Want to know the best Dirk Bogarde movies? How about the worst Dirk Bogarde movies? Curious about Dirk Bogarde box office grosses or which Dirk Bogarde movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Dirk Bogarde movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well, you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
Dirk Bogarde (1921-1999) was an English actor and author. Bogarde was voted as a Top 5 British movie star for seven years in a row (1953 to 1959). His role in Doctor in the House (1954) made him a superstar in England. Bogarde wrote seven best-selling volumes of memoirs, six novels, and a volume of collected journalism. His IMDb page shows over 71 acting credits from 1930 to 1990. This page will rank Dirk Bogarde movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, videos, games, and movies that were not released in North American theaters were not included in the rankings. To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences, and get some award recognition. This is a request (ok multiple requests) from UMR Hall of Famer Bob.

I think I qualify as a fanatic. I’ve seen 51 of Dirk’s films, including 28 of the 31 you have listed. There are also a few that I’ve started watching, but shelved to finish later. Sir Dirk achieved the seemingly impossible in A Tale of Two Cities … he made me like Dickens for the first time (and the last). I watch Campbell’s Kingdom every time I need a hug. I don’t know why that film appeals to me so much, but suspect it has something to do with Michael Craig. Hunted almost qualifies as the perfect film, with writing, cinematography and performances very hard to criticise. It’s hard to believe that it’s 60 years since Victim was released … its message is still relevant. I would love to show it to the surprisingly high number of teenagers who use words like ‘gay’ and ‘queer’ as insults (I taught for 35 years). Was James Robertson Justice his most frequent co-star? They bounce off each other so well.
Thanks for the list. It made me do some thinking (a Good Thing).
I absolutely love that I’ve stumbled upon this page! As an avid fan I have seen 21 of Sir Dirk’s movies thus far and have (and have read) all of his books.
Wonderful actor and an amazing life story!
I saw 2 including top 1. a bridge too far a 9 . the night porter I saw on the big screen. it was probably the first legal r rated movie I bought a ticket for after turning 18. a brilliantly performed horrific tale of sex in the holocaust. in previous efforts to watch r rated movies I used a fake id.
Cogerson, brilliant solution to including no B.O. available movies. well done.
Hey bob cox….I have only seen 4 myself. Bob is the Bogarde expert here. I have actually seen both of the ones you have seen. I love A Bridge Too Far…and I liked The Night Porter….which is a strange movie…but very memorable. Funny that you used your fake id to get into movies..I used one to get beer in my wilder days. Glad you like the movies with reviews only…you will be seeing more pages like this in the future. Good stuff.
I also just noticed this page on Dirk Bogarde, another Sir, after commenting on the Sir Richard Attenborough, who ironically directed Bogarde in his highest grossing film, A Bridge Too Far. I have seen 11 of his films, including 4 that are not on this list. It helps that YouTube has many of these old British movies available for free. Notably, I saw Victim a few months ago, where Bogarde gives an excellent performance as a gay attorney. A very daring film for 1961, particularly in its “relatively” sympathetic treatment of homosexuality. Bogarde was maybe at his best playing rather unsympathetic or sly characters. His role as The Servant where he gradually starts to dominate his master played by James Fox is particularly memorable. Dirk Bogarde was certainly one of biggest British stars of the classic era and was quite well known internationally, even though he never became a big name on the US.
Hey PhilHoF17….I wrote this page…but I was not happy with it….so I pretty much hid it in plain sight. Your 11 Bogarde movies seen easily beats my 4….but is way behind Bob and his total. I will have to check out those Bogarde You Tube videos. I know one of the comments here, posted a link to one of his early British movies. It sounds like Victim was well ahead of its time. The Servant is not one of the Bogarde movies that I have seen….but it sounds interesting. Good stuff as always.
It appears that like Bob, I did not know you had done a page on Dirk Bogarde until I saw his comment.
Including both the films that had box office and the ones where there were none, I have seen 13 Dirk Bogarde movies. His films are not as readily available to me as in the UK.
The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is A Bridge Too Far.
The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Song Without End.
The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is The Doctor’s Dilemma

FLORA:
First thing every day I check Bruce’s new pages summary and if he has listed a completely fresh page I give responding to it a priority all other personal things being equal. I still don’t see a Bogarde page listed among his April/May new pages.
I note that for once my “have seen” tally beats yours. I’m honoured but will try not to let it happen again!!!
Nevertheless a total of 13 movies is good for a citizen of Canada who presumably would not have the same access to the Brit film output of long ago as we over here have done down the years..
Please keep safe.
Pretty sure it has been on the index page since mid-April. In the old days…a new page would have easily stuck out….now it is easy to hide a page in plain sight.
Hey Flora…..as I just told Bob in another comment, I was working on this one a few weeks ago and accidentaly hit publish versus save. At that point I had to either delete the whole page and start over or quietly put the page out there….but quietly continue to work on the page. It has gotten a few comments, but none of the UMR Hall of Famers uncovered it until today.
Tally count: Bob 29, Flora 13 and 4 for me. So even our combined total is well behind Bob’s total. Of the 4 I have seen, two made your favorites list…A Bridge Too Far and Darling. Interesting that both you and Bob have not seen Song Without End….seems that would be a “must see” movie. Good stuff as always.
