WANGXIAN FIC RECS

@wangxianficrecs / wangxianficrecs.tumblr.com

Fic Recs for MDZS and CQL | 95% Wangxian, 5% others | Run by Kay (he/him | @the-last-d-boy) and formerly Mojo (she/her | @mojoflower) | Authors: if you like the graphic for your story, just ask, and you may have it | If we make a rec you don't like, tell us, and we'll take it down | 'Fic Finder' and 'Mood For' asks should now go to @wangxianficfinder

How To...

WangxianFicRecs wouldn't work without your recs!

Some general things:

  • Be respectful of all kinds of followers with your language.
  • The fic itself can be as raunchy and problematic as you like: WangxianFicRecs respects all different tastes.
  • You may also rec any MDZS ship, you’re not limited to Wangxian. Crossover fics are also welcome!
  • It does not matter whether the story is old or new, completed or a WIP. I obviously cannot read all stories on AO3, so this your chance to rec a story!

How to:

  • Make a Follower Rec: Have you read an amazing fic that you want to share? Submit an ask! Make sure to include the title/author or AO3 works/number and a few words about what is great about the story.
  • Share a story for the Proud Author Spotlight: Have you written a story that you want to share with others? Submit an ask! Make sure to include the title/author or AO3 works/numbers and share why you think others might enjoy your story.
  • Boost a Fandom Event: Do you want more people to know about a Big Bang, Fic Exchange, Charity Auction, Art Exchange, Podfic Challenge etc. basically anything that’s about the community (rather than on an individual level)? Submit an ask! Make sure to share the details or point to an info post as well, so it can be linked!
  • Share a Cherished Collection: Is there an AO3 collection you want more people to know about? Submit an ask! To make sure we got the right collection, either link it or add the unique collection name (found in the URL or in brackets in the profile of the collection). Make sure to include why you want to shout-out the collection!

Want to leaf through our recs? Make sure to check out our Tag Page!

Or do you want to find a Specific Fic or a Non-Specific Fic? @wangxianficfinder is the right place for you! Their Fic Finder and In the Mood for a Fic posts are extremely helpful. You can read how to ask here. They also have Fic Compilations that you might want to check out.

Happy reading!

WangXian Plot Bunnies: Free to a Good Home by TriviasFolly

E, WIP, 63k, Wangxian

Summary: These Plot Bunnies have been languishing in my WIP folder, some for years, and I've got no intention to finish them! So I figured, why not put them up here for your enjoyment? For an extra spin on it, this is like those puppy petting events where you can adopt them after playing. Or like a test drive for a car, try out a plot line before you write it! For extra clarification, I've got no interest in finishing these. Birdies have just tweeted in my ear that maybe even some unfinished omegaverse would be welcome. Kay's comments: For plot bunnies, these three are very long and detailed and fun to read! They really had me hooked to the edge of my seat and I'll definitely advertise for reading them no matter if they will never get finished. Especially chapter two! Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji finding their omegaverse way to each other during a matchmaking event, that's where the excerpt is from too! Excerpt:“Why aren’t you at the event?” Lan Wangji questioned. Wei Wuxian let his gaze flicker up to Lan Wangji. He gave him a noncommittal shrug. “You’re the head disciple.” “My brother is trying to say you have too much of a high standing to be excluded,” Lan Xichen stepped in. “As Jiang Sects Head Disciple. Unless you’re already promised?” “I’m not,” Wei Wuxian tried not to let his dejection in his voice. “Not promised?” Lan Xichen prodded. “Not Head Disciple,” Wei Wuxian sighed. His ink brush landed with a bit more force than necessary. Irritation worming his way under his skin. “Meaning there is no reason for me to be at the matchmaking event. Which is why I’m out here, minding my own business as ordered.” “So you are promised,” Lan Xichen continued. Wei Wuxian sighed, glaring up at him. What was this? The two got bored with the event so they decided to go make fun of the exile in the forest? He was an omega, not entertainment. This wasn’t the Jin Sect. “Is it really that important?” Wei Wuxian tried to curb his temper. It didn’t help that the rumble in his stomach was coming back. With the two alphas here he didn’t really have the focus to fix it. “I just don’t see why someone with your talents wouldn’t be at the event,” Lan Xichen’s smile was becoming annoying. “Unless you are promised.” “Well I’m not.” He snapped, his anger flaring. “I might be unmated, but I am not here for your entertainment. That is what the omegas with futures and prospects back at Lotus Pier are for. If you’ll excuse me, I have work to do.” He huffed, loudly laying out a new piece of paper and picking his brush back up.

pov alternating, canon divergence, wip adoptions, work up for adoption, developing relationship, getting to know each other, ambiguous/open ending, omegaverse, alpha lan wangji, omega wei wuxian

Hello, I'd really like to recommend this fic. It is incomplete but absolutely wonderful in its canon-divergence, with wangxian getting together in xuanwu cave which leads to greater vulnerability down the line, but in some ways also greater angst before the happy ending. - Anon

M, WIP, 43k, Wangxian

Summary: Wei Ying’s attention has chased Lan Wangji since the first day they met—relentless, unforgiving, his eyes always looking. One day Lan Wangji can’t help but look back. Or: What if they just kissed already while they were in Xuanwu cave.

