Mike does not think El is a way to fit into society or conformity. From Finns answer to what he think made Mike want to help El even before the other kids, he says it's because he could very easily see how El was an outsider as well, victimised by society. He connected with El on their inability to blend in to society, NOT BECAUSE EL, THE ABUSED NEURODIVERGENT CODED girl makes him meet "expectations"
Imagine what it must have been like for El to hear Mike say "I love you on your good days, I love you on your bad days... I love you for exactly who you are."
Throughout her entire childhood, the only memory she had of anyone saying that to her was when her mother said it right before she got taken. We don't know if Hopper ever said it, and if Brenner said it then it would've been for purpose of manipulating her.
Then she goes to high school and is bullied for who she is and starts believing that she's a "monster" who will never fit in.
I love Mike's love confession because it wasn't just about her needing to hear those words from her boyfriend, it was also about her needing to hear it for the first time from anyone.
Seriously, she deserved that so much <3
