magpie brain. and occasional actual content.

the world is running out of glassblowers and yet you want to become a fucking doctor

One of the most jarring moments of my university education was in a physics class when I was given a device that measures gravity and was told “this cost the university sixteen thousand dollars, but the only glass blower in the world who could make the glass springs inside it died so it’s literally irreplaceable. If you drop it those springs will shatter. Go fuck around with it for a day and take some measurements”

In the UK there's a thing called the endangered crafts list which I highly recommend if you fancy discovering some crafts you never even knew existed. Scientific and optical instrument making is considered 'critically endangered' and glassworking (scientific glassware) is just considered endangered, which is for 'crafts with a shrinking market share, an ageing demographic or crafts with a declining number of practitioners.' There's some other crafts in that category which are easier to teach yourself or go to classes on that list, like lithography, marbling or block printing on fabric, so it might be worth considering those if you're looking for something to try.

Trump is all like "Australians sell their beef to us, but they won't buy any of ours 😡"

Which.... yeah? Of course???? Why would we import external beef from so far away when we produce more than enough to meet our own needs??

Not to mention that USA still has both mad cow disease and foot and mouth disease, but Australia doesn't -- AND America has increasingly lax commercial-level health and safety standards, meaning the risk of pathogens like MCD/F&M spreading through the US are significantly increased, and we don't have either here in Australia, so of course we don't want to import beef from a country that could conceivably spread the diseases to us???

But even aside from that. There are not that many Australians. But there are a lot of Americans. AND Australians eat an average of 23.4 kilos of beef per year but we produce 2.2 million tonnes. We produce WAY more beef than our population eats. So of course we don't import much????? And of COURSE it's not from America, which is both significantly further away than our current importers (primarily New Zealand and Japan), AND which has significantly lower health and safety regulations than we do????

Meanwhile, Americans average aprox 37 kilos of beef per person per year, but produces around 12.4 million tonnes. USAs population is 12 times larger than ours but only produces 5 times more beef than we do, AND consumes more per capita than we do. Of course USA imports large quantities of beef. Because their domestic production doesn't meet their domestic demand. Meanwhile Australia's production vastly outweighs our domestic demand, so of course we don't import American beef?????

Thats...... that's how imports and exports are supposed to work???? You export excess of what you have to someone who has less of it, and in turn, they export to you the produce/products that YOU don't have. This is fucking basic??????????

"Waahhh, Australia won't import American beef 😭😡" yeah???? Of course we don't????????

PLUS!!!!! Overall, Australia imports 34 billion dollars worth of stuff from America per year. Meanwhile America only imports $16 billion from us.

Putting tariffs on a country that imports more from you than they export to you is uhhhhhhhhh, FUCKIN' STUPID. If america tariff everything we send to them it's on all of $16b worth of stuff. If we tariff everything of theirs then we'll be slapping taxes on more than double what they can tax us.

Trump is such a fucking moron.

Does this man not understand that the point of trade is to swap what you have an excess of for what you don't have enough of

Why would we export masses and masses of beef only to import large amounts of inferior quality beef from the same people we just sold beef to

Does he think the USA is exporting large quantities of oil to Saudi Arabia?

Enough of the trope where memory loss undoes the damage or the corruption or whatever. More content where removing memories just removes the context.

The tragedy of needing to grieve and not knowing what or who you lost or why. The angst of having trauma and being denied the awareness that it's trauma. The suspense of being different somehow and left to wonder how and when. The tension of knowing that something is off and you can't find where it hurts. The Adventure Zone gets it. Kingdom Hearts gets it.

There is an aching inside you and you don't know how it got there.

Sometimes you just have to start 13 shitty wips in order to get to a story you really wanna write.

I… have never considered a mindset where I don’t feel guilty for coming up with a new WIP once a month and then giving up on it within the first 3 chapters.

