Easter travellers warned to return home before Monday snowstorm

Finland's traffic and weather authorities are encouraging Easter travellers to return home on Sunday, as up to 20 cm of snow and high winds are expected in the lower parts of the country on Monday.

The Finnish Transport Agency has advised southern and central area Easter travellers with flexible schedules to head for home already on Sunday in order to avoid a Monday snowstorm. The deluge is expected to bring up to 20 centimetres of snow and high winds to almost all of Finland south of Oulu, making visibility and road conditions very poor.

"If people are driving back to southern Finland, the road conditions will only get worse as the day progresses," says Yle meteorologist Tomi Hellinen. "The falling snow will inhibit visibility and drifting snow and slush will build up on the motorways."

He says the front of blustery snow will reach the southern coast of Finland early in the morning already Monday, reaching the cities of Pori and Kajanni by the afternoon.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued a warning for dangerous or potentially dangerous traffic conditions on Monday in all areas except Lapland and the region of Satakunta.

The front of snow will move north and dissipate by Tuesday, and the forecast for Tuesday sees a return to clear skies and plus-zero temperatures in the south, slightly cooler in central areas.
