FIC: as best you know this long, long road
Fandom: Arcane: League of Legends Pairing: Cait/Vi Rating: Explicit Tags: Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Road Trips, Car Sex, Angst with a Happy Ending, Grief/Mourning, Nonbinary Vi Summary: After the death of her mother, Caitlyn Kiramman is moving from San Francisco to Washington D.C. What was meant to be a solo road trip takes a turn when she picks up Vi, a hitchhiking busker who shares a grief similar to Caitlyn.
If the picnic table was a stage, then the sunlight was the spotlight. Caitlyn watched like she would a show. She could picture some crappy venue attempting to wash out the dramatic color of their hair, but there was no stopping it. The color glowed like a red dawn—sailor's warning—and only got brighter as they dropped to the last line of the second verse. Another launch. Another chorus. Goosebumps rose out of Caitlyn's arms. Her reservoir of emotions sloshed in her chest, but they didn't spill over. The spell was nearly broken at the bridge and its dramatic switch in pitch. But Caitlyn felt herself tense along with the music. The guitarist didn't look at her for the final chorus, as though too focused on their own troubles to pay their audience any mind. It was there that Caitlyn felt a kindred sadness waver in their voice. It made itself known as they wrenched a note out of the ground—the sorrow dangled like newly exposed roots. Instead of hiding it, the guitarist played with it. Something drained in Caitlyn. It was like clocking a fellow queer in the wild, finding someone who also knew loss.
