i have an OC that only has one eye, and has (basically) since birth. she runs a pirate themed boat tour, because she figures "hey, i already live in a houseboat with one eye- might as well get cash for it"

Avatar

oh my god this is brilliant and exactly what i would do in that situation hahahaha that oc is truly a work of art

Your post titled ”writing characters with one eye” came across my dashboard in a reblog, and because of the ‘omg there really is Not Any Representation of characters only having/use of one eye in media that didnt lose it in some badass way’, I’ve decided since there’s a glaring need, the main character in my wip is blind or nearly so in one eye. I hope when someone reads it one day, they’re happy someone thought to represent them in a form closer to everyday life, and that could directly be traced back to you, your words, and your fantastic blog <33

Avatar

oh my god this is so so sweet, i genuinely don’t even know what to say ahaha!

thank you so much, i’m overjoyed to hear you’ll have an mc that’s half blind and i’m sure they’re a wonderful character!! and thank you for providing some much needed representation, it’s fantastic to hear my post is actually making and impact on writers! happy writing and i hope to see your wip on the shelves one day:)

i just wanna say thank you for that great advice post! also, since you said you never saw a (non action) show with a one eyed character i just wanna recomend a favourite show of mine called Mushi-Shi. The mc has one eye and its a very chill scifi/fantasy/horror anthology series set in Japan. its based on a manga and they are identical so i also recomend the manga if you'd rather read something

Avatar

ooh that sounds interesting!! i’ll definitely look into it! thank you for the recommendation!! :DD

Hi! I’m writing my first novel and the love interest only has one eye, but I’m unsure what accommodations she’d have around her house, particularly to do with depth perception. If you could give me any idea of things like that, I’d really appreciate it!

Avatar

oh this is so exciting to hear! honestly, i don’t think there would be too many adjustments made to accommodate to lack of depth perception, as over time you become used to the lay out of the house and where things are in accordance to yourself! but being in unfamiliar places might call for a few more incidents. i hope this helps and happy writing! :)

Hi, I just saw your post about writing characters with one eye! Thank you for providing this info to the public :) I saw in your post that you haven't read a series (or maybe it was general media) where a character had one eye. Idk if it'd be the type you're into but may I recommend A Darker Shade of Magic (+ series)? It's not necessarily revealed till later in the book (if I recall correctly) but half of the main duo has a prosthetic eye and she's a kickass. It's a cool series with a cool concept (if you like magic and world-traveling you'd like it!) I haven't finished the series so I'm not sure what happens in the end but I've really enjoyed the first two books thus far.

Avatar

oh my god this sounds amazing and totally up my alley!!! thank you for the recommendation and letting me know about it!! :D

I hope you don't mind me asking, but do you sleep with your prosthetic eye in?

Avatar

i don’t mind! i do tend to sleep with my prosthetic in! there’s times where i want to sleep with it out (especially during the spring/when my allergies make my eyes itchy) but my ocd doesn’t allow it as i tend to worry about hygiene and my open eye socket (but there’s no problem with sleeping with it out, just my overthinking)

heya i’ve been criminally inactive lately but want to try interact more since people are still spreading my one-eyed wonder post and asking lots of super valid and interesting questions!! please keep sending them in and i’ll try to respond to some older ones and newer ones as they appear!

thanks so much for helping me spread awareness to other one-eyes wonders out there! i’ve had a follow up post for the original lined up for a while, and i hope to get it out soon! :)

I was super happy to see your post about characters with one eye in writing, as I plan to have a character like that in my latest project! I'm just curious, would it be considered rude to have a scene where this character takes out their prosthetic to scare the other characters, like you said you've done? And if it's not... How do you go about taking it out? Thank you in advance!

Avatar

no this is actually so realistic!! when i was younger my (older) sister hated seeing me with my eye out (i guess who thought it was gross/gory so i’d take it out to piss her off all the time so it’s definitely realistic and not offensive at all!

Hey, thank you for the post about characters with one eye! If you’re still comfortable answering questions, I was wondering about when you stopped outgrowing prosthetics. Your post said you got your current prosthetic at 13/14, but how old were you when you noticed you needed a larger size? Did you get it right when you realized you needed it? Before you got your current eye, how noticeable to you was it that you needed a larger one? Was it still comfortable, or did it cause problems?

