I thought this would be a kind of fun little thing if anyone was interested. You can also just browse this without actually taking the quiz if you're just interested in seeing what's inspired me while I've been writing. It also works if you're looking for suggestions on things you might enjoy watching that have similar vibes in one way or another to The Other Side. They're not in any kind of super specific order, but they're not completely random either. It's generally stuff that's more heavily inspiring at the top and less inspiring the further down you go. But, y'know. In a vibes kind of way.

““The mannerisms that help define gender - the way in which people walk, swing their hips, gesture with their hands, move their mouths and eyes when they talk, take up space - are all based upon how non disabled people move…The construct of gender depends not only upon the male body and female body, but also on the non disabled body.””

My personal goal is to try and make fanfic binding as accessible to everyone as possible, so here are some resources on how to make a fanfic hardcover for under $25.

This is a barebones bind for the broke college students and such. Happy to field questions, too!

Here's a proposed budget breakdown:

Loosely organized thoughts:

  • Fanfic bookbinders often share typesets amongst each other. Never pay for a typeset for a fanfic.
  • You'll hear a lot about grain direction for your printer paper, but as a newbie on a budget without your own printer, settle for some nice 92 bright paper. If you like the hobby, splurge after but expect to pay at least 2-3x more for short grain paper.
  • Printing is a pain because some copy shops won't let you print intellectual property smut, and it's very expensive. You are better off bartering instead or looking for a free printer on Buy Nothing.
  • You know the thick paper wrapping that comes with online orders? It's a good weight for endpapers if you need to scrounge. Paper grocery bags or gift bags (birthday presents) might work, too.
  • Ask your local library to give you covers from books they are throwing out. Ask for outdated textbooks (those covers are built like tanks) or three-ring binders that are too busted to be binders anymore.
  • Obtain a used book that was mass produced (so your destruction of it does not impede anyone's access) and maybe even become a little vindictive with it.
  • If you can afford it, I recommend the Olfa SVR knife (~$10)
  • If you can afford it, upgrade your ruler to a t-square.

I really hope this resource is helpful! I want to stress how possible this is and encourage people to cherish what they love through art.

If you are interested in fanfic binding and have a little more disposable income, I have an affordable Fan Fiction Bookbinding Starter Pack that I carry on my site. I pack them myself and drop them 1x/month on the 15th.

This is such a great resource for anyone starting out fanbinding!

I'm n 09 fan but you hit the nail on the head with the Ed review tbh. 03 got a lot right, the intensity, the tragedy, color, framing, and Ed's characterization, and I feel like 09s biggest weakness is that Bones didnt see it worth the time to put that buildup and care back in the series. Like there's some assumption you've seen 03 so they didnt need to build those things up again. I cant stand the first arc of 09 because 03 did everything better and the conclusion to 09 is more satisfying when -

-when the early bits hit harder. Feels more earned than just hopeful. I really wish they’d just combined the two to get that really emotional impact alongside the earned happy ending.

thank you, anon, for the back up here. i know this is just one, definitely unpopular, opinion, and i don’t expect people to agree with me, but it is nice when people do.

i understand why they had to rush it, because then the already long 64 episodes would be around 75-80, and only so much time had passed between the two series that it would be tedious to retread the same material. but when most people now skip the 03 series, they dont know what theyre missing with that intensity and characterization and its really unfortunate. then they hear bad things about 03 and assume theyre true.

i would agree that fmab is the Technically better (as in, from an actual technical standpoint…its more polished, but that doesn’t mean it’s overall better) but i think 03 is still equal to it in terms of quality and impact, and in many (but not all) areas exceeds it in emotional weight and depth. and as far as the happy ending goes, i agree. the fmab ending (the general climax/resolution: ed beats father, gives up his alchemy, beats truth, and reclaims what he lost and got even more than he started with) is amazing and clever and satisfying. but parts of it while watching, like when he mentions nina, im like…wait really? you’re mentioning nina? i hardly remember her in this series.

