As someone who was raised on the rev war reenacting circuit, I can tell you that reenacting is heavy on the propaganda. My family got involved because my mom figured it was a living history thing and with two autistic kids obsessed with history, it might be a fun summer activity to keep us busy and educated during the summers. While there was a lot of interesting education and people who were in it out of a genuine love for historical clothing and skill learning, it is a hobby that is 90% wealthy white men who are incredibly conservative. There are also military recruiters who cruise the events.
I am aware of at least 5 gun control bills that didn't get passed because they would have interfered with reenactments because they would have reclassified historical weapons and required permits and courses to own and use them like other types of guns, and reenactors didn't want to have to get permits or get rid of their private collections of historical replica weapons. This was mostly because reenactments are LOUD- even without modern ammunition, musket fire makes a lot of noise, and many of these events were commentated so people watching the battles could understand what was going on. I was 8 the last time I went to a reenactment, and I got tinnitus shortly after starting. In addition to the noise, black powder and paper cartridges puts a LOT of smoke into the air. People get drunk and disorderly at the campsites after hours.
These guys used to brag that they had 'the liberals in their pockets' because if anyone came to them about the guns they could say they were Preserving History, and guilt people into backing down about it. Most of the time it worked. We were hauled out to pose for photos at military cemeteries. As an archaeologist, that pisses me off so much. Living history events are a good way of learning, but they are propaganda. Anything the USA can do to fuel patriotic fervor and make people feel connected to what 'being American' feels like, they will do.
The photos below are from some of the events that I went to as one of my last reenactments. I don't remember a lot, but I remember that the most popular event was lining up all the kids and teaching them how to 'shoot' with wooden guns, and telling them how we were "already serving our nation". I love history, but it's infuriating to see that once again our country is calling China out for propaganda when the United States is one of the biggest propaganda machines on earth.
^ and yeah, that's me. even back then i wasn't too excited about the whole situation.
