Earlier this year, The Committee to Protect Journalists, did a great piece on Israel's deadly pattern of killing Journalists and how no one has been held responsible.

The “American Dyatlov Pass” Incident : Case of the Missing Five (1978)

(This is probably one of my favorite unexplained mysteries/deaths. It’s a bit longer than our usual posts and there is a link to a very detailed article that was in the Washington Post below, I suggest reading that for more detail and consider this post an abridged version of the bizarre case.)

Two hours before midnight on Feb. 24 1978, when the basketball game ended at the California State University at Chico, five young men from the flatlands 50 miles to the south climbed into a turquoise and white 1969 Mercury Montego and drove out of the parking lot. This would be the last time anyone saw these five young men alive.

The boys never returned home and the families (all five still lived at home) began their search. At first, the police didn’t take much interest in the case, but when the parents revealed that three of the five men had mental health issues, the police took more of an interest.  On Tuesday, Feb. 28, the police found Madruga’s Mercury, and from that day on nothing they found, nothing anybody told them, seemed to make any sense.

The Delphi Murders

Feb 14th of 2017, the bodies of Abigail Williams (age 13) and Liberty German (age 14) were discovered near the Monon High Bridge Trail (Delphi ,Indiana). The girls had disappeared in the same trail the day before.

On the 13th around 1:30 pm, Liberty’s older sister, Kelsi dropped the girls off at a trail-head on County Road 300 North, west of the Hoosier Heartland Highway. The girls were reported missing at 5:30 pm when they failed to show up at the end of the trail. Their bodies were found at noon the next day.

The police released an image of a suspect seen around the trail at the same time the girls disappeared (left). The image shows a white male with his hands in his pockets while walking. He is wearing jeans, a navy blue jacket and a hat. A few days later the police reveal that Liberty recorded a video/audio of the suspect on her cell phone. The recording, which is released to the pubic, appears to capture a man’s voice saying, “Down the hill.”

Having released this information to the public, the police get thousands of tips. Through the course of 2+ years the investigation goes in many directions but no one is charged in the murder of these two girls. April of 2019, the authorities release new audio, video and a sketch (right) of the person they believe is responsible. There have been many tips that have come in but this case still remains unsolved. The police and FBI have had numerous suspects, most recently (July 2019), authorities announced that Paul Etter was being considered a suspect in the murders after receiving a tip. Etter was wanted for the kidnapping and rape of a 26 year old woman on June 22 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. Five days later, Etter was surrounded by police, and after a five hour stand-off, Etter killed himself.

The Bleeding House on Fountain Drive

One day in Sept of 1987, Atlanta Georgia resident, Minnie Winston awoke to find dark red splotches of blood in several rooms (on both the walls and floor) of her house. There was blood on the bathroom’s lower walls, the kitchen, living room, bedroom, hallways, and basement. Blood was also found in a crawlspace and under a television set.

The police came, collected samples of the blood and sent them to the state crime lab. It was concluded that the blood samples belonged to a human but the police had no idea where it came from. It didn’t belong to either Minnie or her husband. There was no evidence of a break-in or wrong doing. The couple had never witnessed anything like this before and were terrified. Given the amount of blood they found, it appeared to have been placed, or dripped, on the spot from a very lively source. In other words, someone inside their home had been bleeding profusely. To this day, there has been no explanation of how the blood got there and who it belonged to. The source of the blood was never found.

Antwerp Diamond Heist of 2003

Dubbed “the heist of the century,” the Antwerp Diamon Heist remains unsolved to this day. The heist involved the taking of loose diamonds, gold, and other jewelry valued at more than $100 million. It is considered the largest diamond heist in history.

It was housed in a vault considered to be one of the safest vaults in the world which had numerous secturity mechanisms.

A man named Leonardo Notarbartolo (man suspected of doing this) had rented a sparsely furnished office for approximately $700 per month in the diamond centre three years prior to the robbery which gave him 24hr access to the vault. He posed as an Italian diamond merchant in order to gain creditbility.

After the robbery Leonardo and his crew stole the security footage so no one really knows how they pulled this off or who the rest of Leonardo’s team was. 123/160 safety deposit boxes (which were made of steel and copper and had both a key and combination lock) were forced open. This is what the diamon center’s vault looked like after the robbery.

Kryptos

Located at the CIA HQ in Virginia, Kryptos is a heavily encripted sculpture. It has four sections with messages, three of which have been decoded. The fourth section(installed 1990) remains as an unsolved code to this very day.

Once all four of the sections are decoded, they form a riddle which must then be solved for whatever the answer may be. Gathering from the solved sections, it seems they are part treasure map instructions, poems, and discussions.

Jellyfish Sprite

Red sprites or the tentacle-like spurts of red lightning in the sky during a storm are sometimes referred to as Jellyfish Sprite (because of their shape). There are also some that are vertical columns of red light and those are called carrot sprites.

They are ultra fast electricity traveling through the atmosphere towards space and are extremely rare (they last a tenth of a second). They can also be seen from space.

A perfect example? Out of 200+ House Democrats, only 14 (less than 10%) signed a letter demanding the release of Mahmoud Khalil—despite overwhelming calls from their constituents, despite the clear danger of this moment, despite knowing full well what their base is asking of them. That’s not necessarily because the other 190+ personally oppose it; but it’s def because the institutional weight of the party makes it incredibly difficult to break from leadership without facing political and financial consequences.

And yet, when people criticize this clear failure, when they rightfully demand that their representatives reflect the values they were elected on, they’re met with accusations of “helping Republicans.” That logic is not just fucking stupid—it’s actively harmful to democracy. Holding elected officials accountable is not party disloyalty - it’s literally what voters are supposed to do. It is the most basic function of political engagement. It's literally how the window gets moved!

The Democratic Party isn’t entitled to unwavering support. People criticize because they expect better, because they believe change is possible. Silence and complacency don’t strengthen the party—pressure does. Every major policy shift (labor laws, LGBTQ+ rights, civil rights etc)in this country happened because people refused to shut up and fall in line.

So no, calling out Democrats for failing their base is not "helping Republicans." What actually helps Republicans? Democrats validating GOP narratives by condemning student protesters. Democrats failing to take bold stances. Democrats making themselves indistinguishable from the people they claim to oppose.

Snapdragon Seed Pod

Also known as Antirrhinum majus, this wildflower starts to look like a skull during late summer after it’s petals fall out and reveal a green sea pod which slowly browns. It also has some interesting legends associated with it like that concealing one in your room or person will make you seem “fascinating” and even repel evil spirits.

Another legend is that any woman that consumes this wildflower will have eternal beauty which is just ridiculous since every part of the snapdragon is poisonous.