and ed has learned this huge lesson in fmab leading to him beating truth, but in comparison to 03 ed i feel…what did he really learn? fmab ed learned friendship is the real alchemy lol (that’s very reductive i apologize. it is a really good lesson–that we’re simple humans and that’s okay because the bonds we make are worth the weakness–and i love that scene so so much). i feel fmab didnt earn much because in comparison to 03 (and again, i only feel this negativity toward fmab because ive seen 03. the comparison is the real enemy here, because otherwise i wouldn’t have a problem with fmab beyond maybe just not caring for ed because he’s just not my kind of character, but i wouldn’t have much backing to WHY i dont care for him. 03 gives me the specific reasons by having what fmab doesnt.)

he didnt truly get challenged. 03 ed had all his beliefs, morals, and worldview challenged, while fmab ed was usually just right about everything. the lesson he learned was one he should have learned after he transmuted his mother. it was an obvious lesson “hey youre just a human accept it. one is all and all is one.” while 03 ed learned that lesson long ago. the lessons ed learns are more extensions of accepting that he’s a small human. he learns about what that means. what his impact on the world is. what consequences are. what the value of believing in something is. what it means to lose something. the flaws of equivalent exchange as a philosophy of life. etc. his lessons are far more applicable to real life and honestly, at the risk of sounding pretentious because “blah blah mature story = better” which is something i don’t generally believe (though it is case by case), are more mature.

i probably went on a tangent, but point is, fmab good, but i do find 03 to be more mature, deeper, and have a more compelling interpretation of edward. and i agree with anon that the rushed beginning of fmab (remember fmab covers what happened over 33 episodes of fma03 in a measly 12!! fma 03 had fillers and anime-original plotlines, sure, but they were good–except for episode 4 i fucking hate that episode. and the tree people episode is a little weird but was important for lust’s character–and all added something. “fillers” arent bad! they’re important for pacing and development!) contribute to why fmab ed as a character falls flat to me (but there’s also a lot more than just the beginning as to why he does).

where fmab ed is right in his actions in liore, where he came in assuming he knew better than everyone there and disrupted their way of life for selfish reasons and this is never addressed, 03 ed learns that he was arrogant and selfish and his pursuit of a dream caused harm to the world around him

where fmab ed is right to ignore race and gets the soldier’s side of things and empathizes with them and their struggles, fma 03 ed acknowledges his racism and learns the true horrors and evil of an imperialistic and genocidal military and learns that he IS a part of it, and cant be complacent or assume himself separate or that he doesn’t contribute to the problem

where fmab ed learns that equivalent exchange isnt accurate because you can get everything back and more if you just never give up on your dreams and put in the effort (which isn’t inherently bad message), 03 ed learns that equivalent exchange isn’t accurate because chasing down a dream with disregard to its effects on the world is just an example of human greed and ignorance, and the effort you put in might make you lose more than you think (because the more you take the less you have). and that it’s not accurate because every loss isn’t truly a loss, and trying to get back what you lost means giving up what you gained. despite learning that the concept is kinda bullshit, 03 ed, who was once apathetic and didn’t think he needed to believe in anything, decides that it’s okay to have faith in something despite external evidence, like the idea that all your efforts aren’t in vain.

where fmab ed’s Big Speech is “im just an insignificant human and i accept that because being human isnt so bad with all the human connections you make (because we’re weak and need each other to survive and thats okay),” which is a great lesson but isnt as hard hitting as 03′s Big Speech which is “there is no war that isnt in some part caused by all of us (complacency and ignorance is bad)…there’s a whole world outside of us and our dreams (we’re insignificant humans but we cause a lot of harm by giving into human greed and denying our place in the world).” also while fmab ed’s speech on racism is “we should see past race and treat each other as equals” which again is not a bad lesson but again compared to 03′s which is “i have racist views, and so does everyone, and you can’t always trust how you feel, like when i felt scared of scar for being ishbalan, which is why we all have to remember things we’ve learned can be wrong and we have to form our own answers slowly over time about how the world actually is” which is stronger, and has more weight when he admits he himself, as a white boy, has prejudice.