Summary: The Wen remnants—those survivors whom Wei Wuxian had pulled from certain death, defying the righteous sects in the process—were still a contentious topic. The fact that they had not attempted any retaliation, that they lived in this forsaken place away from the prying eyes of the world, did not erase the fear their name invoked. The sects had their grudges, deep-rooted and bitter. Or, Lan Qiren goes to Yiling to determine whether the information he’s been fed adds up to the reality of it.

Summary: “You're getting rid of me.” His voice didn't break but every word was like a shard of glass, leaving him surprised blood wasn't spilling out of his mouth along with them. “A-Xian...” Whatever Jiang-Shushu was going to say Madam Yu beat him to it. Her smile grew even more pleased. “Don't be stupid, boy. It's an honor to serve the sect in a marriage contract. Especially marrying into the Lan Sect.” Objectively she wasn't wrong about that. His eyes stung. It was different for him though. Four years ago he stayed in the Cloud Recesses for the guest lectures and was thrown out by Lan Qiren in the end. How would he survive living there? Or: Wei Wuxian marries into the Lan Sect expecting to be miserable but slowly learns to make it and the people of the Lan Sect his home. And maybe he'll even get to keep it for once.

Summary: Wei Ying places his hand on one of Lan Xichen's. It's tacky with grime, and it flinches away from his touch before leaning into it. "Wuxian," he says again, "Wuxian-I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." He lets Wei Ying go and bows his head to the floor, chanting apologies. Jiang Cheng takes the opportunity to yank Wei Ying back to him, and he shoves his brother behind himself and his sister. When they turn back to Lan Xichen, he's in a ball on the floor, his breathing slowing and his eyes drooping. Lan Qiren surges forward, as does Lan Wangji, but the man faints on the floor, his hand reaching out for Wei Wuxian. "Xichen!" Lan Qiren yells, and it shakes the other version from his stupor. The Sect Leader stares at his other part, in shambles on the floor, and then meets Wei Ying's eyes. They're thinking the same thing: what happened? Lan Xichen eyes the dirty hand prints left from his other self's tight hold and thinks, what did I do? -- In which a Lan Xichen from the future drops into Cloud Recess during the lectures, burdened by inexplicable remorse towards Wei Wuxian.

Summary: With a small change, Wei Wuxian has a chance to reconsider his stance. That change leads to others. The most important words you can say, after all, are thank you, and I am sorry. It is better to say them earlier, than later through tears. Yet another plot bunny yoinked from the plot bunny yard sale of batbusiness_schooldropout. Keep'm coming, I can do this all day. :D

when you're doing all the leaving (then it's never your love lost) by tardigradeschool

T, 26k, Wangxian

Summary: Wei Wuxian barely makes a sound when Jin Zixun’s sword goes through his chest. A tiny noise is punched out of him — half gasp, half sigh. Jin Zixun, wearing that smirk that Lan Wangji has always hated, moves to pull the sword out. This won’t do; Lan Wangji knows enough about battlefield medicine to understand the principle of keeping the weapon in the wound until a medic arrives. So he does the only thing that occurs to him in the moment, letting the momentum of flight be the force behind the swing; he cuts off Jin Zixun’s hand. - Lan Wangji goes with Wei Wuxian to his nephew's one-month celebration instead of Wen Ning. They still don't make it to the party. Mojo's comments: ✧˖°.⊹📖⊹.°˖✧ Kay's comments: Apparently, I have already read this story before?? I left kudos, but apparently, didn't bookmark it. A bummer, since I really loved this story. Glad to have re-discovered it thanks to Mojo! In this story, Lan Wangji accompanies Wei Wuxian to the one-month celebration and is there when Jin Zixun attacks him. It all goes uphill from there. I'm so weak for stories where Lan Wangji joins Wei Wuxian in the Burial Mounds and then it's a fix-it too - what more could I want? The story is set in The Untamed canon. Excerpt: "Hanguang-jun, do you mind sleeping here again?” “Not if Wei Ying minds,” Lan Zhan says steadily. “I don’t,” Wei Wuxian says. “Lan Zhan can even have the bed.” Lan Zhan and Wen Qing protest simultaneously: “There is no need--” “You were stabbed last week, is your memory that bad--?” “You should share,” Wen Ning says.

