Heavy snowfall on Wednesday has caused travel delays in the Helsinki airport, where 21 Finnair flights were cancelled in the afternoon. The airport is functioning as normal but flights to and from Helsinki have been restricted due to poor weather.
Currently, two of the airport's three runways are in use. ”It’s not looking like the weather will clear up, so it is likely that this situation will continue to affect us during the busiest time of the day,” Päivyt Tallqvist from Finnair said.
Passengers are requested to monitor information from their airlines for possible delays and cancellations.
Trains and trams delayed too
According to the Finnish Transport Agency, trains are running late as snow has accumulated on railroad switches, for example in Kerava and Ilmala. Similarly, trams are behind schedule but the switches are currently being cleared of snow.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute warns that driving conditions will be very poor across the country tonight as snow continues to fall while temperatures rise.
