Finland getting a taste of summer over Easter

It is still unclear when cold air from the north will disrupt Finland's warm spell.

Warm weather is coming to Finland over Easter, with Good Friday set for temperatures of up to 23 degrees in the south of the country.

There is some uncertainty about the forecast, however.

"Tomorrow, on Wednesday, could be the warmest day," said Anssi Vähämäki from the Finnish Meteorological Institute. "In south west Finland it could be 20 degrees. Of course northern Finland is cooler, and the whole country won't see temperatures like that."

While sunny conditions are on the cards for Good Friday, the forecast suggests things could start to cool down again over the weekend.

"At this moment it looks like Saturday will be cooler in Central Finland, while southern Finland will still be quite warm," said Vähämäki. "Cool air is set to spread to southern Finland on Sunday. It is still a long time till Easter, however, and the forecasts are still being tweaked.

Vähämäki says the "hot potato" in the forecast is which day the colder air from the north starts moving south. The current forecast suggests it will arrive in the south on Sunday.

"It could be like that, but it could be that the timing is different," said Vähämäki. "I would say that if we record temperatures over 20 degrees in mid-April, the numbers are quite high for the time of year. I'd recommend being satisfied with that."

The weekend won't quite bring record temperatures, as the record for April is 25.5 degrees Celsius, recorded in Jyväskylä in 1921.

There is very little rain in the five day forecast, except for the north where it could fall as snow. In parts of the north the snow cover remains more than a metre deep. In southern and central areas there could be some rain on Thursday, but only a few millimetres.