The Kid In My Garden by kathie_raddare

G, 7k, Wangxian

Summary: One day, Wei WuXian's husband went to work, and a child returned in his place. Kay's comments: A very cute story of Lan Wangji getting de-aged and stuck in the body of his five-year-old-self for a day. Luckily, he has Wei Wuxian there to care for him. This story is so incredibly sweet and Wei Wuxian takes such good of Lan Wangji. Pure sugar. Excerpt: Wei Ying, on the other hand, was quite used to enduring and teasing his way out of Lan Zhan’s stubborn moods. He remained silent and let the little boy sulk his way into answering. Sooner than later, a childlike, but solemn voice, sounded: “Apologies.” And, Heavens, it was so very cute!! Wei Ying had to fight for his life to not throw himself at Lan Zhan, embracing him in a tight hug!! He waited for the little boy to mull his words over and saw when he eyed Wei Ying’s robes and realized that Wei Ying was an elder. Probably, an important one that he, at his tender age, had yet to know. Still kneeling properly, his little back very straight, Lan Zhan puffed his chest out and, with an air of dignity, answered: “I am Lan WangJi, second son of QingHeng-Jun. I am five years old.” He showed his palm, only four fingers in the air.

Weep You No More, Sad Fountains by athena_crikey

T, 59k, Wangxian

Summary: “Yiling Patriarch,” he begins, and Wei Wuxian’s face clouds. “Please. That’s not – you know me, Zewu-jun. What’s wrong? Why are you here?” He walks over and Lan Xichen sees he has no weapon, not even his flute. He came to meet Wangji unarmed, defenseless. With a smile on his face. “I’m here to ask for your help. It’s Wangji. He’s ill.” Mojo's comments: This. was. FABULOUS. but i'm tired and don't have the spoons for a comprehensive bookmark. This excerpt came from near the end - and might have a few spoilers - but it very much describes the arc of the story and lx's journey. Everything is Lan Xichen's POV, and hooo boy is he learning that his preconceptions are wrong and now he'll have to think for himself and face uncomfortable truths. Also, A-Yuan is adorable. Excerpt: In anything else, for any other reason, he would have risked being betrayed rather than being the one to break faith. But not for Wangji. Wangji is the one thing he cannot, will not surrender. For Wangji’s sake he has turned the world upside down – freed the Yiling Patriarch, ignored the Gusu Lan precepts, opposed the Lanling Jin’s exile of the Wens, ruined an offshoot clan, brought about the destruction of the Stygian Tiger Amulet. In one month, he has changed the landscape of the cultivation world, solely for the sake of his brother. He cannot say that he regrets it, even if he does regret the doubt that has grown in his heart.

Summary: “Make me so ugly that no one will ever want me,” he says. “Please.” Or: Lan Wangji is kidnapped from the Lan Clan when he's still a small child. He retains no memories of his real identity, and only knows himself as a servant at Madam Ji's brothel. When the clients begin to look at him with interest, he finds someone to curse him and take away his true appearance, and with it any chance of ever finding his family. Dispersing Clouds by dreamingofcake

E, 283k, Wangxian

Summary: While the Wen Clan is embroiled in subduing internal conflicts within Qishan, the Jiang Clan hosts the annual discussion conference. It has been one year since the disastrous archery competition where Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji last met but Wei Wuxian remains as optimistic as ever. An unlikely friendship begins to blossom and without the looming spectres of conquest and war to strengthen his ties to the Jiang family, the trajectory of Wei Wuxian’s life changes. Kay's comments: What an epic story! Really interesting alternative take on the Sunshot Campaign as in, the Wen Clan is kind of falling apart into different factions and it becomes more of an internal war. At the same time, Wei Wuxian's personal story also diverges with him learning about the life debt Lan Qiren and Jiang Fengmian owe his parents and him deciding to become a rogue cultivator (though before long, he becomes quite close with the Lan Clan!). Absolutely not a Jiang-friendly story and definitely in the area of bashing, so look out for that if that's something you don't vibe with. For everyone else, give this story at shot! Almost 300k and it had me hooked until the very end. Unfortunately, despite the focus on the Wens, Wen Qing and Wen Ning are Siblings Not Appearing In This Story. Excerpt: “What? It’s the truth, isn’t it? Besides, it gives me bragging rights too, since I’m your friend!” He paused. Then with a touch of uncertainty, he asked, “We are friends, aren’t we?” That uncertainty increased as Lan Wangji hesitated in answering. After a long moment, Wei Wuxian gave a brittle laugh. “Ah, I see. I guess Jiang Cheng was right after all. You do hate me.” Moving away, he gave a little bow and said, “If you’ll follow me, I’ll take you back to your guesthouse.” He had only gone two steps when a hand clamped down on his arm.

pov wei wuxian, canon divergence, genius wei wuxian, inventor wei wuxian, jiang family bashing, slow burn, friends to lovers, wei wuxian leaves the yunmeng jiang sect, rogue cultivator wei wuxian, good uncle lan qiren, supportive lan xichen, accidental baby acquisition, cultivation sect politics, period-typical homophobia, feelings realization, wei wuxian is not oblivious, canon-typical violence, hurt/comfort