A character of mine lost his left eye to unilateral glaucoma (Chandler’s syndrome) when he was 18. He’s 21 when the book starts and I’m wondering if his prosthetic would still fit correctly. My assumption has been that it wouldn’t be a comfortable fit, partly because I assumed his head was still growing. (If nothing else, it’s a low-technology setting and glassblowers didn’t have much experience making prosthetics, so it’s probably not a perfect fit.)

On a related note, you clarified that your eye is plastic, not glass. What are some reasons you use plastic instead of glass? If you decided to use glass instead, what would change?

Thank you again for sharing your experiences, it really helps a lot! Details like not wanting to walk with someone on your right or producing more tears on your left are really helpful.

Avatar

i’m so so happy my post was able to help and thanks @anothersolarpunk for the questions!! i’m always open to answering questions, and these are some really good ones!!

kind of ironic because i just saw my ocularist (the person that makes my prosthetics) today! incase this is helpful (despite your setting and characters situation being different) most people see their ocularist once a year! this year was a check up and polish (he fully cleans and polishes the prosthetic then makes sure my socket n everything looks good) the appointment is also to see if i’m in need of a new prosthetic!

*insert awesome segway into your questions*

i didn’t get my first prosthetic when i was around one (my eye was removed 30 days after birth, and the socket was left empty and covered with patches as it healed). since then i’ve gone through maybe four or five prosthetics?

when your head grows, as does your eye socket, and it’s mostly noticeable in the inner corner by your tear duct when looking closely at the fake eye. physically, it’s actually not too noticeable. i never realized why i needed a new one until my ocularist told me it was necessary because it was getting to be too small. but for your character it might be more noticeable since your mc is older, but not incredibly noticeable? your body stops growing at a certain point and that point is around your early twenties, so it would make sense if it fit better!

it’s also possible to have extensions for prosthetics. my current prosthetic has a small flesh-colored extension on the side near my tear duct that filled in some space where you could see into my socket when looking from a certain direction. this was an easy fix since the prosthetic was relatively new! and it would be easier to add that if your mc’s eye is made of glass!

plastic or something of that sort is typically preferred over glass because humans are clumsy as heck and glass is just as breakable. as well as being for safety, plastic is apparently easier to work with when molding and painting! glass is probable, especially in certain settings, but plastic is a better option if provided.

i was a dumb child, so i would constantly take my prosthetic out, throw it around, play with it, and even chew on it (gross, i know) and plastic was a better option over glass for those exact reasons. even now i’m still clumsy and won’t say i haven’t dropped my prosthetic before lmao

i truly hope this helps and sorry if it took a while to respond! my inbox notifs are broken and i need to work on checking them more regularly!! thanks for the ask !!! :)

If you do know, would someone who is largely(not fully, but largely) blind in one eye have an easier or harder time with depth perception? Would it kinda-sorta mess up their whole sight? And would they need glasses?

Asking because my sorta main character has a scar on one of their eyes and can barely see out of it anymore, and i wanna be correct with my writing of them :3

Avatar

my notifs are broken but thank you for your ask!!

this ask has quite frankly stumped me a bit, but i’ll give it a shot! take everything i say with a grain of salt, and i highly recommend looking to other one eyed wonders out there!

i would think it won’t affect the character as much, and i think that tunnel vision would be more realistic, seeing as it tends to be a lead up before full blindness. however, i haven’t done proper research and don’t know if tunnel vision can occur from anything outside of medical causation.

glasses are only really used for prescription needs or protection! so glasses are only necessary in either of those situations!

it would likely not mess up their sight. it would take a while to get used to, but would eventually become their new normal. for this i recommend looking to people who were born with two eyes and lost one later in life.

hope this helped, despite not really having first hand experience with any of your questions! :)

writing realistic siblings (revisited)

hi! i already made a post about this, but i’m here to revisit the lovely writing domain of ✨siblings✨

i myself am the middle child with one older and one younger sibling, so i can only really speak from that perspective, but this is more generalized!

realistic siblings:

