✨ for all of the newcomers, welcome! in case you're interested, here's a quick list of all the fics i've written recently :) ✨

rookanis fics

  • two crows, one dagger - after lucanis gifts rook de riva a dagger, they spar, and he learns the sentimental meaning behind its new name
  • a lesson in electricity - this time, lucanis spars with mage!rook who is distrustful of him due to his reputation. they find common ground & flirt, ofc
  • by blood & thread - a longer one than the first two; lucanis stitches up crow!rook after a near-fatal battle. (suuuper angsty. takes place directly after ‘blood of arlathan')
  • poison vials & morning coffee - a short drabble/mini-fic about lucanis expressing his love for crow!rook (pronoun neutral) through acts of service and gift-giving!

solrook fics

  • how far thou art fallen from heaven - an on-going multi-chapter fic; when rook first ends up in the regret-prison with solas after a nightmare, he taunts her, and she responds in kind. one way or another, solas is going to realize: varric chose rook to stop him for a reason. what he isn’t prepared for is how his enemy makes him feel. has the dread wolf finally found someone to abandon his plight for? (spoiler alert: the answer is no.) a true enemies to lovers tale.

solavellan fics

  • what we leave behind - lavellan’s world first unravels when solas reveals the truth about her vallaslin. it’s been ten years, and still, she runs to him when the skies tear open again. bare-faced and broken, she pursues the one person she can’t stop loving, even as he destroys her. (angsty as hell, with a side of cosmic heartbreak. there is no happy ending here.)

✨so, yeah! follow if you're looking for more! :) ✨

✨ lol wrote some more!! ✨

neverook fics (drabbles)

  • the sound of honesty - based off a prompt from the febuwhump project. after consulting with solas, an agitated rook runs straight to neve for comfort.
  • cold hands - hardened! neve tries to heal an injured rook after a battle, but the healing spell just won't come.

more solrook (drabbles)

  • the price we pay - after a successful solas succeeds in tearing down the veil, he soon realizes that the price of his victory is too heavy to bear.
  • a poetic-y drabble - about solas and rook as the creator and created. (based off the yahweh/job biblical myth)

Thinking about Thom Rainier being integrated into Clan Lavellan after the defeat of Corypheus.

Working extra hard to be useful, to show them that he can be trusted, that he's worthy of living among them.

Staying up all night repairing aravels even though no one asked him to.

Working with the clan's war leader to teach the hunters techniques he learned fighting in the Grand Tourney so they can better understand how to fight any humans that might march on them - just in case.

Carving a halla horn headdress for Lavellan to wear at their bonding ceremony, and it being so beautiful that other young brides (and grooms) beg him to make them headpieces for their own ceremonies.

Becoming known as a craftsman and being asked to carve ornaments for celebrations, canes and other mobility aids for cherished elders, and griffons for all the babes he regaled with stories of noble warden heroes flying in on winged steeds to save all peoples, be they human, dwarven, or elven.

Being at the center of a cuddle pile with a gaggle of children cuddling in close for warmth, and being overcome with emotion when the parents of said children don't even think twice about it because they know their children are safe with him.

Letting the children put flowers in his beard and wearing every flower crown that comes his way with pride.

Agonizing over his place in the clan, whether or not he has any right to take up the space he does, until one morning the elders present him with a handmade blanket made from the fur of the great bear that will be nourishing the clan through the long winter.

Being gifted an elven name that he uses in alongside (and never in place of) Thom Rainier.

Not being allowed to take vallaslin on his face, but being given a tattoo on his body that marks him as kin.

Finally, perhaps for the first time in his adult life, having a home.

And after being alone for so long, waking up every day surrounded by people who see him for exactly who he is and love him anyway.

Okay @broodwoof has this really great meta that I tried RB-ing with this lil essay earlier and then tumblr ate it which I'm taking as a sign from the servers to make my own damn post (sorry if the RB emerges from the ether broodwoof!)

When you look at Mythal's design in relation to Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain there's a lot the design team did to really push their characterization and create a very visible tension in the Evanuris. All three of their designs are really thoughtful and have an intentional visual language!

Starting with Mythal, the focal area in her design is her face. The highest area of contrast when we look at her is the glowing eyes, and the direction of her headpiece points down into her face. The only part of her 'look' that's really moving with her is her hair, framing her face. The flow of shapes in her design also pulls our eye inward and down. It's primarily downward shapes along the midline, its grounding, it's pulling us towards her. She isn't trying to be something she's not, she's sturdy and grounded in herself. She's distant but she isn't trying to put herself above us either. Mythal doesn't feel like our equal, but she doesn't feel entirely unreachable either.

Elgar'nan reeeeally contrasts this. Where Mythal flows inward and down in this loud self assuredness, he flows up and out and away.

Elgar'nan's shapes are all wide and flow up and away from him in these big, dramatic sweeping motions. His design never wants your eye to rest on his face, it's unconsciously steering your attention away, you aren't even really aware that your ficus is being guided up. It makes it hard to "hold his gaze". You feel like you're always looking up at him. The focal area in his design is wide and doesn't comfortably sit in your vision. The design is imposing. It's the image he's trying to project. He's always in postures like this too, wide, flowing the eye upward, imposing. It matches the shape of his outfit that forms these upward arrows.

Then there's Ghilan'nain! She's got a lot in common with Elgar'nan visually, but her own unique twist that's different and interesting. Where Elgar'nan and Mythal have very clean shapes, Ghilan'nain is chaotic. Her body contorts, her flow isn't a clean line but rather a tortuous path, which reinforces some of our impression of her, she's experimented on herself. Here is the visual manifestation of Body Horror. She also has shapes that flow up AND down in close proxomity to one another which creates visual stress or tension (red for flow, yellow for tension below). This is also the widest part of her. Like Elgar'nan it's an imposing shape, but it's additionally a tense one! Visual stress like this tends to draw focus. But then we have the tentacles...

The tentacles REALLY complicate her focal areas in a fun way. Motion is THE MOST POWERFUL ATTENTION CUE, it's the thing our brains are most primed to attend to. And she has all of these tentacles writhing arou d her, moving about and drawing focus. She's chaotic. You don't know where to look, but at the same time, that visual stress is almost daring you to look. Like Elgar'nan she doesn't comfortably fit in our vision, she's imposing!

So the visual language in these three characters is different but usess the same tools (shape and flow) to convey a lot about these characters at a glance.

How grounded Mythal feels is narratively important! Especially given that the Evanuris are (or were, rip queen) her peers. If Mythal can be this small (albeit terrifying and powerful) woman, maybe the Evanuris aren't insurmountable. In putting Mythal within Rook's reach visually, there's an inference about Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain by association too.

tldr, these character designs say so much.

i thinkkkkk. i think. rook and solas should cuddle by a peaceful, glassy lake. and solas could weave a wildflower crown for rook to wear, and then rook could cradle solas in their arms as solas gently floats atop the surface of the water, and then they could kiss with the barest of touches, and then rook could just hold solas under and drown him
