HKScan recalls mislabelled chicken product

Packages of chicken labelled as kebab meat actually include cheese, which may cause an allergic reaction to some.

Poultry producer Kariniemi, which is part of the HKScan foods group, has announced a recall of packages of shish kebab chicken. The company said on Friday that 320-gram packets of Kananpojan Kebabvarras with a best-by date of 26 May 2018 were improperly packed. Instead of the items listed on the label, they actually contain the company’s “Greek-style” grilled chicken product Kananpojan Kreikkalaisia, which contain cheese.

The labelling says erroneously that the product does not contain milk. Therefore, due to the risk of allergic reactions, HKScan is pulling the items off store shelves.

The firm says that there is nothing wrong with the contents of the packages, and that they will not pose any risk for those without dairy allergies.

The wrongly-labelled packages can be returned to the point of purchase for refund.

Kariniemi was established in Eura, south-west Finland, in 1966, but through a series of buyouts ended up as a brand owned by HKScan, one of the country’s biggest food manufacturers.