where fmab is an idealistic hero who you’re supposed to look up to and who acts far older than he is (we occasionally get people saying “oh yeah he’s just a kid” when he mentions not wanting to kill someone, and then those same people feel inspired by his childish idealism), 03 ed frequently reminds us that he is a human, and a child, with much to learn and who is just doing his best. who makes mistakes and grows. who has childish views and an egocentricity and morals that he learns dont always apply and things are more morally complex than he thinks and so its not his place to enact judgement, and the fact that he is a literal child soldier is played with in earnest, rather than being protected by the genre where yeah kids can be soldiers and it’s not a big deal

i had a convo with my cousin’s bf about this and he was a fan of my phrasing “fmab places ed [a white teenager in a racist genocidal military]as the moral center of the show while fma 03 recognizes ed is young and stupid with a lot to learn” so yeah

fmab makes an inappropriate choice placing ed as the moral center (where even though he makes mistakes, his morals ultimately shape the messages of the story and characters’ morality are measured in comparison to ed, and the writing clams up at any moral greyness)

fma 03 writers specifically said they dont want ed to be a role model, but human, and there is no “moral center” of the show because it has way more nuance on what’s right/wrong and is unafraid to show morally grey characters and actions without saying “this is wrong and this is right”

I read an AITA post a few weeks back about a woman who liked having snacks in the bath when she's had a long day (a result of residual trauma iirc - the bath was her safe space). Her brand new husband of three weeks, a man twice her age who had no job, made her pay all of his bills and do all housework, and spent all day every day gaming because he wanted to make it as a Twitch streamer, had always been fine with this; but, on the day in question, had whisked her bath snacks out of her hands as she was on her way to the bathroom and tried to bin them, telling her it was time to 'break her of that filthy habit in his home'. She told him if he ever actually paid anything towards the house she owns outright he might get a say, took her snacks back, and had her lovely bath. He was since giving her the silent treatment.

(Obviously the judgement was an avalanche of 'NTA and also he's abusing you', which she agreed with, and decided to kick him out, so happy ending.)

Anyway I told my husband about this and he was outraged. "I would never do that!" he told me, furious. "I would find it adorable if you had bath snacks!"

Since then, every time I try to have a bath (which I only do as a rare treat) after about ten minutes there has been an anxious scrabbling at the bathroom door.

"Elanor!" he says. "Do you have bath snacks? Do you need anything?"

My answer is irrelevant. He brings me wine and poptarts. Now I have bath snacks. I'm a bath snacks person. Last time he was literally sleeping on the sofa when I went for the bath. Somehow this still happened. I now have an eager bathroom butler. How did this happen. I have never been so decadent yet bewildered.

some asshole: tries to control his wife by withholding bath snacks

i think as adults it’s our responsibility to be nice to kids and treat them with the respect we wish we got at that age and im not kidding or exaggerating in the least

i walk a fine line between “i’m asexual and i hate how much the world revolves around sex” and “sex is way too stigmatized and people should be able to be more open about it if they want to”

Look. I understand why y'all are mad about AI. But I'm telling you, you've got to find a different way to get out your frustrations than resorting to mocking people for not being able to do something. There are better ways to make your point than pointing and laughing and declaring "People who can't do things for themselves are shitstains on society!" Because that? Smacks of ableism.

I get that y'all think you're doing this from a good place. But remember when Trump first got elected and everyone retaliated by making jokes about his weight? And all kinds of fat people came along being like "Maybe you're not making the joke about us, maybe you're making it for a good reason, but we still hear you. We still understand how you feel about us." Yeah. Disabled people hear how you joke about people who "can't do anything."

The message a lot of you are sending with your anti-AI messages right now really smacks of, "You're worthless if you don't provide to society, and people who can't do things for themselves deserve to be laughed at." I know you think it's funny when applied to tech bros, but here's a shocking fact for you: A lot of people actually do struggle with tasks as "simple" as making a grocery list! It doesn't mean that they're immediately relying on AI to do that for them, and it doesn't mean they're less of a person just because they can't do this thing that seems simple to you!

And if your response to this is an angry "Well, I'm disabled, so-" Then my response is that I'm sorry. I'm so sorry you have to live with that voice in your head every single day screaming at you that you're not doing enough. I've lived with that voice my whole life too, and it hurts so, so much every single day. But that voice isn't right. Just because it's screaming so loudly inside your own head doesn't mean you should give its voice even more weight by projecting it into the world.

