Finland's president has said that his son does not sleep in the cardboard box in which the country's famed maternity package arrived, but rather in a cot.

The 69-year-old's son Aaro Veli Väinämö was born on 2 February this year, and the president was asked at a lunch event for political journalists how he was adjusting to family life.

He said things were going well, with a stable rhythm to their home life. This week Niinistö, his wife Jenni Haukio and Aaro will move to their summer residence Kultaranta in Naantali, on the south-west coast.

Niinistö also reminded journalists that the resignation of a government does not necessarily mean new elections, as a new administration could be formed if it commands a parliamentary majority.

Niinistö was the first Finnish president in history to welcome a baby while in office. The four-month-old is Niinistö's third child and Haukio's first.
