WAIT
I JUST REMEMBERED HEARING AN ELON MUSK QUOTE WHERE HE TALKS ABOUT HOW HE BELIEVES CHESS IS "TOO SIMPLE" OR WHATEVER AND HE SAID HIS FAVORITE GAME WAS A GAME CALLED "POLYTOPIA"
I JUST REMEMBERED THAT IVE PLAYED POLYTOPIA
It being Elon's favorite game (or at least one so important to him that his biographer dedicates a lot of time to it) is.....really really funny.
Basically, imagine Civilization, but as a mobile game. So like if Civilization Revolution was even more dumbed down (that's a Civilization insult. That's devastating. It's devastated right now). For what it's worth, it's not a bad game. On the contrary, from what I could tell in the little bit of time I played it, it's a perfectly competent game with good design. But it's not a deep game by any means. I played through it once, won easily on my first go, then saw that the other playable characters had barely any differences between them.
Like, not to imply you can judge a book by its cover, but here's what it looks like
I came across an article by Dave Karpf discussing this exact thing, and I think it describes it wonderfully
Sir Terry Pratchett awakens. A skeleton stands at his bedside, wearing a long black robe. He sits up. “Well, hang on, let me get my hat,” he tells it.
The skeleton reaches into its robe. From abyssal depths it produces a heavy book bound in sheets of lead and night. It is the kind of book that gets stolen by a rugged adventurer from a temple with more spike-traps than the average house of worship contains. It is the kind of book to which the word “tome” might properly be applied. Frost forms on its pages from the lingering chill of the void.
The skeleton coughs once and holds the book out to the man sitting on the bed.
WOULD YOU SIGN THIS? it asks. BIG FAN.
Oh this must be reblogged, 10 years later
u survive literally every single event in your life & still every time a new event happens you feel like this is the event that will kill you and that you will never move on from but actually you will continue to survive like you always have bc u have a 100% win rate of surviving events. btw
Dehumanizing bigots is bad, not because I want to be nice to them, but because they are human beings and they serve as a reminder that anyone is capable of evil ideation and action. Violent bigots are not fundamentally different beings from you. They are human beings, who have developed a reactionary and destructive belief system due to their circumstances combined with their biases. In a different timeline, that could've been you. Anyone can be radicalized. Nobody is immune to propaganda, not even the person reading this.
There is a difference between 'thinking critically about the kind of things that lead to a person becoming a nasty piece of shit' and 'you're not allowed to say bad things about people who are pieces of shit.'
The OP is NOT saying 'don't call bad people assholes uwu.'
The OP IS saying 'don't portray every evil person as a stupid, subhuman, knuckledragger who is incapable of having a braincell between their ears' because doing that undermines the intent behind their actions.
If we treat bigots as some anomalous species, we are ignoring the machinations in society that churn out hateful bigots.
Tons of mileage to be had out of this image so thought I'd share it
This flashback in ATLA, Azulon becoming enraged with Ozai for disrespecting Iroh and the recently deceased Lu Ten, is usually interpreted as Azulon then ordering Ozai to kill Zuko. I disagree with this for two reasons. 1: We don’t actually hear Azulon say that, it’s only referred to by Azula (who was around seven or eight at the time and might have misunderstood what she heard) and by Ozai, years later, when he is taunting Zuko on the Day of Black Sun. Neither Azula nor Ozai are reliable narrators. 2: Azulon is, at the time of this flashback, the ruler of the Fire Nation who has just lost one of his only two grandsons and heirs. What kind of monarch loses one heir and then turns around and demands the death of another, especially when losing Zuko would hardly bother Ozai? My interpretation of this situation is Azulon ordered Ozai to give Zuko into Iroh’s care, replacing Lu Ten as Iroh’s heir, neatly removing any argument Ozai had about Iroh’s line having ended. Ozai of course would never accept this. He either lied to Ursa, claiming Azulon wished Zuko dead, or outright told his wife he’d kill Zuko before seeing him get ahead of him in the line of succession, thus manipulating Ursa to help him assassinate Azulon. I think this theory makes far more logical sense than ‘Azulon ordered the murder of his nine-year-old grandson’.
Oh, I like this. I like this lots.
Interesting. Quick question tho.
The fact that people in Nicaragua are currently performing backbreaking farming labor for so little pay that being offered a job that pays the equivalent of less than $3.50 USD an hour would constitute an opportunity for upward mobility is...
A. a completely naturally occurring and politically neutral state of affairs, just the way the world happens to be for no reason in particular.
B. a condition that exists as the direct result of decades of interventionism and lobbying by American fruit corporations to deliberately repress wages and labor laws throughout central american countries to keep production costs low for the plantations they own in these countries.
Like yeah the opportunity of being paid $3.50 an hour for doing remote labor for a first-world employer represents a legit improvement for a lot of people in Nicaragua over the work they're currently doing.
But the only way you can classify it as not exploitative is if you ignore that the conditions that make such a dogshit deal look like a legit improvement did not come from nowhere, you dipshit.
“maybe men wouldn’t fall down the alt right pipeline so easily if feminists were nicer” yesss women famously got our rights by saying “pretty please? 🥺 with a cherry on top? 🥺🥺🥺” and the men were really nice and said “omg yes of course 🫰🏻”
Sometimes, I really, really HATE knowing and understanding history.
cheers to my housemates for drawing the gems for me for this comic