People are worth more than what they can do.

I understand more and more things about cisgender men the longer I’m on testosterone. I know why teenage boys use so much axe now. I understand the crying thing. I know why they accidentally break things. I know why they wear shorts in the snow. I know why so many of them don’t use washcloths. I see everything.

Okay. Y’all want explainations? I’ll tell you all the things.

  • Testosterone makes you warm. With young men especially it can actually get really uncomfortable while their testosterone levels are at their peak. Often times coats and winter pants will keep in all their heat and it gets uncomfortable. So it makes sense to pick a part of the body to be exposed to help them stay cool. The legs tend to be the least uncomfortable part of the body to feel cold on. The arms are uncomfortable, the face hurts when it gets cold, and the torso is where all the important stuff is. It doesn’t actually hurt that much to have your lower legs exposed and there’s no important organs there so that’s what they go with to keep themselves from overheating in their winter jackets. Along this same vein, they might take their shirts off to jog or just have a naked torso in general during the summer because they’re in more danger of overheating than estrogen dominant people. Older men, children, and estrogen dominant people tend to do this stuff less because they have less testosterone and are therefore colder.
  • The axe thing is because of testosterone as well. Early on in puberty especially and into adulthood as well boys and men will stink no matter how hard they try. People often complain about how men don’t shower enough and while there is some truth to that testosterone makes you sweaty and it makes your smell last longer. It doesn’t smell worse than women’s BO, but it is harder to get rid of and easier to get. Before I started taking T I could get away with taking a shower every other day or even every three days. Now I have to take a shower every day. And some days when I shower, put on deodorant, put body spray on my clothes, avoid heavy physical activity, I still end up smelling awful. I just smell bad and there’s only so much I can do about it and that bottle of axe starts looking really tempting.
  • With crying? Testosterone just makes you cry less. You still feel all the same emotions. You just don’t cry as much. Men are often socialized to not cry, yes, but even those who haven’t been taught that still cry less. That’s just how testosterone works. They hit puberty and then it’s just harder to cry. It doesn’t necessarily mean they feel less than estrogen dominant people or that they’re repressed. They just have a different physical reaction to emotion.
  • They accidentally break things because testosterone makes it easier to gain muscle. Sometimes you even do it without meaning to. I already accidentally grabbed or slammed things too hard. Now I have to consciously be gentle. Some people forget about being gentle for a split second. Then things break. Sometimes I look at my hands now like what the hell did I just do. Relearning how to know my own strength. It’s a learning process.
  • The thing where some men don’t use washcloths and use their hands or a bar of soap instead isn’t because they’re lazy. It’s because they’re covered in hair and the washcloth pulls at it. It’s really uncomfortable actually.

WOW THAT IS AWESOME INFO

This sounds like spiderman finding his superpowers

God, I love that comparison.

Op have you felt the urge to slap the top of the doorframe yet?

Avatar
ghostkid-reimagined

OKAY I REALLY WANNA KNOW THAT TOO WHY DO THEY DO THAT???

That one is to test how tall they’re getting. Men are on average six inches taller than women and it’s fun when you get really tall and can reach stuff you never could before. Once they’re done growing it’s either to demonstrate how tall they are to other people or just because it’s fun. Jumping is fun and slapping the doorframe demonstrates both your height and how high you can jump, or if you’re so tall you don’t need to jump. Hitting stuff is fun too when nobody gets hurt from it. I did that even before I started T lol. I stopped growing before I started T but I still do it because it’s fun. It’s just one of life’s little joys. For a lot of people it also just becomes a habit. Like tapping on a desk when you’re thinking or giving your friend a high five whenever you pass them.

wow I appreciate knowing this so much

Most people: “Huh, looks like it’s about impossible to guess the difference between biological and socialized gender behaviors. Let’s just pick a few semi-plausible generalizations and shame everyone who–”

Trans people on hormone therapy, finally in a culture that sometimes lets them talk a little bit: “OH HEY SO IT’S STILL ALL SUBJECTIVE AND COMPLICATED, BUT WE HAVE SOME VERY PRECISE POINTS OF INFORMATION FOR YOU.”

Most people: “Oh shit that’s useful.”