An idea is just that an idea, it’s not an obligation. You don’t have to force yourself to write something you don’t believe would be worth reading. Ideas are cheap. They’re a dime a dozen.  You can start a million of them if that’s what it takes to find the one you want to work on.

Some women are conditioned to be fragile and weak, and to believe that it's a sin to outperform a man. Her feminism would involve allowing women to be strong.

Some women are expected to be strong at times when they can't. Her feminism would involve reassuring her that it's okay to not be strong.

Some neurodivergent people are raised to believe that they're too stupid to ever amount to anything. Their disability activism would involve reassuring them that they're capable.

Some neurodivergent people are raised to believe that they're smart and gifted, and are expected to live up to impossible standards. Their disability activism would involve allowing them to fail, make mistakes, be stupid, etc.

Some children are constantly reminded "you're the child, I'm the adult" in order to deny their autonomy. Their youth rights activism would involve treating them like an adult at times when they feel ready for it.

Some children are treated like adults in order to justify increased expectations or to downplay abuse against them. Their youth rights activism would involve allowing them to be a child.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to oppression. Each individual person's experience is different. Whatever trauma is caused by their oppression, the activism should focus on undoing it.

@cesperanza, additional thoughts?

LOL. Okay, give me a minute, I'll work up nine circles of fannish hell for ya. :D

Outside of hell--mundanes, circling and circling!

Inscribed on the gate:   “This work could have adult content. If you continue, you have agreed that you are willing to see such content.”

1 -  Limbo – happy monofans who are still in ST: TOS or Starsky and Hutch (we salute you!)

2 –  Lust – In a fandom where everyone’s lusting after the wrong blorbo or pairing omg

3 – Gluttony - lying awake reading fanfiction at 5 am I am so going to regret this.

4 – Greed: Hoarders  and Squanderers:  “When are you going to finish this WIP!”  “Where’s the sequel! Write faster!”  Also: people who are writing chapter 230/400, people with 1000 open tabs

5 – Anger:  Shitposters, failfandomanon, don’t read the comments!

6 – Heresy:  “Avengers: Age of Ultron was my favorite,” “I prefer Zachary Quinto’s Spock,”  “Bring back Jar Jar”

7 – Violence against self, others, God, etc.: Giving explicit fanworks to actors, selling fanfiction on Amazon, doxxing, etc.

8 – Fraud – Sockpuppets, bots, the lurkers do not support you in email!!

9 -  Betrayers (George Lucas, JJ Abrams, Joss Whedon, etc.) Also: “You have already left kudos here :)

A cyanometer is a device used to measure the intensity of blue in the sky, often used in meteorology and atmospheric studies. It typically consists of a series of blue color patches or a color gradient, allowing the user to compare the sky’s color to these reference colors.

Do you like the wheel of the sky

Well I like that it doesn't take 5 minutes to scroll past.

finally rewatching Fringe after many years. Some thoughts...

  • 487 episodes and we have finally finished season 1
  • have to get up and change the disk. again.
  • Olivia!!!!!
  • John Noble is so young here. I mean relatively. Is Fields (Severance) Walternate if he crossed over and just chilled a tiny bit? Would innie!Fields be more like Walter?
  • what is up with all these recap scenes? did people really forget that much of the plot week-to-week?
  • Astrid! you really didn't have much to do this season, did you?
  • the writers really were just throwing stuff at the wall to see what stuck, huh?
  • Olivia!!! *hear emoji*
  • I do adore her relationship with here sister, but where the heck does everyone sleep in that apartment?
  • I do kind of adore the location titles, not to much the sense flares though. Just because you can do that doesn't mean you should. Not all the time. Put that back in your toolbox JJ.
  • Olivia being so low-key angry all the time. I don't think I appreciated that properly the first time around.
  • Charlie Francis, Partner, Friend, skipper of leg day. You will be missed.
  • They really just break into people's houses all the time, huh? This show is three different genres inside a cop procedural show at the beginning.
  • Jared Harris was really underused. Really wish they would have developed that plot line a little more.
