Not to tell anyone in a horror story what to do, but:

Forests are normally loud.

They're full of life. There's endless animals that live there. They make noises. Lots of them.

If you ever are in a forest and it's quiet, that's not right. That means something is very wrong. You should probably either be similarly quiet until you can figure out what's going on, or you should get out of there very quickly.

THIS THIS THIS

Having the privilege of growing up in a rural area (until industrialism began to encroach on My Forest a few years ago 😒) plus the stories my mom tells about when she lived in the jungles of Panamá (🇵🇦), I've always including the woods being loud and going silent when something is very wrong.

The howls of coyotes and the screaming of insects are not the scary thing.

It's the silence you should be afraid of.

Yess 1000% if it's silent there is a reason and it's usually a dangerous reason..

Listen, I wanted to join the military too. I really, really did. But if your motivation for joining the military is anything except going somewhere far away and killing people, rethink.

If it is getting away from the situation that you’re in, if it’s the ability to serve your country full-time, if it’s camaraderie and wearing a uniform and the opportunity for college and/or job training, if it’s physical fitness and learning to live with other people who are really different than you, heck, if it’s fully paid-for travel and the ability to do cool things like respond to disasters and fight wildfires…

JOIN THE NATIONAL CIVILIAN COMMUNITY CORPS OR A CONSERVATION CORPS INSTEAD.

AmeriCorps NCCC is a residential, team-based national service program. It’s free. They provide all travel, lodging, food, and training. They even pay you a stipend. At the end you get money for college or job training. Almost everyone 18-26 gets in. If you want to be a team leader you can be older than that.

You travel around the country for 1-2 years with a diverse team doing anything from building parks to trail maintenance to serving with a food pantry to disaster relief to cutting fire line to building houses.

If you have any questions I was a team leader with this program. I am happy to answer them.

random, but I think the way people talk about abusers as hypercompetent, calculating manipulators that Know exactly what they're doing makes it easier for people to get into abusive relationships

The people who abused me prolly had no idea what the fuck they were doing. It was still bad! I still don't regret buggin out!! But I don't think they had a secret wall covered in red string linking notes like "How to fuck up this person specifically". Pretty sure they were in their own bubble the whole damn time, actually, and yeah, that does make it harder to recognize or get out of

Many abusive people are doing it not out of a desire to make you suffer, but because they are dealing with unprocessed trauma and other things like that. The person who abused me does not realize that her words and actions cause harm; she does not know how to self-regulate and her dysregulation comes out as anger and control.

This is really important to realize, not in order to excuse abuse, but because if you think only machiavellian villains can be abusive you will not be able to recognize when you are being abusive, because you know you aren't a machiavellian villain.

Abuser is not a personality because abuse is a form of behavior and not an ingrained trait. People can change that behavior and no longer commit abuse. That doesn't mean the people that they hurt HAVE to forgive them, but it's an important distinction nonetheless.

This man, can we just look at this for a minute…? The angles are cool and all but this guy??? How fucking strong are his calves and his fucking core for that matter???? How did he do this??? What the fuck????

That's it. I'm never taking pictures normally again.

This does not even begin to cover the weirdness of cathode ray televisions.

They are literally particle accelerators that you point at your face.

And for eighty years, Americans' favorite thing to do was turn them on and stare at them for hours.

If you overcharge them, they emit gamma radiation.

Servicing them is like disarming a bomb -- their capacitors are enormous and are usually charged to hundreds or thousands of volts, and most of them have no bleed system that drains that charge, meaning that they can still be dangerous months or years after the last time they were powered up. A discharge can not only electrocute you, it can cause tools to melt or explode.

A black-and-white cathode ray TV driven by an unmodulated analog signal is theoretically capable of resolution that would require a microscope to perceive.

Old school CRT monitors had the same issues.

Back when, I worked at a small whitebox pc manufacturer. One day, a service tech brought back an older, gigantic (30 inch or so) AutoCAD monitor from a service call. The customer said "Made me feel nauseous"

So, we put it on the bench and fired it up. You immediately felt the hair on your body stand up, and my co worker put his hand up close to turn the power off, and his hand and forearm started spasming - I yanked the power cord from the wall as the tingle I was feeling began to feel hot.

No idea what was wrong with the thing, but it was kicking out some serious electro magnetic radiation.

Remembering the almost imperceptible high pitched buzzing that let you know the tv was still on even when nothing was on the screen. Also putting your forearm near the screen and watching the hairs stand up

The little crackle if you touched the screen to wipe it...

Omg no one's even talking about the smell of the screen

This is both horrifying to read and nostalgic

I knew something was absolutely terrifying about CRTs but I just figured I was paranoid... Turns out I was right to be scared lmao

My name is Tala Nassar, I'm 17 years old from Gaza.

My mother is in critical medical condition. She was previously diagnosed with breast cancer in her left breast.

Her condition is indescribably serious, and her diagnosis worsens day by day. This situation has been exacerbated by the recent bombings and ground invasion of our area in Nusairat. Her condition has deteriorated further due to the toxic gases from bombs dropped just meters away from our home, and even from the smoke resulting from cooking over an open fire due to the lack of gas.

We have been displaced to the city of Rafah and are still living in makeshift tents, and she has not received any treatment since the beginning of the aggression on Gaza. The only cancer hospital in Gaza has been completely destroyed for a long time. Her weakened immune system and diabetes make matters worse, as finding any medication at the moment is impossible. We are incredibly afraid of the possibility of a malignant tumor or something worse occurring.

Please help us. We desperately need medical assistance for my mother, and time is running out for us. Your support can make a difference in saving her life.

I’ve spoken with Tala’s cousin, @lailashaqoura, and have been offering commissions in exchange for donations to this fundraiser. If that interests you, examples of my artwork are here. Please, they’ve received very little money so far and could use all the help they could get.

A woman in a burnt displacement camp in Rafah delivers a heart-wrenching appealafter occupation forces bombed innocent civilians sheltering there. She desperately questions the absence of support from Arab and Muslim countries, naming Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt, and decries the world's inaction. She mentions that the recent attack killed and injured scores of innocent people from all ages and genders.

me continuing to make terrible posts about my extremely niche interests instead of anything people actually followed me for:

Note: this is not ferret abuse, they really do enjoy being carried like sacks of potatos.

As a ferret owner I can confirm that my three ferrets do not give a single fuck about being held like that. A ferret WILL let you know if it doesn’t like how you’re holding it. But they like being turned into potato sacks for some reason.

Yeah ferrets get super limp sometimes when you hold them, plus they have a flexible spine and ribs, it doesn’t bother them a bit. They are just loose sacks of meat and kleptomania.

Me continuing to make my extremely niche posts while gesturing with a consenting ferret

Where's that post that's like "I can't buy expensive things like plane tickets on my phone, I have to use my laptop, big purchases are for the big screen"

Because apparently this is a literal actual thing that retailers hate cuz you think more before spending a lot of money, they want you to spend a lot without thinking about it so much

Keep buying Big Things on the Big Screen, it's healthy for you financially to think before spending a lot of money!