  • have a constantly fluctuating love hate relationship (but the hate is never true hate, more annoyance, frustration, etc.)
  • share secrets (unless one of them is a blabber mouth, then the other would carefully avoid sharing certain secrets [after an incident, obviously])
  • do anything in their power to press each other buttons and annoy the crap out of each other
  • talk about their parents (whether it be good or bad, it’s bound to happen)
  • remember embarrassing things that happened to the other and share them at the most inappropriate and embarrassing times
  • share brain cells. no matter their relationship, they tend to understand each other extremely well and also share levels of stupidity
  • have inside jokes and make fun of people together
  • have dumb nicknames for each other (i.e., any name including but not limited to: butt, ass, loser, weirdo, idiot, etc.)
  • have affectionate nicknames for each other (i call my brother bubba)
  • would never call each other a deterrent of sis or bro because that’s cringe and asshat is a much nicer option

Stop demonizing wolves.

Like seriously. Wolves we see in movies and media… Not how wolves behave. At all.

1. A lone wolf is cool, strong and, something to strive to be. FALSE.

Lone wolves have either lost, left or been pushed out of a pack. They are likely starving, lonely and/or looking for a new family or mate. Wolves are highly social and need companionship. They don’t want to be alone.

2. An alpha wolf is the biggest, baddest wolf in the pack who fights for their position. FALSE.

There are TWO Alpha wolves in a pack. They are mom and dad, the oldest and usually the smartest cause they have experienced the most. They are usually more timid and less likely to put themselves in danger because they are the only wolves in the pack that breed. If they die, the rest of the family will likely loose their way and eventually break apart.

Biggest wolves are usually the ‘betas’ who are children of the alphas (cause most everyone in the pack are puppies from mom and dad) and are generally more likely to investigate.

3. Wolves are brave and will hunt down intruders to there territory. FALSE.

Wolves are HUGE scaredy cats. They are naturally neophobic after about 6months to a year. Something new and different shows up in there territory, they are likely to avoid or keep their distance. They are NOT going to attack unless food or puppies are involved. They are great at communicating and you will know you need to back off long before you are in danger. This also means that no, that ‘wolf dog’ is not going to be a loyal and protective pet.

4. Wolves adopt. This is true.

Wolves are puppy crazy. Like they love puppies (for the most part) and its very common for packs to adopt puppies into their family. No issues with breeding cause, only mom and dad are allowed to do that. this is a way that puppies breed in captivity have been introduced to the wild, by being left near known nursing females and the pack will often come find them and bring them home. You want to known how much they love puppies? Wolves will give up their own meals to make sure puppies get fed first. Wolves can gorge themselves on up to 20lb of food and have been seen regurgitating for puppies and pregnant mothers.

Please stop demonizing wolves.

Like look at these idiots. I love them so much. Stand up too fast and you scary. That thing that touched the ground, its mine now. They want your shirt and you say no so they growl, tickle their tongue and they are just like WHY!? Trust a growling wolf way more than a dog any day. (All these guys live at a sanctuary for captive born and rescued wolves)

One of the reasons why dogs were so easy to domesticate is because the structure of a wolf pack and the structure of a human family are so similar.

The “alpha wolf” myth is, also, toxic and harmful and used to support nasty stuff in human society.

A wolf pack is a family. It’s mom, dad, the kids who haven’t left home yet and are helping look after the younger kids.

Wild wolves are hard to observe because they hear us before we hear them and tend to slip away. I’ve had the great privilege of seeing a wild wolf precisely once in my life.

Oh, and you cannot mistake a wolf for A. a dog or B. a coyote.

I got to pretty much directly compare wolf and coyote.

In addition to being quite a bit smaller, coyotes tend to bounce and cover ground that way, their action is more elevated. They’re very upright.

Wolves move closer to the ground and tend to glide.

MAYBE you might mistake a stationary coyote for a wolf, but when they move the difference is quite stark.

Huskies look nothing like wolves…

i want to pet a wolf SO BADLY

Humans about 30,000 years ago had the same thought! And here we are

Also even if they were huge scary beasts, they should be respected as important ecological forces just like bears. Lots of people are irrationally afraid of wolves like they are afraid of spiders, despite the fact that wolves are probably even more harmless than spiders because they can run away faster

“my child is completely fine” your child’s favourite wilbur soot video is ‘terraforming the moon in minecraft’
