I’m sometimes reminded of the fact that the Maria Ross Prison Break Fake Death Incident never happens in ‘03, and so that moment where manga/BH!Ed realizes he actually can trust Mustang never comes to pass (until possibly after he goes AWOL? I haven’t gotten to that part in my rewatch so not sure, but either way it wasn’t as impactful). In ‘03, Mustang never really earns Ed’s trust (because he’s literally so much more of a horrible person!!! lol) and so Hughes (and to a lesser extent Armstrong) is actually the ONLY PERSON IN THE WHOLE MILITARY he can at least halfway trust and who he has some real respect and admiration for. Which makes it so much worse that he DIES on him. It just kills me how Brotherhood is about Ed learning to trust and open up to those around him, while ‘03 is largely about how he’s forced to close himself off from the untrustworthy people around him and isolate himself from everyone except his brother (he even leaves Winry behind after the kidnapping incident, to keep her safe). And then, towards the very end (when he makes the decision to kill Sloth) he finally shuts his brother out, too. And then he wears that incredibly sad wistful/resigned look on his face for the entire rest of the show.
