In a lot of ways this is going to be the grumpier, more ramble-y, spoilerific cousin to my other blog. In a lot of ways it won't. It hasn't been anyway.Awesome avatar made by borkysnow.

I got my gallbladder removed yesterday and being surrounded by people from all social classes, genders and races reminded how much of a monster you’d have to be to think universal healthcare only benefits “leaches” or whatever.

I was put through a bunch of tests for months to find out what was causing my pain and nausea, I got cheap medicine to manage my symptoms while I waited for my operation date (I could have waited under a month if I had taken the offer of getting operated in a different city but decided to wait instead) I got a bunch of free pills and injections in preparation for the operation, I got operated, I was sent to recovery where they helped manage my pain with morphine followed by anti-nausea, they gave me food for my blood sugar, information and phone numbers to call if I got nervous and finally sent me home with more morphine pills.

I’m far from a “leach” yet there’s no way I would have been able to pay for all that here and now. That’s why it’s good actually to pay taxes for this sort of thing because not only is it cheaper than a private insurance but it’s incredibly heartwarming to be surrounded by people you know you also helped get the help they needed.

The whole thing from the first day I called my doctor about pain and nausea to me sitting here with no gallbladder took less than a year and the only thing I had to pay for out of pocket was some cheap medicine and I’m currently on sick leave which I’m also getting paid for.

I promise you, a bit of socialism isn’t so scary.

Most anti phone advice is so inane and regurgitated to me but one thing I’ve been thinking about for days is “social media is okay, but the real danger comes in when you think your phone should be your go to during your limited pockets of leisure” like that’s literally the truest thing ever

It really is true that after a long shift or a hard study session or a tiring workout the first thing I think to do is doom scroll to “reward” myself………. But as much as I try to combat my screen I’ve never truly delved into why my phone should be my go to during my downtime. Like why is it the reward . Why is it not taking a nap. Or getting a treat. Or calling a friend . Or even reading a book. It’s like I do those things w the idea in mind that that’s when I’m “on” but what if they rly should be my downtime rewards instead of phone time

And this comes from someone who does not necessarily think social media is the devil bc I totally understand why people use it and how it makes connecting easier…… but I see older patients all the time and it’s so striking to me how they don’t have attention issues and how their reward system is wired so differently. My 52 year old boss rewards herself for an 8 hour work day by taking a run after work. Like immediately after work. She does have a phone, and she does use it, but it’s not her reward during downtime at all. She does not need a phone break in between things, because those things are what nourish her. And that’s just fascinating to me bc for my generation a peek at their phone is the ultimate reward

LAST THING bc i feel like if this reaches more people they’ll be like ummm reading or talking to a friend arent downtime activities and like okay that’s so fair……. I think the whole point is finding a default downtime activity that feels right for *you* while also not taxing you mentally. Like this is not me saying go full blackout on your phone. Also it’s just true that doom scrolling is not as passive as people think it is (I literally do it too) and your brain is still burning out from taking in so much at once, so investigating if it’s the holy grail “brain off” activity really is valid

me when i cant comprehend that different continents have different animals

the rest of the paragraph that was cut out in that screenshot literally explains the reasons behind the easter bilby and bluntly theyre minimising the impact that wild rabbits have had as an introduced species in our ecosystem.

the easter bibly was an ingenious campaign that builds in social awareness and change to an ongoing annual tradition without detracting from what that tradition represents. the choice behind it was intentional

saying Australians "don't like bunnies" because of ecological damage is like saying Americans "don't like rabies" because of the health risks. They're a major problem and the Easter Bilby rules.

Embarrassing to have worked at an Outback Steakhouse as long as me and not know this.

This response is absolutely sending me

Outback Steakhouse is as representative of Australian culture and cuisine as Taco Bell is representative of Mexican culture and cuisine. Outback Steakhouse doesn't even have any bush tucker or unique things like balmain bugs why would working there and not knowing jackshit about Australia be "embarrassing"

people be normal about Australia challenge (impossible)

This is a draft logo I drew ages ago and will be polished. Getting that out of the way. I like the direction but everything is second or third draft.

I'm posting this now because I need to get off the "I AM MAD" train and posting art is a great way to do that.

Yesterday I talked about moving away from Shopify onto another platform, which has begun, and is going well.

In some ways it is frustrating (expect an intense blog post at some point, please ignore it unless you expressly enjoy watching me grow increasingly angry)

And

Moving away from Shopify into a system that allows me to build non-linear art projects has awoken old things that got shelved because they didn't fit into the Shopify ecosystem.

The Fantastically Useful Bureau of Useless Fantastical Information

This is going to be an ongoing, real world data driven system asking the big questions. Such as, "What do gelatinous cubes taste like? What do mermaid heartbeats sound like?"

The goal is to have open questions with calculated data from the real world published in such a way that you can refer to it in your academic (or "academic") papers, blog posts, games, whatever.

Rigorous science about mythological creatures gathering information from real people and published in a public format with the goal of becoming a reputable source of factually gathered coherent nonsense.

I will tear reality apart brick by brick in order to build my monument to myth and madness until it is complete or I am dead.

My final mortal breath will be exhaled with either a joke or a laugh.

margaritaville, the song, and margaritaville, the restaurant and resort empire, fascinate me because the former seems to warn against the lifestyle that the latter perpetuates

HE BROKE THE RECORD

Senator Cory Booker just broke the all-time record for the longest Senate floor speech, speaking for over 24 hours without a pause (no food, no bathroom breaks, only water to drink) as a protest against Trump and Musk and what they're doing.

The previous record was set in 1957, when Strom Thurmond spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes protesting the Civil Rights Act.

Senator Booker has blown past that record, currently at 25 hours and still speaking as of 8 pm local time. Respect.

shoutout to my brother for setting me up for this

guys if you keep reblogging this i’m gonna have to tell him it blew up on tumblr and my credibility from this comeback will instantly plummet

oh no this is still getting notes

this broke 10,000 notes so

results are in. no I can’t tell him about this I can’t do it

I’ve made a mistake

well he believes me now!
