what's the most entertaining task from Taskmaster that you'd like to watch a friend do?
bonus points if it's actually feasible to do, like it's cheap and easily accessible
provide me the season and episode it occurred in please
Hey Mark! I'm curious. What would you say are the chances we'll see some new planeswalker types moving forward? Prior to Quint's card in LCI, I believe the last new planeswalker type introduced was Kaito back in 2022, so I'm hoping that we'll get to see some new faces added in the future. Also, as a side note, can you guys bring back the Planeswalker decks? They were what first got me into Magic and remain my favorite Magic product of all time to this day, so I was sad to see them discontinued.
There are new planeswalker characters in the pipeline. There is not any plans though to bring back planeswalker decks. Sorry.
I'd love more planeswalker decks. I think I've got all of them and it's my go to for quick Magic games with anyone. Would love to add more options to it.
Every few months I’m still reminded about Ravnica: Clue from a while back, think “That looked pretty fun and had some sweet cards, why didn’t I get it?”, Google its current price… and then remember that the decks were random boosters and you could even get multiples of the same one, and decide not to buy it all over again. I could shoehorn a question like “Did Hasbro get the message that that was a bad idea?” in here, but really I just want you to know my ongoing sadness about this otherwise cool-looking product.
We did get a lot of feedback about the unhappiness with the randomness.
That was one major factor to me not buying it. Seemed fun otherwise but if I buy a "traditional" boxed board game then it should have everything in the box. Maybe those boosters should be available separately but im not a huge fan of that either.
Zetalpa propaganda:
*stares at that part of the tarkir dargonstorm story and yells at Ugin* you were supposed to keep an eye on your brother! you fool!
When has Ugin ever been any good at keeping an eye on things that were supposed to be sealed away? Dude has a horrible track record!
The back of Ugin's fridge has a dozen Tupperware containers festering cultures of mold never seen before.
Mike Hawk, huh
Tony Hawk being like "yeah Mike Hawk is tiny"
I'm getting together with some friends next month and we've decided to turn our annual board game week into a game competition. We've got a trophy for the person who wins the most games.
We've also got a handful of medals to be awarded for other things (I think we've got enough for 4 categories). Likely by a vote just based on our personal opinions at the end of the week.
Anybody want to suggest some potential award categories?
Here's the final list of options. Let me know if this isn't a great way to get it and I can type it all out or something. I appreciate all the suggestions--I've altered some to best fit my group (and the final draft will probably be tweaked more), and if anybody else uses any of these I'd encourage them to tailor it to their specific play group.
Game categories are based mostly on what I think, with some guidance from BoardGameGeek. For example I've decided Photosynthesis, Wingspan, Agricola, and Scoville all count as nature games if I use that award.
I think some of these make more sense to award a first, second, and third place to while others don't. So some will get the medal treatment based on our votes. For some of the others I had another idea.
We're going to track and overall winner who will be crowned (probably literally) king for the year's competition. I've decided the first duty of the new king will be to award commendations at their sole discretion. Probably roll Hemingway and Ramsay into one food/drink award that's gained this way. Mills Lane will definitely get this treatment. And my hope is that if we keep this alive year after year then the king's commendations will encourage us all to be more hands on with learning rules/teaching games, and upping our culinary game.
Thanks again, I don't think I would have gotten to that without brainstorming like this.
Alright here's the final list (sans tag lines):
I bought frames in bulk so with 50 cheap frames I figured I may as well have that many awards. Hammered down 52 and cut the two I felt were least fun/useful.
Here's an example of what some of the award certificates look like (and the King/Duke here is the KoS and DoD on the list above):
The end result is a little bit shoddy with how cheap the frames are and how quickly I got this together, but it'll work. And once the awards are divvied out I'll encourage people to improve the frames they won for use next year. I also added space on the back to record who wins which award each year so we can have a record well into the future.

"...if you want to make a comparison using “Un-card” as a descriptor for something other than actual Un-cards it might not go the way you hope."
Thank you for replying to my post. Are you saying that if a black-border card feels like an Un-card to a player, that player's perception or feeling is somehow not valid or valuable? I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just hoping for clarification.
I’m saying there’s better language to describe “this card feels off to me” than “this feels like an Un-card”. My issue isn’t with your feelings. It’s with your language. In other words, don’t use “Un-card” as a derogatory.
@ordinaryotter678 Reading your original ask my first thought was also that you were complaining about Cactuar. Mark tries to answer a lot of questions pretty quickly so I'd guess he likewise read a negative connotation in it. Just for ease of reference, the ask was:
I may be wrong, but I think the concern with Jumbo Cactuar is that it feels like an Un-card, even though it works in the rules. Un-sets have a cartoonish tone and aesthetic which makes them feel different. This is also a complaint by some about Aetherdrift – that the tone is more cartoonish and feels out of place in the Multiverse.
I've bolded the parts here that I think seem to convey an overall negative opinion of not just Cactuar but of un-cards or cards that feel that way showing up in black border.
I think a more effective tack with Mark would just be to let him know that a card (or set or theme or whatever) is sillier than what you'd like to see in Magic. I think he'll still let you know they think silliness has a place in Magic but it won't come with an aside about what seems like an attack on a group of cards/sets that he is the champion of.
Have you considered getting an rss feed reader? It is probably the best way to really be sure youve read everything on a blog. I set up one a couple weeks ago for yt videos and its been wonderful
I should. I've definitely considered it before but then it's just always bottom of the list of things for me to do. Thanks for the suggestion.
Why are there so few colorless enchantments? Aside from devoid, the eldrazi kindred enchantments and enchantment lands there are only 2 colorless enchantments ever, both from MKM.
Because one of the key qualifiers for enchantments is they are colored.
Specifically this helps differentiate them from artifacts. Artifacts can have colored mana now for balancing, but that was a hard learned lesson that came about because of game design needs. Making some enchantments colorless just to do so isn't a good reason to do them. There has to be a need that fulfills in a set.
