30 never looked so good...

dear usamerican high schoolers looking for a way to resist fascism: sit through the pledge of allegiance.

no getting up. no looking at the flag.

everyone will be looking at you. you'll be sweating like a fucking hippopotamus. your teacher will sternly tell you to get up. you'll feel stupid and that maybe its not worth it because you're just a kid in a classroom. but I'm here to remind you that there are no real life consequences to detention. there are however real life consequences to resisting a thoughtless performance of nationalism.

not to talk tough but i have sat through every pledge of allegiance in my life, and that includes the bush administration's hyper-patriotic war on terror.

you can NOT be compelled to say the pledge, and that also means you can't be given the 'choice' of doing it or taking a punishment. being sent into the hall is a grey area.

if you are punishing for refusing, parents or a more sympathetic teacher (like say a history or english teacher) can step in to intercede with the principal. do not be afraid to escalate.

it is critical now of all times that you PRACTICE civil disobedience, starting small, sticking to it, and working up, this will help you learn how very much disobedience you can actually get away with in this life, which is actually a hell of a lot.

Hi kids!

I did this in the 1990s. I started in elementary school and continued until my last day of high school. All because one day my mom sat me down and explained what the words and actions meant and then asked me if I believed in it. I didn’t, so I stopped pledging and sat down.

You will be treated like the worst piece of shit for doing this by a variable collection of clowns. Teachers, admin, other studentsβ€”somebody will try all sorts of ways to try to punish you. This includes but is not limited to calling your parents, detention, singling you out with snide comments, bullying, etc. You will need to learn your rights, especially state/local rights, and you will need to learn how to express your freedom of beliefs and stance clearly. It won’t necessarily stop the clowns with their harassment (but sometimes it does), but it helps that you have a clear message so that everyone understands that you’re serious and that you know why you’re doing this.

That being said, there will be others who support you. Others who might even start sitting down, themselves. You don’t have to set out to convert, because it’s ok to do this for yourself. But anyone who follows your lead is one more person that much more free from the bullshit.

After going to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, I stopped standing for the pledge of allegiance in school and assemblies. Felt weird at first, but don’t stand up for the pledge until this country does right by its people.

I know it’s not hard to point out reactionaries hypocrisy when it comes to like safe spaces or hug boxes or whatever but genuinely how much of an echo chamber do you have to exist in for you to think this is a reasonable thing to say
