other official protocols!! How is this a company that still exists!!!

“Doing jail time in a foreign country is not a reasonable ask from your bosses” — legitimately an argument the author’s husband had to have with her!!

This book has gotten so insane I can’t even summarize anymore. I can only post photos of this moment where Sheryl Sandberg wears her pajamas on a private jet and tries to make her heavily pregnant employee cuddle in bed with her on a flight back to California from Davos, Switzerland.

Following this, we discover that Sheryl says, “you should have gotten in the bed,” and ices out the narrator. Over the past couple years, I've slowly come to really dislike the term 'neurodivergent', or at least the way in which it is used.

When used in the original context, it just means 'a brain that diverges from normal'. I think my beef with that is that it assumes there is a Normal Brain, and I am increasingly of the opinion that that is not true. There is not one grand Neurotypical that serves as the holotype of "normal". It reminds me of concepts like race, where there's often more variation within a racial category than there is between racial categories.

The way I see 'neurodivergent' more commonly used now is even worse. It seems to just mean 'neurodevelopmental disorders', which really boils down to "ASD + ADHD + we list a few of the dys- conditions for the sake of seeming inclusive, but we all know we're not actually talking about them."

I've seen people be like "oh, things like depression don't count, because that's a condition that people recover fully from, and not a Neurotype". Leaving aside that stating you people recover fully from depression like it's nothing is certainly A Choice, there are plenty of mental illnesses where that is not the case!

So sometimes people with bipolar disorder and schizo-spec disorders get to be included, but more often than not they get shoved aside, because what could we possibly have in common with the Crazy People? Those are just the kinds of labels you get given by mistake when you are actually just Neurodivergent, which is not like being Crazy at all.

Then you get people saying things like "No, having a TBI or epilepsy can't count, because it's "not pervasively linked to the individual's personality or perception of the world", which is such an ignorant take that I would need an entirely new post to talk about it in full. And God forbid anybody acknowledge intellectual disability or level 3 autism, because those aren't comfortable to talk about, and it's easier to treat them as a stereotypical Other and keep playing the respectability politics game.

Essentially, I feel like what 'neurodivergent' often actually means is 'ADHD or level 1/ low support needs autism', and that frankly it's closer to 'Indigo children' than it is to any kind of useful way to self-identify or organise.

If you have thoughts on the word 'neurodivergent', be they positive or negative, feel free to share them. I'm not angry or anything; I've been thinking about this a lot, and I'd like to hear your thoughts too.
